The Cure have recruited their old guitarist to re-join the band’s line-up, according to NME.com. Earlier this year it was announced that two members of the band have left, bringing a decade old line-up to an end (read story at UG).
Guitarist Perry Bamonte and keyboard player Roger O'Donnell are no longer with the group, leaving singer Robert Smith, bassist Simon Gallup and drummer Jason Cooper.
Now, the group have revealed that Porl Thompson, who has played with the band on two occasions before, will be back for their summer tour. A statement on the band’s official website reads: "We are delighted to announce the return of guitarist Porl Thompson for the cure shows this summer! This will be Porl's third time in the band - he first played from 1976 to 1978, and then again from 1983 to 1993 and it's a real pleasure to have him back once more!"
The band’s first gig with their new line up will be at this year’s Benicassim Festival in Spain (08/05).

Anyway, itll be interesting to see how he performs since hes been with the band before. Cant wait for the bootlegs. Besides, guitarists are a dime a dozen nowadays anyway. They would have found someone.POSTED: 06/22/2005 - 05:49 am / quote |

: I'm excited for Porl, under him, I thought the best guitar hooks were written under the Cure, and at least they still have Simon, but I think they should also rehire Boris.POSTED: 06/22/2005 - 11:38 am / quote |

: LOL I laugh at the lack of knowledge some of you guys about the cure. There was a guy who said he only had just like heaven and the lovesong. WOW you gotta be a radio kid if youve only heard those songs cus they were real popular back then. If youre not familiar with the cure I highly recommend you start of with the albums "WISH" and "Disintegration". Cant go wrong there. If you want the dark side of Robert and Co. check out the cd Pornography. Porl Im glad hes back that guy comes up with some catchy stuff.THE CURE LIVES ON !!!POSTED: 06/22/2005 - 06:45 pm / quote |

: Clearly, Lullaby is their best song. I like it when he doesnt actually sing properly. Somtimes his voice can be too fragile.POSTED: 06/23/2005 - 06:16 am / quote |

: ok, for the newbies i would say pick up the first singles collection, "staring at the sea" (not 'galore'!!!). it has all the eraly classic cure songs through Head On the Door on there. depending on which songs on there you gravitate to the most i would go out and pick up an early album. i.e. if you like 'a forest' then that would be Seventeen Seconds (a classic)...or if you like 'hanging garden' then that means youre probably going to want to hear Pornography. As far as the middle years, Disintegration, Kiss me Kiss Me Kiss Me, and Wish are the strongest albums, in that order. The later years are much spottier and I would avoid picking up those albums until after youve heard the older stuff first.
As far as Porl's contributions, he reallly shines on Kiss me Kiss Me, and Wish.
For the adventurous, i would recommend The Top if you like experimental, druggy, almost psychedelic and very eclectic Cure. its Robert Smith at his most insane and maybe most brilliant.POSTED: 06/25/2005 - 10:26 am / quote |

: I'm not much of a cure fan or anything but they're music is pretty good. Porl Thompson is supposedly a really good guitarist though, as he played with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Jimmy even said that Porl had to reteach him how to play some old Zeppelin songs. Pretty mad eh?POSTED: 06/30/2005 - 12:49 am / quote |
