It has been officially announced that The White Stripes have split after 13 years.
A statement on their official site, which is already down because of high traffic, said the split was "not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues," but for a "myriad of reasons … mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way."
Jack and
Meg White wanted to thank their fans for their support, and said their label
Third Man Records would continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings for their subscription record club, as well as through regular channels.
The rock duo hope that their fans will see it at "a positive move done out of respect for the art and the music that the band has created.
"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to … your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."
There will be speculation as to why the group decided to call it a day rather than announce an amicable hiatus, which would leave the door open to a dignified reunion in the future. Some commentators over their history considered Jack to be the driving talent in the band, who also performed with The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather while also leading a solo career.
We'll announce more details if they arise. What do our readers think - is this a loss to music, or will their spare time be a creative benefit to the industry?
But anyways, this is disappointing. Not that I was into the White Stripes, but they were one of the better bands in the industry.
