U2 To Retire?

At a recent press conference, U2 guitarist The Edge told journalists that U2 may stop touring after the current Vertigo world tour winds down.

Mr. Edge doesn’t believe the band can top the current tour, which he thinks to be their best yet. While previous U2 tours Popmart and Zoo TV have been two of the biggest and most extravagant tours in history, the last two (Elevation and the current Vertigo tours) are much smaller, though with state of the art special effects, according to Undercover.

"I'm ok to say bye-bye because I don't think we could top it," The Edge said. "Bono has taken it to another level. I don't agree with everything, but I love that it's like a new paradigm, a different equation altogether."

Last month Bono revealed that he thought he was going to be thrown out of the band over his campaigning against global poverty. He explained that his campaigning activities had "raised eyebrows" amongst fellow band mates The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. "There was one point when I thought 'I'm going to be thrown out of the band for this stuff'," Bono said.

In other news, Tickets for U2's concert at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu went on sale Saturday and sold out within an hour. Aloha Stadium spokesman Patrick Leonard said it was the fastest-selling concert in stadium history -- The Michael Jackson concert in 1997 sold out in four hours.

U2 will perform in Honolulu on April 8 as part of its Vertigo Tour. It's the band's first Hawaii performance in two decades.

Back in the 80's I think the edge really contributed something to music and guitar playing style, with his delayed guitar producing "epic walls of sound".

Sure its been done by other bands like coldplay now and the sound is charactoristically "mainstream" to us, but songs like "where the streets have no name" were realy quite different to anything else on the radio at that time.

You should at least appreciate what U2 have contributed to music as a whole. More so in their early days. Even if you dont rate their music, or all the "indie" bands they've no doubt inspired.

yes they are allowed to express their political views as is everyone else, however the main problem i have with Bono (not U2 which i hugely repsect in a musical aspect) is the fact that somewhere along the road of his fight against poverty in africa (respectable) he got sidetracked and decided to starting giving political advice to countries when he clearly had no idea what he was talking about. as a canadian i was disturbed when he said that if canada didn't increase it's foreign aid our Prime Minister suffer in the election and proceeded to give advice on how our country should increase it's foreign aid. this in itself shows how little Bono knows about canadian affiars and how un-qualified he is to give political advice. Bono just shut up and sing and leave the running of a country to those who are actually qualitifed in that aspect, i don't tell you how to sing/write good songs (well up until the Vertigo album) so you don't tell me how to run my country.

Hate to break it to the 14-year old Zeppelin/ACDC fan Ultimate Guitar fan base but the band likely isn't breaking up. Edge was referring to saying 'bye bye' to North America on this tour as the band heads out to Australia and New Zealand.

They'll be back in the studio soon enough. Hope Edge pulls something different out of the hat for this next one though, something Achtung Baby sounding Even when people say Edge is overrated, he's still underrated as a musician and composer.

The Edge and Adam Clayton are one of the most copied guitarist and bassist in music. Their influence is huge and I can appreciate that, as well have a little respect U2 without thinking their the greatest band (I haven't gotten into them yet).

I actually just don't like Bono or his music. I mean, he's got an ego the size of his house, and his music... just isn't my thing. I don't hate them though... They've never done anything for me. I still think he's done a great job with all of his donations, and I'll always respect him for that.

The amount of money the entire music industry generates would'nt even come close to scratching the surface. U2 has broken more records for fastest ticket sell outs and attendance numbers than ANY band in history. #2.U2 set the bar for what a concert should be when they took thier zoo tv tour on the road back in the early ninties. Today a major artists show isn't complete if they are'nt surrounded by vidiwalls and non stop effects. The popmart screen was the largest vidiwall ever errected and may still be to this day. U2 have had thier up's and down's if you look at them on an album basis. Most die hard u2 fans would even admit that pop wasnt thier best album but it was still far more suuccessful than any album guns n roses or metallica ever made in terms of worldwide sales. U2 has consistently produced excellent music with thier blood and sweat in it. Even early beatles lyrics were'nt as avdanced as early u2 lyrics. Bands like korn or coldplay or whatever spend a few months in the studio and pound out the music until thier happy with it. U2 suffers for thier music they have albums that took over a year to record because the standards they set for themselves are so high. Back when Achtung baby came out some critics called it the next Sgt Pepper album. This album spawned 5 top tens and a number one. Very few bands with the exception of elvis and the beatles can say that about a single album. U2 much like the beatles crosses lines of age and race. I have never been to a u2 show where i didnt see people from 15 to 50 from white to black and everywhere in between. Do you think your parents would listen to corn,metallica,or 50 cent? I dont hate any band or for that matter any music some i just like more than others. To spew so much hate towards u2 like so many here indicates to me an underlying problem that has nothing to do with u2 and a total lack of apprectiation for the colorful world that is todays and yesterdays music.
