This criminally underappreciated Louisiana funk band usually remained just outside the spotlight, backing stars like Paul McCartney and Dr. John.
However, this 1969 track – the first on their self-titled debut – served the band well as a major chart hit.
Chock full of syncopated swagger, it is a triumph, covered by everyone from John Scofield to John Mayer.
Van Halen: "Eruption"
We’re pretty sure this song is on every great guitar solo list ever drafted. Appearing on Van Halen’s eponymous 1978 album, it ushered in classic, indulgent ’80s rock. Engaging in spellbinding two-handed tapping, Eddie Van Halen’s fingers appear as a blur on his guitar strings. For the first 20 seconds, Eddie is accompanied by drummer Alex Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony, but is then left to stir this chaotic cauldron on his own.
Booker T. & The M.G.’s: "Green Onions"
Released in 1962, the same year that Booker T. & The M.G.’s formed, this cheerful soul instrumental featured Booker T. Jones on a trippy Hammond organ and Steve Cropper on guitar. The song – which peaked at #3 on the pop chart – was the biggest hit that the groundbreaking Memphis R&B group would ever experience.
The Allman Brothers Band: "Jessica"
Among the songs on 1973’s Brothers And Sisters, "Jessica" is a freewheelin’ feel-good instrumental written by Dickey Betts (as a tribute to jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt) and Les Dudek, who played with the band following Duane Allman’s death. "Jessica" is the name of Betts’ daughter.
Led Zeppelin: "Moby Dick"
This is one whale of a drum solo, included as the penultimate track on 1969’s Led Zeppelin II. It also was John Bonham’s moment of concert glory for nearly nine years. Robert Plant would announce Bonham, then bow off-stage as the crowd grew silent and Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones lit into a fiery drop-D, blues-based riff. Then – with his head bowed, shaggy hair flying – Bonham got the whole place to himself. He dove headfirst into a primal freak-out. It was magic.
Duane Eddy: "Rebel Rouser"
A guitarist from Arizona who hit the big time during the 1960s, Duane Eddy broke out with the twangy, echoing "Rebel Rouser" in 1958. It was like nothing anyone had heard before. Co-written by producer Lee Hazlewood, who recorded it in an old grain silo, the song was delivered on a Gibson L-5 (later commemorated with the magnificent Duane Eddy Signature model).
Link Wray And His Ray Men: "Rumble"
Introduced in 1958, Link Wray’s sultry "Rumble" was vastly ahead of its time, toying with power chords, fuzztone and reverb. It is believed to be the only instrumental song ever banned from radio. Several stations chose not to play it because there was concern that the song, which sounds like a street fight, would incite violence. Today, Link Wray’s stamp can be found on the work of musicians like Pete Townshend, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Bob Dylan, who called "Rumble" the "best instrumental ever."
The Who: "Sparks"
The Who’s "Sparks" begins with what sounds like an intergalactic blast-off then tromps off into an artful collision of guitar, bass and drums. An integral part of the Who’s 1969 double album, the rock opera Tommy, this song seems to be the work of a full orchestra. But nope, it’s just one hell of a power trio.
The Ventures: "Walk Don’t Run"
The best-selling instrumental group of all time, The Ventures took on this Chet Atkins song – "Walk Don’t Run" (originally written in 1955 by guitarist Johnny Smith) in 1960 – simplifying and speeding up Atkins’ version. This tune helped to usher in the surf guitar trend.
The Surfaris: "Wipe Out"
The surf rock band of all surf rock bands, The Surfaris’ 1963 hit caused bathing suit beauties around the world to shake what their mama gave them. Their energetic original, "Wipe Out," launches with a manic drum solo, then gives away to barreling guitar. It sounds like a Southern California beach party.
Another stupid stupid list. You can't have a top 10 instrumentals list without Peaches En Regalia by Zappa. You just can't. It's forbidden. Also I'd add Wedding Nails or Burning Sky by Porcupine Tree, almost anything by Al DiMeola and Rodrigo y Gabriela for that matter, La Villa Strangiato by Rush, something from Vai like Boston Rain Melody maybe (FTLOG would be the popular choice, that needs to be on the list really) and something from Ozric Tentacles like Plant music, Psychic Chasm or Sultana Detrii. And LOADS more!
