Ultimate-Guitar Partners With 5min.com For More Lessons On UG.TV

Ultimate-Guitar recently made a partnership with 5min.com who will now be posting daily guitar and bass lessons on UG’s video site, Ultimate-Guitar.tv. Over 300 guitar and 50 bass lessons have already been added and much more to come!

All videos posted by 5min.com will be played through their incredibly innovative Smart Player which includes features that seem long overdo for guitar players. Viewers have the ability to slow down videos to a snail’s speed so they can practice at their own pace. They can also zoom in on any part of the video for up-close shots of chord positions and fingerings.

Other features include frame-by-frame playback, adjustable brightness, and even scene selection and storyboards. Smart Player makes viewing How-To videos easier and more interactive than ever before.

5min.com are what it’s creators call a “Life Videopedia”. They believe that any solution can be visually explained in no more than 5 minutes. Users from all over the world can contribute video guides in areas such as arts, business, fashion, sports, health, tech, food, and more.

Speed adjustment is awesome, but the zoom in feature means these videos are high resolution, how will UG allow for lower-bandwidth users?

Just had a quick look through them. I thought a fair few of the videos were ok. But I can't say I'm that impressed with all of it tbh.

There's a video which title says something like learn to play Star Spangled Banner Jimi Hendrix style, that is performed on a Guitar Hero knock off. A), this is a Guitar site, not a gaming site. B) How the hell does it even teach you to play Star Spangled Banner :S.

I also noticed a video from a Paul Gilbert instructional DVD, the poster couldn't even seem to name him.

It's only a couple of examples, and the majority seems to be ok, but come on guys. Are we really going to be pedalling this sort of stuff from now on?

too many beginner lessons.

i'd say about 80 percent of the lessons that aren't beginner lessons are all about blues work. There's lessons about specific things, like the Phrygian mode and the like, but all they amount to are a little showing of the scale, and a short demonstration of what you can do with it. I'd take one of Kristofer Dahl's lessons over every one of those videos combined. Hell, he hasn't posted in like a year, but i'd take one of Pick'nGrin's videos over all of those videos combined.

I'd hate to rain on the big deal the site just made, but i think we all appreciate a small amount of high quality videos rather than a load of videos we have to sift through to find anything useful.

I agree with Glen. I appreciate the effort here, no doubt, and from what I've seen there are some quality videos in there. But there are also videos of people just playing a lick without any explanation how, or what frets etc...

It's a good mix of videos, I think. There are many beginner lessons and some really challenging stuff (the Louis Johnson one, for example). But it seems to be mostly filler material. I'd still prefer the regular UG contributors like Kris Dahl (and even Pick n Grin, remember him?) to be the main features.

Maybe UG can extend the Smart Player features to our existing videos?

i feel the partnership is a good idea but there needs to be a higher standard for the videos now. ive feel like the quality of the videos is going down with the quantity
