The Killers: Emo Bands Are Dangerous

The Killers’ Brandon Flowers has launched yet another scathing attack on emo bands like Fallout Boy.

The singer is worried about the impact the genre is having on a whole generation of youths and labelled it “dangerous.”

He ranted to the NME: “Culturally, if it gets as big as it is in America, it could change an entire generation of people growing up here. Emo, pop-punk, whatever you want to call it, is dangerous.

“We don't wanna dislike anyone, and we've still never met Fall Out Boy, but there's a creature inside me that wants to beat all those bands to death.

“They just all go into the happy emo funnel and everyone loves 'em without thinking. 'Oh, Fall Out Boy likes you? Fuck! I'm gonna go buy your CDs.'"

i honestly don't understand why everyone loves hating on music so much. How is emo different from any other genre of music in the last 15 years. First it was grunge stuff like nirvana and soundgarden, and then everything sounded like that, then there was alternative stuff like Everclear and Better than Ezra, and everyone sounded like that etc etc None of that stuff was more technically talented than the current fads, and actually probably less technical. Emo is just a genre and it's not going to go away completely, just like grunge and metal and everything else hasn't gone away completely, but it will fade in popularity eventually. I just don't understand why there is this constant uproar of fury against emo. I'm not really a fan of emo in particular, but it just seems stupid for a bunch of music geeks to sit around and hate on music.

I think this is an argument over a mute point. Mr. Flowers raises a large point. Personally, I don't feel as though pop culture (music, movies, etc.) has much to do with what I do, but that is completely different for others. I know several people who prefer heavy metal music who say that artists like Mr. Manson have changed their outlook on life. Some people buy more into mass media than others. As a high school senior, I know that these bands are quite popular (ie: Fall Out Boy and their bed fellows, Panic At the Disco) and the music they produce isn't very uplifting, to say the least...

Beyond that, I believe this is just a phase. Every moment of every day, the American music scene is changing. The band that hit it big yesterday may not be around tomorrow and the group that had the hit record last year may not do so well when their next album comes out. Americans in general can't make up their minds WHAT they want to listen to... loyalty is a big problem for the more main-stream listener. (Yes, I am American, by the way...) In no time at all, we'll be out of this "feel sorry for yourself and slit your wrists to ease the pain" and get into a "lets all get high as a kite and fly to Bangkok" type of music. It's happened over and over... don't think it won't happen again.

When disco came out a lot of people hated it and thought it was stupid. And it was. A lot of people liked it even though it WAS lame.

And they are original. Kudos to them for calling out the simplistic bilgewater that the music industry is cranking out like cheap sneakers.

And Mr. Brightside is much more lyrically ironic than Fall Out Boy could contrive in their parents' basements.

Something is just wrong with people like Brandon Flowers, emo is dangerous yet bullcrappy synth pop like his is. There all contagious whether they like to admit it or not. ANYTHING that is slightly catchy is contagious and therefore most music genres nowdays are like that.

Bands cannot go round saying things like that when people are falling victim to music they are creating. Most emo bands are not plumbing the depths of musical ambition but neither are the killers. There is no orginality is most music nowdays, are for the most part I have given up listening to any band that has started after 1996, for exactly that reason.

Quite a lot of people like stuff which is different, even though different may be catchy. Stuff like that is just part of people making music.

There's a humongous point that everyone here is missing. The current generation has a vastly significantly higher rate of problems with self-mutilation (cutting, burning etc) and suicide: proven statistical fact. The flaw in brandon flowers anti-emo argument, and everyone else's that have posted here, is that depressing music, whatever genre it comes from, is not the cause of the problem, but rather the reaction to it. Emo music isn't making kids cut themselves, kids that are cutting themselves or whatnot and listen to emo music, aren't doing it because of the music, but rather the cutting and the music are both reactions to other sociological and emotional problems inherent in our generation.

Now here's the really crazy part that stupid people will flame me for, and will blow thinking people's minds. The music obviously isn't the cause of the problem, so what is? In reality, the real cause of the increase in mental and emotional illness in the current generation is due to the vast experimentation with drugs in our parents culture, the same generation who produced bands like Zeppelin and Floyd. Our rents f'ed around with the wrong stuff and their generation flourished musically because of it. The sad truth is our generation is now facing a karmic pay-off, and the effects are directly visible through the evolution of the music scene from then to now.