I don't know why I even bother to read these lists, they piss me off so much.
sorry for the double post, but i take back the anesthesia thing back. and indeed, fadetoblack84, where are the modern day sologuitarists (joe satriani/steve vai, and yngwie is a bad artist (awesome guitarist btw) but some songs are good, and last but not least john petrucci)?
+1 to this...and...JESSICA?! I've never met ANYONE who's liked that annoying mess. And...I see a lot of people saying YYZ, and why I'm not a HUGE fan of the song, it REALLY should be there. XD Who makes these lists, what are they smoking, and where can I get some?
Pretty boring list if you ask me. No disrespect intended to any of those bands or to the songs but if those are the greatest instrumental tracks you can find then you're not looking properly
Come on UG! YOu should know better than to do a Top 10 or Best of.. list.
Hey man, these lists they do bring some of the most discussion of any kind of news article because they're controversial. The more discussion they can ignite with a news article, the better UG is doing.
come on,yes ther picking songs wich made it big....i thought cliffs of dover and surfing with the alien were both somewhat....hit instrumentals, right? no rush song either,no yngwie malmsteen,no chet atkins or jerry reed.really getting pissed at UG for supporting such complete garbege, these news articles get worst and worst.
Apache, Becks Bolero, Interstellar overdrive, Cause we ended as lovers, Don't rain on my firewood, West end blues, Zomby Wolf and Goodbye pork hat seem to be missing from your list.
Hocus Pocus?
well, it has vocals, but no words, so wouldn't that make it instrumental, well at least I would think so.
and the singer uses his voice like an instrument
"WHERE'S ALL THE PROG AND METAL THERE'S NO PROG AND METAL THESE GUYS ARE RETARDS"
Even as a prog and metal fan, I'm ashamed that this site's fanbase isn't a little more open minded.
Perhaps its because there are simply more obvious choices that are worth mentioning. The list is just as lacking in open mindedness as we are (seriously a few choices are simply out of touch.)
Why dont they make a voting so the top 10 list is chosen by UG users?they only end up puting a top 10 and then see 100 comments full of UG users disagreeing about the list.
Actaully if you look, this was on Gibson.com. All the bands mention have guitarist that use Gibson's, go figure. Its all just shameless advertisement.
The Surfaris and Ventures didn't. They were Fender and Mosrite men.
Even more reason to wonder why there wasn't a Rush instrumental on the list since Alex Lifeson has used Gibson guitars plenty of times both live and in the studio.
Honestly, Metallica fans will bitch about any list that doesn't include them. Other genres focusing on instrumental song writing that are underrated and unrepresented? 'Fuck it lol, there's some instrumentals Metallica did...'.
Hocus Pocus?
well, it has vocals, but no words, so wouldn't that make it instrumental, well at least I would think so.

also, Cliffs of Dover[/quote
Same, i was gonna say that and the great gig in the sky.

because if they did that, there would be 0 diversity in the list. the top 10 instrumentals would then be the top 10 METAL instrumentals

but, i do like that idea. unfortunately, it won't work here
Nothing original in this list, really, it's like all the other instrumentals list. Oh and to the guy saying gibson guitars only... since when does EVH use them? Oh and stop getting so excited over "eruption" it was interesting in 1978, now it's just boring because of all the unnecessary attention it gets.
This is a pretty narrow list in terms of style/genre.. I'm missing some Mogwai or Battles here, just something from the Post-Rock area of things really... oh and would choose "Black Mountain Side" as the Zep track
No Paul Gilbert? The man is a genius, but I suppose all he does is mostly instrumental.
Technical Difficulties classed as Racer-X should definitely be up there though.
ALL of the Metallica instrumentals need to be on here, even Suicide and Redemption. Also as everyone else said, YYZ, Cliffs of Dover, and a few others are definitely worthy.
