Canadian rock band Theory Of A Deadman might be having a huge year thanks to the success of their 2008 release Scars & Souvenirs and their hit single "Not Meant To Be," but according to guitarist Dave Brenner, that doesn’t mean that the band is in a hurry to get back to the studio in the near future.

I think we can keep touring for another year maybe,"
Brenner told Alternative Addiction in a recent interview. "
We were thinking about doing a tour that’s not so much rock and maybe a bit more top 40 focused, I think we have a lot of songs that fit that category."
Brenner says that the band likes to separate touring and writing as two separate entities, otherwise he says, the quality of the music will suffer.
"We’ve never been a band that writes on road, I am a firm believer that the music industry requires focus," explained Brenner. "Focus in touring and working the record that’s out, and then there’s focus in writing. I find that when you mesh them together, you’re spreading yourself too thin, your writing sacrifices."
Brenner thinks that writing a new record while on the road is a mistake that many bands make, especially after they’ve had a successful record and are trying to keep their band in the spotlight.
"I’ve seen a lot of bands who say they wrote their record on the road, and you hear the album and think ‘Well maybe they should have waited until they were home and not playing shows and flying and traveling.’ You really have to be in the right head space."
Brenner said that may not be the case for all bands, but Theory Of A Deadman feels strongly that there needs to be a transition period from one record to the next.
"We’ve focused on touring and supporting Scars & Souvenirs. When this tour is done we’ll decompress and start on another record," said Brenner. "But you need that downtime, otherwise it feels like a job, and it shouldn’t feel like a job. What we do is a lot of hard work, but it’s not a job, it’s a passion."