Depending on what you're calling emo, it's really not going to go away, or it already has. If emo to you is just depression-fueled music, that's not going anywhere anytime soon, and might never go away (See my previous post about drug-induction of current day music). As long as kids are still messing with substance, music for the most part will stay in its depressive state. Emo didn't start depression-fueled music, grunge did (again previous post, early 90s musicians were the first generation spawned after the drug revolution). Not condoning being straight-edge, cuz people need to have fun, but too many people going crazy with paper and x is really what is going to cause this to continue.

I love Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. I like emo and classic rock and pretty much all other rock styles. Plus I listen to Classical music and other genres. Does anyone have a variety of musical taste anymore? Also, a lot of emo bands DO have meaningful lyrics. I am not out to bash any styles of music, because that would be stupid. I repeat, NOT EMO. Emo is Saetia, Rites Of Spring, Circle Takes The Square, On The Might Of Princes, etc. Emo is emotional hardcore.

Fall Out Boy is pop-punk, and mediocre pop punk at best.

Emo bands don't focus on showing people anything more that simply playing into their already confused attitudes and personalities saying that it's cool to be abnormal and also influencing people to do really stupid things to themself and to other people. Some bands have "emo" songs, but those are a mere expression of their experience. But "emo" bands who only focus on that crap seriously should realize that they are hurting an entire generation.

Dude drugs aren't the cause of depression fueled music, it's other things in your life that cause you to resort to drugs as an escape, that escape is also put into music, the same reason people get into music is why they get into drugs. I myself don't care for this new "emo" music thing but was once guilty of listening to shitty music like it. But than I grew up and didn't like it anymore and listened to good music like Zeppelin so I say just let the kids listen to their crap and eventually they will grow out of it...

I don't really think it is emo percé that is dangerous, it is the whole mass-consumption, self-centred culture this generation is growing up in. It's not just emo that has a problem with "instant fans" as I like to call them. Hip-hop and rap, as well as pop, punk, hard rock, and really all mainstream genres are plagued with the "hottest new things" that everyone instantly loves, regardless of talent.

I think The Killers are a sub-genre of emo... like "techno-emo". Either way, this Flowers guy has no space to talk. He wears just as much make-up in his videos as the emos do, and he sings about breakups and girlfriends and shit too. Classic case of pointing out someone else's faults in hopes that your own won't be exposed. "I want people to like my band the most, so I'll label the Emos morally bankrupt." It's the same thing that music journalists did to Black Sabbath in the early 70's. They didn't like Sabbath, so they were going to do their very best to see that it was never discovered. So all the while this guy keeps finger-pointing at the emo movement, he's probably hoping to incite some type of vicarious mass emo persecution so nobody notices the radio-friendly garbage that his band is churning out. If you love or hate emo, do it on your own terms and for your own reasons, not because somebody said so.

And what's this guy's angle, anyway? His cookie-cutter band (which couldn't turn your head with a pipe wrench)has done nothing but capitalize on a trend with a couple of run-of-the-mill pop songs, and all of a sudden he becomes an authority on which musical archetypes are dangerous or malicious to society? honestly, i cant stand this emo, screamo b.s., but if thats what ppl wanna listen to, then so be it. its just that, if u have to dress like a chick to make u feel better, then there is something wrong with ya. its kinda like the new age shitty version of glam rock. wearing womens clothing and theyre makeup. now dont get me wrong, there was some kick ass glam rock bands(motley crue), but they all did the same thing, made a ballad, talked about the same thing. Emo is just the new age version of glam, only it sucks. IMO, all this hardcore emo/screamo crap will fade away in a few years like glam, disco, and grunge did. Tho there is still some glam bands and grunge bands still out there that survived and are kicking ass. But the whole emo scene will fade away with time, and good riddance. This is just my opinion but i think it is not emo that has stemmed this generation of self-pitying kids, but rather the kids that have sprouted a generation of "emo" bands. I think that these bands allow these kids a way to express their feelings. Personally i think being emo is a result of being insecure and not being able to deal with it. There will always be violence associated with a generalization of people no matter what society you live in, its not necessarily a direct result of the music itself but can be partially responsible for an abandonment in good judgment. I'm not attempting to create a simpathetic standpoint towards these emo kids becuase my bias wants them all to die, but i think many of you are being niave by hating on the music and not the people themselves.