If you're not throwing in some absolute epic songs from other genre's in a top 10, at least make a top 15. Cliffs of Dover, Call of Ktulu, Instrumedely, Satriani, Vai, Yngwie, Little Wing.
buckethead - soothsayer, jordan, welcome to buckethead land
paul gilbert - technical difficulties, scarified, screamin' blues
joe satch - summer song
eric johnson - cliffs of dover
john petrucci - glasgow kiss
metallica - orion
Green Onions has no variation so it shouldn't be up there for me - it just goes on and on and on and that's not good for a song that's 2 and a half minutes long...
As for a good instrumental, 'Look Up' by Zero 7 - harmonica solo throughout
Gregray88 wrote:
Eruption should not be on here. A couple licks thrown together (however good they are) shouldn't be considered an instrumental.
AsPhInCtErSaYsWhAt? baking powder? exsqueze me? eruption is epic. eddie practicly invented tapping guitar and this is his masterpiece to show it, it one of the hardest songs i know to play
they need orion by metallica, transylvania by iron maiden and about eruption, EvH also did Cathedral and Spanish Fly, which are both in my opinion better than eruption. It's gotten old, everyone has heard it, and people can do better now. Cathedral > Eruption.
'tallica-orion
and death-voice of the soul...
(and metallica's anesthesia puling teath, call of ktulu but if i had to choose one that would be orion...)

You know nothing about guitar if you think Eruption is one of the hardest songs ever. Why do you think all those show-offs in high school talent shows play it? Because it's not that complicated. Go listen to guitarists with enough talent to do more than throw a couple o' licks together (Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson, Buckethead, even Dave Mustaine for that matter), then come back to me.
I think a lot of you are being kind of harsh. I agree that a lot of amazing instrumentals are missing. But at the beginning of the list it states "instrumentals that everyone would know" Someone may not know the name Green Onions, but could say "the song from Sandlot". Orion, Cliffs of Dover, ect...all may be amazing, but does every person walking on the street know them, no...
I know that this list SHOULDN'T be purely metal/prog etc, but the fact there's barely any is just as close minded as if it was a list full of Satriani/Vai/Buckethead/Rush etc.
I agree with a lot of the ones said on here, so no need to repeat them, however may I also include Pink Floyd's 'One of These Days' and 'Interstellar Overdrive'

yeah there's too many nimrods *cough little kids cough* on here that would just pick their favorites instead of picking which ones are truely the best. unfortunately, most "top xxx" lists are like that *cough Rolling Stone cough*
OH NO!! METALLICA IS NOT ON THE LIST!! IT IS A SH!T LIST!!!! I love metallica's instrumentals as much as everybody else but they don't have to be on EVERY list.
I think considering Metallicas immense popularity, and the fact that all those songs are bassicly choosen because of there popularity, Metallica would fit on the list. Thats being said, Orion, The Call of Ktulu, are so good at least one should be on any instrumental list.
And for the record, some fool said Where Eagles Dare and To Live Is To Die are intrumentals, no there not you ****ing morons.
I knew most of these (with the exceptions of "Green Onions" and "Cissy Strut")... but I was disappointed that Chet Atkins' solo version of "Vincent" didn't make it on here That piece is simply amazing. Overall though, a pretty good list.

Um.... To Live is to Die is an instrumental... Way to make yourself look like a douche...
Buckethead - Night of the slunk (live), Soothsayer, Nottingham Lace, Siege Engine
LTE - when the water breaks
Joe Satch - Crushing Day
Dream Theater - Erotomania
--that list simply can't be limited to 10
I personally would go for Ktulu > Orion but the mere fact that Metallica isn't on this list just makes the list broken to me. Also I know this is a relatively new song, but Chimaira's "Heart of it All" song is one the best pieces of music I have heard in a really long time.
Jeff Loomis - Zero Order Phase (album)
Jeff Beck - Emotion & Commotion (album)
also, Chimaira has made some instrumentals as well, and then there's 'Qualia' by The Psyke Project (though it has a very little bit of vokals in the very end).
and Alpha Trion! They haven't got a singer so all their demoes are instrumental (which I love)! ^^
Did any notice that this is a Classic Rock article. Spanish Fly is better than Eruption imo. But everyone should get over the fact that Metallica isn't on there. If you want wicked instrumentals listen to Animals As Leaders.
