Trent Reznor: Bonnaroo Was NIN's 'Last Show Ever' In US

Trent Reznor: Bonnaroo Was NIN's 'Last Show Ever' In US

Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor said from the stage during his group's Saturday (6/13) performance at Tennessee's annual Bonnaroo festival that the show would be NIN's last on US soil, according to published reports.

"It just dawned on me that this is our last show ever in the United States," the Associated Press quoted Reznor as saying. "Don't be sad. I'll keep going. But I think I'm going to lose my ... mind if I keep doing this, and I have to stop."

Reznor's remarks shouldn't come as too much of a shock; the musician announced in December that the group's just-completed North American outing, dubbed the "Wave Goodbye" tour, would be its last for the "foreseeable future."

In February, Reznor posted at NIN's website a message in which he wrote, "I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while." He went on to describe the group's just-completed co-headlining run with Jane's Addiction as "a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye."

Thanks for the report to Livedaily.com.

I hope Reznor carries on creating music in one form or another.

guys, this article is sooooo misleading. NIN isn't calling it quits! The current band line up will not be the same but Trent will and forever be NIN. He's going away for a little while, but I am certain he'll be back in 6-7 years (assuming he's physically, mentally, and emotionally fit for it). Look at Ministry, yes they are gone for good now! But before they did there last run of records (ones since House of the Mole), that they didn't have a record before that for some time... anyways, my point is, to all you NIN fans, Trent will be back, and he will perform again, I can feel it, just not for the next few years!

AEnima18 wrote on 06/17/2009 - 09:12 am / quote |
Well, whether they call it quits or not, I'm still glad I'm seeing them in London with Jane's Addiction before they "disappear for a while" (or forever).

It was NIN's time, i love NIN but it's just not the same anymore as in the Downward Spiral days and Thr Fragile days. If Trent is making more upbeat music it doesnt belong in the NIN discography.

thats the stupidest thing i have ever read. trent is an artist, if he wanted to make a ****ing bubblegum pop album that was happy, it would still probably be genius. just because his music dosent sound like he's going to commit suicide all the time now dosent mean its not as good. it's good he's different now, because it would have gotten boring having him release the same thing over and over

this. I'm also really bummed out because none of my friends are willing to pay $100 to go out and see him on the toronto date, and I can't go alone
I also think this may be trent's last tour as he said he's beginning to find it very monotonous and draining. Also he's said before that he finds bands like the rolling stones pathetic, still going even though they're past their prime. He's getting older now, and I think he's probably going to end up producing mainly and possibly releasing another nin cd or two just over the internet.

sounding just like the record sucks.

if i wanted it to sound like just like the record i would stay at home put the cd on and stare at picture of them.

As much as I love NIN, I never wanted to see them live, because I could tell Trent and co were concentrating too much on the fans, instead of what they wanted to do.

I'm glad he's decided to call it a day. A day has to end at some point. There is no point drinking all day - it just becomes routine - Music should always be alive.

sukeyscorer wrote on 06/17/2009 - 11:19 am / quote |
he'll be back - at least doing a piano tour or something like that.
and he'll carry on with the nin projects like the Year Zero TV show and so on.
making music is a massive part of his life, even though he's getting married, there's no way he'll stop completely.

He never said that he will call it a day! He just wants to stop touring and instead focus on writing new albums...NIN is not gone without any touring...
I kind of like his idea to be honest - and I think one day, he/they will be back on stage

you missed his point. he didn't say that it would be bad, or that trent shouldn't make upbeat music. all he was trying to say was maybe he should release it under a different name or something. and i kind of agree. nine inch nails just isn't upbeat like that. but trent can and should do whatever he wants.

Trent will be back when he feels the time is right, or when he feels like he is obligated to come back and "save" the music industry. My friend and I were chatting the other day, and we both really couldn't believe how shitty music as honestly gotten. ALL Festival's suck these days, the opening acts for concerts are horrible (for the most part), and ticket prices have gradually increased as show quality has decreased.

Trent is the only person who realizes this and he does his best to distance himself from it--and does a pretty successful job of it, in my opinion. And I honestly see him coming back (in some form) when the NIN faithful least expect it.

The best thing to do now is support his decision to get married and be "normal," whereas we have thrived off his dark mindset that he's channeled into his music and placed his iron-stamp on Industrial Rock forever.

Just relax, he respects his fans as much as we respect him.

I heard moe. was closer to a 6 and a half hour set. I was actually at this NIN show, and it blew me away. I've seen endless amounts of concerts, and this makes the top 5. He played for 2 hours and 15 minutes. He didnt even do 'Closer' or 'Down In It' but it was still oh so very epic.

Honestly, i dont think there is much to worry about. Trent used to take years and years before new albums came out. Pretty hate machine came out 5 years before the downward spiral, which came out 5 before the fragile, with came out 6 before with teeth. Year zero then took only 2 years, and now NIN has been very active. I wouldn't be surprised if he came back in 5 or 6 years announcing a new album. He said they were only dissapearing for a while anyways, so that means its not forever. And there will probably be more shows in the US in the future, the quotes were most likely in the context of the tour or for the next few years

Reznor should really shut up and just make music. Really the amount of douche points that man racks up as soon as he opens his mouth.

The Stones are one of the greatest live acts on earth (although NiN are pretty awsome live too). Idiot.

I reckon he wants to work on a new music buisness model and do more production.

Didn't one of Reznor's idols, David Bowie do exactly the same thing when Ziggy Stardust had reached what he saw a natural and logical conclusion over 35 years ago? Then he returned with Diamond Dogs.
Reznor has been unhappy with the state of the music industry for sometime and has found love, happiness and maybe even solace at last. Perhaps he genuinely believes that, right at this moment there is no future in being NIN any longer. Or maybe he feels that it is time to take a break (as mentioned previously).
Either way, I'm sure that Trent will return in the future in some musical capacity, whether he puts together another band like Tapeworm or RevCo somewhere down the line, or takes things in a completely different tangent (a lб Bowie?)

My personal opinion is that through disillusionment and a somewhat jaded view of the duplicity within the music industry, combined with the fact that (major) record labels still seem to be somewhat clueless in terms of how to deal with the developing technology around them, Trent is going to sit back and see what happens over the course of the next couple of years. He will have the opportunity to "settle down" wwith his new wife and take the time in order to plan and implement a new direction that will be conducive to the way in which he wants to operate within new and, as yet, undiscovered parameters.

It's possible they played for six hours. I just know that I was so exhausted by the time they took the stage, I had to get back to my tent.

I caught Wilco. Good indeed. Although, my personal favorite performance was Ani Difranco. Phish + Springsteen was an historic event, too.

He'll play (and probably record) in the Antarctic. Even if he wasn't going to, he'll probably read this and do it.
