Weezer Tour Cancelled After Bus Crash

Weezer has cancelled its remaing 2009 tour dates following the upstate New York bus crash that left frontman River Cuomo hospitalized with broken ribs and other injuries. Karl Koch, the band's webmaster and longtime collaborator, posted details of the crash and made the announcement in a posting on the band's Website on Sunday (Dec. 6).

The bus crash, which occurred on an icy stretch of I-90 about 40 miles north of Albany, N.Y., was more serious that original reports suggested. Cuomo, his wife and baby daughter, their nanny, and Rivers' assistant Sarah Kim were all aboard the bus when it went over a guardrail and landed, upright, 8-10 feet down in a ravine.

Cuomo, who was asleep in his bunk at the time of the crash, sustained three broken ribs and other unspecified internal injuries. He remains under observation in an area hospital. Kim also sustained two fractured ribs and a fractured lower vertebrae but has been released from the hospital. Cuomo's wife, baby and nanny were shaken but unharmed.

Thanks for the report to Billboard.com.

Agreed^^^ It's great to hear his wife and baby were unharmed! And a few broken ribs he can get over, I'm looking forward to hearing some of the material he writes over this unexpected break, assuming that some of it will likely end up on his next album. Doesn't he write like a song a day or something??

We don't need another Cliff Burton incident. Hopefully we get a successful recovery, Weezer was incredible when they played in Hartford.

We'll be playing and having fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can't control my bus

but seriously... they're wrong. it was 40 miles west of Albany, he is/was at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.

Lets hope this wakes Rivers up so he can start writing decent songs again! Not that I hate any of the new stuff, but old Weezer is undoubtedly the best..

Dumb. A true weezer fan loves ALL weezer albums. I do. I actually saw them in Milwaukee like 2 nights before this happened!

PS if any of you are considering seeing weezer, DO IT. The general setlist they've been playing on this tour is INCREDIBLE and they're playing it REAAALLLY well. Rivers was AMAZING. go see 'em.

awisinger wrote on 12/08/2009 - 12:44 pm / quote |
I agree with Altitudinous. I was at the same show at the Rave and I really don't like the new stuff, so sue me, but they did a great job of playing the old stuff. Worth every cent for that concert.

Being a true fan of a band doesn't mean you have to love everything that band releases. Make Believe and Raditude are turds, and everything past the Green Album is decent at best. Weezer's still one of my favorite bands, even though I don't like some of their stuff.

On topic, I hope he's ok, and thank God his family is doing well.

Even if someone does write good music during critical moments in their lives, why would some of you want that to happen to them? Just to satisfy your own self gratification? That just seems obscenely selfish.

According to Karl's post about it on their myspace, the bus driver getting the bus to land upright was a big help in keeping everyone alive. This could have been so much worse. Here's to a speedy recovering, Sarah and Rivers.

The other unspecified internal injuries were a slightly punctured lung and a slightly lacerated spleen, for anyone wondering.

don't mean to sound like a downer, but how do you control a flipping bus... come on now... it's just coincidence that it landed upright (unless the driver has super powers)

Glad to hear everyone's okay. Second bus crash involving bands in a week, I heard that Every Time I Die and Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster were involved in a smash in Germany (90% sure it was Germany, somewhere in Europe anyway) on their Taste Of Chaos bus, but luckily they're all alright as well.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the crew & families affected. Me being in this line of work, and having buddies on the road, shit happens. When it comes down to it, it's really not a glamorous job....long days (day starts @ 8am & end @ 1am the next day) for low pay (day rate), really. But we do this for the love of it!

Historically, "Cliff Burton" incidents tend to happen to bass players in Sweden, ie Cliff Burton himself or the guy from Evile.