Why is UG posting this? You know that with the average UG user's knowledge of guitarists such as Satriani, Vai, etc. (I could go on and on and on; I just can't think of all the names that could be included here) -- you just know that we'd completely disagree with such an article.
Frankenstein - Edgar Winter Band
Surfing With The Alien - Joe Satriani
Meltdown - Vinnie Moore
La Villa Strangiato - Rush
YYZ - Rush
Almost anything by Dick Dale
There are a couple of nice choices on the list but, come on...
YYZ needed a spot, but Jessica deserved a spot too.
Would have liked to have seen "Maggot Brain" up there, maybe even "Before the Beginning"..
And certainly something by Mogwai.. "Friend of the Night" springs to mind
Looks like whoever came up with this list was applying a 'no metal policy' (unless you consider Van Halen to be Metal). I agree this is a pretty crappy list. They didn't even have Telstar, the instrumental that was the first #1 song by a British band, The Tornados.
WTF George Lynch MR. Scary should have easily made that list. It has to be one of the top 10 greatest instrumentals of all time who cmes up with these lists. No this is not me playing it but give the guy some love he is spectacular. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxkBH44cWUM&feature=related
Frankenstein really should be on this list.
I don't think anybody's mentioned Stevie Ray Vaughan's instrumental version of Little Wing. Or what about Lenny?
another excuse for douchebag classic rock fans to be elitist, despite the fact their music sucks and their mentality sucks (the music is actually awesome but is tainted by these twats), orion (or to live is to die) and yyz SHOULD be here, but alas...
At least they have Moby Dick. But I'd love to see some Transylvania up in this bitch.
And c'mon, what about No Quarter by Alestorm? Yes, Pirate Metal is real!
this is ridiculous. imean, wha?
Acid Rain - Liquid Tension Eperiment!!!
Orion - Metallica!!!
Canon Rock - Jerry C!!!(iknow its cheesy but still)
Tetris - Powerglove!
Call Of Katulu - Metallica!
im dissapointed, this list is terrible..
Honestly, Metallica fans will bitch about any list that doesn't include them. Other genres focusing on instrumental song writing that are underrated and unrepresented? 'Fuck it lol, there's some instrumentals Metallica did...'.
Right, because people who bitch about songs by *other* artists not being in the list aren't fans of said bands, right retard?
YYZ, Orion/Ktulu, Frankenstein, '95 Snakepit's Jizz da Pit...
How about some post-rock, even? The first EP by This Will Destroy You, Young Mountain, has some quality songs. Happiness, Quiet, and I Believe In Your Victory are all pretty excellent in my opinion.
Not a bad list at all, but could have been much, much longer. I played in an instrumental cover band for a while, and pretty much all of the songs listed here were on our set list at some point in time. Missing from the list:
Always with me, always with you (almost anything by Satriani)
Call of Ktulu
YYZ
For The Love of God (almost anything by Vai)
Honeysuckle Rose (instrumental Jazz standard)
Samba Pa Ti
...

Idiot, Eddie did NOT invent tapping, don't even use that word and tapping together because tapping is an age-old technique that was used in the 50s, Eddie POPULARIZED it, did NOT invent it.
Best Instrumentals (not listed):
Frankenstein - Edgar Winter Group
Jeff's Boogie - The Yardbirds
Tequila - The Champs
Telstar - The Tornadoes
Sleep Walk - Santo and Johnny
Man Of Mistery - The Shadows
Classical Gas - Mason Williams
Pick Up the Pieces - Average White Band
Turf's Up - Brad Paisley
Misirlou - Dick Dale
Pipeline - The Chantays
Babylon - Frank Marino (the instrumental version on Guitar Speak II)
Grande Finale - Alice Cooper
Apostrophe' - Frank Zappa
Rock 'N' Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter
Battle Without Honor or Humanity - Hotei Tomoyasu
Tijuana Surf - The Hollywood Persuaders
Altitudes - Jason Becker
Top Gun Anthem - Steve Stevens
El Becko - Jeff Beck
Bourée - Jethro Tull
Satch Boogie - Joe Satriani (too many others to list of his)
Black Mountain Side - Led Zeppelin
Love Is Blue - Paul Mauriat
Preludin - Pavlov's Dog
La Villa Strangiato - Rush
Bad Horsie - Steve Vai
Cathedral - Van Halen
Apache - The Ventures
Orion - Metallica
THE FIRE AND THE FURY - FIREWIND
THIS SONG OWN'S ALL INSTRUMENTALS!!!!