I don't really know how I feel about this, I wouldn't say that emo is crap outright because I do listen to some of it, but lyrically surely it must have some influence on my generation? I just have to look at how many of my friends cut themselves and how many of them DO listen mainly to emo. Maybe it's just me. .but I was always told that emo was an offshoot of hardcore that really emerged in the early 90s. I was under the impression that bands like Rights of Spring, Mineral, and Sunny Day Real Estate were what is really considered emo, while bands like Fallout Boy and My Chemical Romance were just pop or pop punk.

I think you should listen to what you want. My opinion is all these corporate happy bands like fall out boy and killers are a bunch of industry dressed children. I think that the band like NOFX and Rancid who get popular because there actually talented and speak about more important things in the world (not saying they don't talk about girls). I don't hate Emo music or Pop/Punk or just in general Rock music because thats what it is. I just agree with the fact that it does send bad points to kids but then so does all rock music and rap and pop. It all has differnt ways to be interperated, it all just depends on how you hear it. Well i'm going to just say what i'm about to say isn't defending emo music, I do like it however i'm just expressing how I feel about this, not from someone who listens to emo music, but to music in general.

I'm actually quite tired of seeing people abd bands complain about emo music (or that could go for any music really), and what good does it do? Makes people fight, opinions are throw out like crap (like mine will here) and it just causes problem.

Until the day there is no fans left of this music style, until the day a new modern band comes out and pushes a new style into our generation (like you know emo is so talked about, so a diff. style of music), and until the day people don't write this type of music, there will always be emo music. Maybe not so popular in a few years, but right now, it is. Live with it.

Personaly I don't get how the Killers have the right to say that a whole genre of music is dangerous, regaurdless of how bad the music is. The Killers are not a horrible band but they're for sure not pioneers of any sort that are in a possition to try and change the whole music scene.


Secondly, just because "emo" music is out there on radio and such...is there anyone who's forcing you to listen to it and further more why not invest more of your time into contributing to styles of music that you like as opposed to insulting genres you don't like?


As for horrible "emo" singing and lyrics, there always has been and always will be that band in every genre that you think TOTALY sucks, there is some pretty bad music out there and its not just going to disapear so stop complaining so much and make the best of it.


Finally the charicteristics/"signs" of an emo band are high voices...Led Zepplin? Queen? Secondly the wearing of all black...KISS? I mean I could go on and on about how the same charicteristics that one hates in "emo" are in exihbited in many very very talented and inovative musicians/bands.

Here's why: Cannibal Corpse isn't mainstream and are therefore no competition to The Killers. Fall Out Boy are competing for record sales and fans w/ them.

In my humble opinion, they both suck. Neither are very talented but both bands make music people enjoy and they've sold a lot more albums than I ever will. So props and kudos to both bands

I'm not an emo, but i listen to it. I like Slayer, Billy talent, tallica, KsE, SOAD,Deftones, bfmv, radiohead what ever. But I think 90% of emo bands are so much better at composing music that shitty indie bands like in the NME, they get hyped up over nothing. Of course what we are all forgetting is music is about taste and personal tipple as I label it. I see the emo bands of the moment like Fall Out Boy as the new pop-punk. With heros of that generation finished or dissolving out, many people look for the new pop to rock bridge and this appears to be it. The frustating thing is, on this occaision it's just more grating and infectious, because of imagery and that fact this isnt the first generation doing this kind of thing. Pete Wentz mentions in interviews about depression, yet can get away with putting suspect pictures of himself on the net. Just dosnt stack up, he's either the life and soul of the party or the non-existence. A recent article in Kerrang! featured Fall Out Boy and had the headline "Fall Out Boy: How To Write A Pop Record". Music dosnt get more manufactured than that. Panic! At Ths Disco are much lesser an evil because they incorperate different sounds and try things to be inventive. As i said at the top, music is about taste though and give it 6 months we could be bantering about anything else. I'd like to thank the accademy.

I mean, that's the same crap that was said about grunge, and sometimes still is. And complaining about stoners who listen to music? When I met others who listened to the music and weren't showboating, I was able to accept it as quality music.

i think that the whole emo "scene" exsisted before what everyone calls emo right now. i have a somewhat wide variety of music and i listen to absolutely everything i can get my hands on. i belive "emo" existed with artists like tupac listen to his music it was all about death suicide and love same with eminem and 50 cent even necro. look at metal all the bands that pioneered thrash metallica megadeth anthrax and slayer have all sung about love death and suicide before. even the really really heavy bands have song about thoose subjects bands like Death and cannible corpse have had lyrics singing about love and death and hate and suicide all theese bands talk about theese subjects similar to the way that the bands in the "emo" genre do.

