U2's Bono Presses For French Aid

artist: u2 date: 01/10/2008 category: general music news

Rock star Bono pressed French leader Nicolas Sarkozy to increase aid to developing nations, the aid advocacy group DATA said.

The organization, co-founded by Bono, front man of the U2 rock group, has urged France to raise development assistance to 0.7 percent of gross national income by 2012 as agreed earlier. In 2006, French aid stood at 0.31 percent of gross national income, DATA said.

"The president admitted it would be very, very hard, but France would keep her word," the statement quoted Bono as saying Tuesday following the meeting.

DATA's statement cites an October parliamentary report showing France's estimated overseas development assistance would be 0.35 percent of gross national income in 2007 and would remain at 0.35 percent in 2008.

Like I said in the other Bono article...

Yeh its an ego trip to have Bono's signature on it, claiming the glory. BUT it is probably helping those less fortunate than himself so in that respect good for him! Im all for charity and helping people who need it, but I feel sometimes Bono just needs to calm down a bit and do charity work without letting the world know that its BONO BONO BONO.

He needs to back off a bit. He has no business in pressurising France to double the amount of charity assistance they give around the world.

why are people so apposed to Bono trying to
do good? So if your favorite rockstar tried to help people would you be opposed to that too you cock sucking bastard

Because he uses the publicity for promoting himself. Im not against people doing good for charity, but he has a masssive ego. And you sir need to calm the f*ck down.

His business is saving lives of the poor he fights for. France promised to increase aid, along with the rest of the G8 back during the summit years ago. He's trying to keep them accountable. Who else will?

and please, don't let a cartoon like South Park to affect your opinion about issues like 3rd world poverty, an issue that would have never came to anyone's attention if not for the efforts of individuals such as Bono.

Leave it to the 7 other countries to make them pay up. I just hope Bono won't irritate them. Believe me when I tell you that I'm glad that he is fighting for the poor, I just hope he doesnt go too far and piss people off.

And btw dont let the bright colours and child-like characters of a cartoon fool you, sometimes they have a hidden message that is dead on. I mean, that specific episode was a bit crazy with some of the "crap" on it, but it was hinting at what many are thinking about Bono.
