The Time Has Come

Hey folks, so many of you have been asking yourself why Ultimate-Guitar.Com is still online, while most guitar tablature websites have been shut down by MPA during the past 6 months, including mxtabs, guitartabs.cc, guitartabs.com, taborama.com and mysongbook? The time has come for Ultimate-Guitar.Com to get an MPA letter as well. Surely, that was not something good, but the request to remove all tabs in 10 days.

I would not post anymore "why is it illegal?" messages, as there are enough articles on this topic, like this one from guitartabs.cc:

"At what point does describing how one plays a song on guitar become an issue of copyright infringment? This website [and tablatures], among other things, helps users teach eachother how they play guitar parts for many different songs. This is the way music teachers have behaved since the first music was ever created. The difference here is that the information is shared by way of a new technology: the Internet..."

The Story

Ultimate-Guitar.Com site, as you know, is a bit different from any other websites. We are based in Russia, thus none of US laws and authorities can force us to make anything. *surprise, surprise* However, we respect the rights of the musicians (not copyright holders, which is a big difference), thus we made some steps to ensure that they [musicians] are getting paid for the tablatures we have here.

Ultimate-Guitar.Com website is absolutely legal tablature archive which activity is based on a Russian Organization on Collective Management of Rights of Authors and Other Rightholders in Multimedia, Digital Networks & Visual Arts (ROMS)' license. ROMS is the national Russian organization providing professional collective management of authors’ property rights and protection of interests of rightsholders in cases of use of their works in digital interactive networks, including the Internet.

We pay royalties quarterly thru ROMS.

At the same time, we've tried to get in touch with all big US publishers, and we've got no response. They are NOT interested to do anything about this. The only thing they care -- is to shut down all tabs websites with no alternative to offer. From an economic standpoint, MPA activity will led to no results. Until they can offer a license to such websites or at least decided on a price per tablature, there will be dozens new tablature websites every month. Can they see this? I guess not.

Anyway, what does it mean? Nothing. We are legal. We are not going to shut down the website. All you need to know is that we will face the threat and will fight back until you're using the website, contribute and support us.

UG rocks, I think the MPA should be more worried about how inaccurate and overpriced tab books are, then about UG. The music industry fought the illegal pirating of music by addapting with things like iTunes, obviously the MPA is run by a bunch of idiots becuase they are just trying to out power the tab sites. Tabs are perfectly legal I think, there is nothing wrong with learning a song in the privacy of your own home, plus you would spend more money buying a tab book for an album then you would actually buying the album itself most of the time.

Although the MPA CAN'T shut down UG, they can still attack us pretty darn bad. They can sue those who upload tabs onto this site(no way to track down everyone who uses a certain tab but uploaders could be tracked down by their usernames via IP addresses) that live in the US since it is "copyright infringement" in their eyes. The same way that the RIAA couldn't shut down Kazaa but still sued users thousands of dollars for copyright infringement. Hopefully, that never happens and I'm not completely sure whether the aforementioned could actually happen in our legal system(it seems logical in the legal system if tablature is declared copyright infringement) and I hope I'm wrong so feel free to flame me if I am wrong.

But I don't see how tabs are copyright infringement. The musician's music is spread to a wider audience and is enjoyed more. Also, people tab these songs themselves, not scan a page out of a tab book onto their computers and upload. They listen, play, and see how it flows. The versions vary greatly, it is the tab author's interpretation of how the song is played. And tab books are WAY overpriced and somewhat inaccurate.

christ. so the MPA or whatever thinks that we should pay 10 quid (in UK) per tab book (also forgetting the fact that not every album has a book made, in fact very few do) rather than exchange info over the net, when in fact most of it is someone's interpretation of it anyway. that's ridiculous. its clear to see that music as an art form, a hobby or an emotional release is of little consequence to them, and their hearts lie firmly in their wallets. this makes me sad.

UltimateGuitar has a pretty decent selection of GuitarPro tabs, but from my experience MySongBook had a much larger collection. Im not a great guitar player... and niether can i find the time to actually learn a song by ear. However i love music and love to play. UG along with other tab sites have been my teachers. Im self taught like most of the people here thanks to UG.

Tabs are the user's interpretation of the song. Thats why some of them are correct and some of them arnt. Since when did teaching someone the chords or notes of a song become illegal? Every teacher does that. Are they all doing an illegal activity? Thats ridiculous. Tabs are just an online representation of a teacher teaching someone what HE THINKs are the chords or notes to a song. MPA can burn in hell for all i care. Music is supposed to be an emotional release not a money making medium..... it already makes the artists rich.... MPA taking away the sharing and teaching aspect of it is bull****.

I do not know what id do if something happened to UG as that would take away my musical education. I love UG and they have my support.

If Ultimate Guitar gets shut down, I will not be able to learn guitar much further. I live in a small community with no access to a suitable teacher and so I have turned to UG for musical education.

I have seen the effect that the closing of MXTabs has had on my drumming friend, his education has come to a complete standstill. I am afraid this will happen to me as well if UG goes the same way.

How can the MPA say that I, an Australian, do not have the right to view a fellow musician's freely-given oppinion on how to play a song, from a site based in Russia? The US does not rule the world!

I've come to this site for a long time and never joined until i found out it was actually staying online. Those yank mother****ers can suck a dick! Fuck those guys! The MPA should be brought down UG is operating within legal boundaries. They don't know what their saying all they care about are the people that think UG is plagarizing from, but all tabs have their sources cited, and UG does pay their due royalties, and since UG is working legally there is nothing wrong with these tabs and since UG is based in Russia does that mean that the MPA believes the constition of the US does not apply even though all people anywhere should be equal and so just because UG is russian based it's Ok to be unconstitutional is that really how the MPA wants to be labeled as Racists. Fine, as if they weren't already and even if UG was based in the states then they should still be allowed to post tabs on theyr site if they were paying the royalties for everyone deserves their due, because of the 1st amendment FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. Conclusion, MPA, unconstitiutional, racist, and hypocritical. UG Forever and ever AMEN.

if the MPA got ther way and you had to pay for tabs in tab books, how would you be able to learn songs from not so commercial, or successful bands?? as i cant see bands smaller bands brinign out a tab book tht surely wont sell. so as a result, they dont only intent to take away the tabs on the internet, but probably remove of 90% of the music thts out there for us to learn currently resulting in a surge of mainstream guitar players. am i correct or misled here?
