Tool Guitarist Contemplating Collaboration With Robert Fripp

artist: tool date: 02/08/2010 category: general music news
rating: 10 / votes: 1

Tool guitarist Adam Jones met with King Crimson founder and guitar player Robert Fripp last month in London to discuss reactivating a collaborative album the pair began working on several years ago.

Fripp revealed the news about the meeting in a post at his online diary, writing, "A fabbo lunch with Adam covering a wide range of common interests & experiencing, among which: the possibilities of continuing our album, begun in Los Angeles some 5-6 years ago; and go out speaking together."

The possibility of Jones and Fripp working together leads to the question of what — if anything — is going on with Tool itself. Frontman Maynard James Keenan is busy with his own side project, Puscifer, and also has a documentary about his vineyards coming out later this month. There has been little word on a follow-up to Tool's last effort, 2006's "10,000 Days".

Keenan admitted in a recent interview that he gets restless at Tool's slower pace of doing things. "I can't sit still, so when those guys hesitate, it takes us so long to do stuff, and it's like a snake eating its own tail situation, 'cause then I get distracted and I go off and do a thing, and then I get blamed for not being around to do the (Tool) thing," he said. "But nothing was getting done when I was standing there, so I got bored and left. It's just an endless cycle."

Puscifer will begin its first full-length East Coast tour on March 2 in Atlanta, with dates booked through early April.

Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

Swell, I know I would listen to fripp's and adam's project, although kinda sad to see that tool doesn't seem to be, or will be in anytime soon working on new songs.

there was some news way back that said Tool was writing material, but still! I'm excited to hear this - I know that King Crimson is a gigantic influence on Tool, so I'm sure I'll be checking this out when it's due for release.

So, this looks like we're not gonna see another Tool album until next year, 2011.

This would indeed be one of the best things ever, but I worry about the future of TOOL at this point. At least one more album guys, please!

The world could use some of this, but the world DEFINETLY NEEDS TOOL. Badly!

Ah well, I'll just go watch my awesome TOOL live DVD just to ease the pain a little!

Oh wait...

the fripp and jones cd would be awesome. i'm not worried about the furute of tool at all. they'll take a long time again to release a cd but as always it will be worth the wait.

Nice, it would be so cool to see them finish what they started. But I don't worry about Tool, because I have read that a new album will be coming out. Tool has this thing where they put a new album out every 5 years. Example ; Lateralus 2001 and then 10,000 Days 2006. So i hope to see the new Tool album in 2011.

This would fit the 5-year cycle:
Ænima - 1996
Lateralus - 2001
10,000 Days - 2006
- 2011

Metalology wrote on 02/08/2010 - 12:01 pm / quote |
Guys, there's hardly a five year cycle. It's happened twice (Aenima -> Lateralus & Lateralus -> 10000 Days), that's not a cycle. Maybe after three or four times it could be considered a pattern but for now it's not.

The world must have Tool in this time of great need! But...we can wait another year...just as long as it's good.

That would certainly be an amazing collaboration! Can't wait to hear anything released by Tool or King Crimson.

Yep. 5 years between albums seems to be the time.

I love how everyone talking about the "five year cycle" thing keeps saying that Tool only has THREE albums. I'm pretty sure Undertow needs to be mentioned.

Deacon Blues wrote on 02/08/2010 - 02:41 pm / quote |
when 10,000 days came out i swallowed the reality that it would be another 5 years before another album. its just how they roll

Marcus8192 wrote on 02/08/2010 - 02:45 pm / quote |
5 years cycle. If your a Tool fan you know that every song that Tool puts on their album is awesome. Each song has its significance and each song reaches it perfection! So im actually glad that Tool takes 5 years to meet my needs and everybody else's needs by creating a awesome album that takes 5 years. There is no doubt that their next album will be awesome!

Phantasmasaurus wrote on 02/08/2010 - 02:53 pm / quote |
i'm not really going to get my hopes up over the next tool album if it's going to be a five year wait just for something of the same quality as 10,000 days. the best thing that could possibly happen is if this goes through and a perfect circle gets back together.

SchecterC-1+Man wrote on 02/08/2010 - 03:16 pm / quote |
Holy shit :O I may actually be more excited about this than new Tool. But new Tool would be awesome too...

I would love a new Tool album. But Adam Jones and Robert Fripp? Hell yeah I want that.

Checked.

There will be a new tool album, Maynard may bitch and moan but its going to happen, just might have to wait for another year or two.

yeah i don't think maynard will ever quit one of his bands. Especially not tool. he even said that he'd work on some more a perfect circle too which i'm looking forward to. but there is always a huge gap in between Tool albums, this shouldn't surprise anyone. and i like anything Adam jones does so this is cool with me.

I now have an erection.

And for those worrying about Tool's time off... it's only been four years since 10,000 Days. Every LP(with the exception of the first two) has been released five years after the last. I wish they could crank out an album every two years too, but it's not like this hasn't been pretty much par for the course throughout their entire career.

they weren't pretending undertow doesn't exist, they were just indicating that tool has gotten into the habit of releasing albums 5 years apart, which this article seems to confirm. i don't know about you, but i'd say that whoever these guys were or whatever they did 20 years ago is pretty irrelevant.

honestly, at this point i wouldn't even be suprised if tool didn't release another album. seriously, maynard just doesn't ****ing care anymore,it's pretty obvious. and it seems like he's the only one too sadly. oh well, i really would rather have tool not release another album if it's going to be anything like 10,000 days. this however^^ does not sound like a bad idea..

Tool releases an album less often than a blue moon, but when they do, it's good. I don't mind waiting... Hell, I'll pull a Maynard and keep busy until then and forget it until it happens, haha.

Maynard is being a dick... if things take time with such awesome musicians is because it is being donne right... if you rush it, crap music will be produced.

The regular Toolband.com says the same thing, so I'm not too worried about new Tool stuff. And Maynard has never been one to give the most serious answers in any interview, so we should probably not take 'him being bored with Tool' too seriously.

And Jones + Fripp does indeed sound like an amazing collaboration.

this is very true - what you said about Maynard not being serious with anything...

Tool is the greatest band of the new millenium. I'd be a different person without them, so whether they release a new album anytime soon [or at all], I will be always be grateful for what theyve done to help shape my life.

Yeah I think that that new album with Jones and Fripp. And I think at some point Adam Jones and Justin should actually cooperate with Maynard. Plus I love all Maynard's work and I don't get how people always trash talk his Puscifer band. It's just as amazing as TOOL.

Stop going on about the damn 5 year thing.

do you really think tool sit around thinking, "ok, 5 years are up, lets go do an album."?

I'm pretty sure they will do another album when they feel like it.