Perhaps the reason a significantly larger number in the emo crowd to partake in self-harming (I have no statistics proving fale or true), is because self-harming people gravitiate towards that kind of music, rather than the music being a cause.

Fall Out Boy, and all bands like FOB, are not emo. They're straight up pop-rock. Emo was a secluded underground spin-off of hardcore punk in the mid-80's. The music was basically just hardcore punk with more introverted lyrics and a bit more melodic. Not peppy music that screams, "CUT MI WISTS ND BLACK MI EYEZ". I wonder how many people who first got into the rock scene, then went on to discover how influential other genres, including classical, had been. Just because you dont like something, doesnt mean its wrong. We're all in the same game here, and we're all playing to make music. People are too caught up in the labelling to really appreciate anything new.
Up until now, I've often insulted emo's, their music, and hated anything thats sounded even remotely indie. But they're all labels, and its stupid. I've been stupid. You guys have opened my eyes. I havent liked a new modern day band for quite a while, and now I see why. I've been too narrow minded in my perceptions of what makes good music. People should like music for what it is, good melodic songs. With good lyrics. They shouldn't label music or anything of the sort. If you like a song, you listen to it, end of story.

And come on, Brandon isn't all that normal and perfect example when it comes to lyrics, he has some pretty weird lines, as much as I like the songs. I don't know what he was thinking saying FOB is dangerous.

Complete rubbish. I listen to MCR, and somehow I have stayed from slitting my wrists or going into depressed states. I know plenty of people who listen to emo who would disagree, and prove it by showing you their unmarked wrists. The problem with this argument is simple: You all are labelling everything, and thus you are Steriotyping everyone and everything related to those labels. Stop it.

Don't get close-minded. I'm not a fan of much stuff that's came out of the genre (or their fanbase taste in fashion...) but whining about it is trite and boring. Its all personal taste.

In fact, is it just me, or do most questionably cack bands coming out of the woodwork say how they don't like emo?

PS. If every emo cut their wrists, they wouldn't have much of a fanbase left.

Its funny that 95% of the people are complaining about the music yet almost everyone agrees with them, its pathetic. All the close-minded people are a danger to modern society, if you can't respect another human for something as simple as taste in music, I just don't see how this will work out.

I do find Emo annoying. I guess it is okay for people who don't really have a clue about music (yes I guess they are sheep) to like that untalented Emo crap. I don't mean that maliciously. And I suppose that that type of fashion and dress sense is nothing new (I guess that makes Emo unorigional, which it is.) However, the constant whining, cutting for attention, and feeling depressed is pathetic. Yuo think your life is shit, go to some really poor part of the world, and you still don't see half starved children listenin to boring music and cutting themselves. Ok, when i was sayin that emo bands only use 3 cords i meant that is how they use them. I know that some good songs have been written with 3 chords, but emo bands just seem to strum them for ages. AC/DC for e.g could write a song with 3 chords, but they would put a lead guitar over that with some fills to make it sound better.

I can't help laughing at those who commented that this Brandon's remark was prompted by jealousy -- 'coz Fall Out Boy cds sold more than his band's. The likes of Hoobastank, Ashlee Simpson and Creed have had cds which hit multi-platinum status so I wouldn't really consider a distinct group to be in. It helps, sure, but Brandon has attested a no. of times that what's more important to him is to have the vote of the likes of U2, Morissey, Oasis, David Bowie, Coldplay and Elton John, which the band has gotten, on different levels, of course. Damn those artists for their inept musical tastes, heh? And somebody take back every Grammy trophy and all the concert profits U2 has received as Bono is clearly an unreliable musician for referring to The Killers as "the swankiest rock and roll band on the planet now" and asking them to open for them in some of their tours. There clearly has been a mistake.

This Flowers guy has no idea what he's talking about. Whatsoever. And what makes me sad is that so many people on here think like him. 'Emo' is NOT Fall Out Boy, and besides, what he's talking about is not exclusive to pop-rock abnds. Okay. First off, I have to say I love the Killers and absolutely adore Brandon Flowers.
Now then. I totally disagree with him. Pop-Punk and Emo are not dangerous. I mean, if you look at his music, it's pretty damn "dangerous", if he means what I think he means.
