The Killers On Mitt Romney: 'It's Fine If He Likes Us'
The Killers have responded to news that controversial US politician Mitt Romney is a fan of the band. Republican Presidential candidate Romney praised The Killers in an interview with Parade earlier this week (August 26). When asked which acts he would ask to perform at the White House if he became President, he mentioned The Beach Boys and several country artists, before adding: "[Of] today's rock stars, The Killers are one group I enjoy." Several US bands have objected strongly to being associated with Romney. Alt rockers Silversun Pickups issued a cease-and-desist order after he featured their track "Panic Switch" in his campaign, while metal band Twisted Sister denounced his running mate Paul Ryan for playing one of their songs at a rally. However, The Killers have taken a more tolerant approach towards the controversial politician. Bassist Mark Stoermer told Rolling Stone: "Anyone's allowed to like us. If it's just about music, I guess it's not a negative thing." Stoermer then added: "He's, I guess, a guy and he listens to music and happens to like us. That's fine." When asked whether The Killers would agree to perform for Romney at the White House, Stoermer replied: "We'd have to cross that bridge when we come to it. We're not really a political band. And we don't necessarily have all the same views, but none of us are very politically active anyway. I guess we would be open to it, depending on if and when it happens and what it was about." The Killers are currently preparing to release their fourth album "Battle Born", which is due September 17 in the UK and a day later in the US. To launch the LP, the band will join forces with cult director Werner Herzog for a live webcast of their September 18 show from New York's Paradise Theatre. Thanks to NME for the report.