Kind of a bland song, in my opinion.
I am surprised to see no Vai, Satch, or Beck. But it seems like this list is mostly emphasis on a band rather than a soloist, with an exception or two. But I'm glad it's not a list of a ton of shredders, even though there are many brilliant "shred" instrumentals.
Why do people even make lists like this anymore? There are far too many great instrumental songs to be compressed into a top 10 list. Top 10,000 maybe.
of course it`s biased to gibson and their subsidary companies, i bet if steve vai or john petrucci endorsed gibson the you would see for the love of god or glasgow kiss up there, it`s just one persons biased opinion to satisfy their marketing quota....it actually means nothing and is completely pointless, those of us that enjoy instrumentals know the truth as to what is a good instrumental and eruption doesn`t qualify due to it`s lack of melodic content.
Orion and/or Call of Ktulu should be there... i actually like this list (minus eruption- overplayed, and jessica- boring). Other notables are Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) by Maiden, Classical Gas by Mason Williams and jesus how could they miss SRV!!!!! Scuttle Buttin'!!!!!

I CANT BELIVE YOU INCLUDED "TELSTAR"
thats th resone we name our band telstar an amazing track
The omission of either YYZ or La Villa Strangiato is ignorant and under-researched. YY won the Grammy for best instrumental in 1981 and Rush has been performing for 35 years. A little respect, please?
Also, concur with the comment about Eruption above: great guitar solo but not an instrumental.
I don't really get why "Rumble" is so special. It's the same thing over and over and over again. I especially don't see how it sounds like a street fight. I mean, I know the 50's was so much more conservative but shit.. It doesn't make me want to fight. It makes me want to light up a J and watch Pulp Fiction.
I hate these stupid as articles. They're not news, and they're just some random guys opinions. Top 10 instrumentals of all time? Haha. More like "my 10 favorite instrumentals".
Please UG, these articles are plain stupid to be completely honest!
Lamb of God's Ashes of the Wake (yes, it's song too) is great too.
I'm not sure if enough people like Lamb of God for an inclusion on a list like this though.
Because people named "John 5", "Joe Satriani", "Steve Vai", "Buckethead", "Marty Friedman", "Yngwie Malmsteen", and the almighty "Paul Gilbert" don't exist.
This list, in my honest opinion, is flawed on too many levels. There are Artist out there whose success is driven purely by there instrumental efforts. Why aren't there greatest feats featured on a list that (I would think) would be dedicated to there genre (Instrumental Rock I presume)..?
la villa strangiato, yyz, dialectic chaos, into the lungs of hell, victory is one, trinity, for the love of god, hand on heart, gettin the hell outta here....the list goes on and besides you could make a better list with just Steve Vai songs
"Hey let's put on some really old stuff I wasn't even alive when it was out to look musically savvy. It's common knowledge that all modern music sucks anyway, no one's going to give me shit for that."
Sadly it's not that hard to guess the writers's minds when it comes to this "top 10" kind of articles.
At least they have Moby Dick. But I'd love to see some Transylvania up in this bitch.
And c'mon, what about No Quarter by Alestorm? Yes, Pirate Metal is real!
Rush: YYZ
Rush: Malignant Narcicissm
Rush: Limbo
Rush: Leave That Thing Alone
Rush: Where's My Thing?
Rush: LA VILLA STRANGIATO
Rush: Hope
Rush: (Drum Solo pick one...)
Rush: The Main Monkey Business
Rush: About 75% of 95% of their songs is instrumental
This list is no particular order, just the order they popped into my head. haha
I dig this list. Surprised that there wasn't Vai or Satch but honestly I don't mind. Jessica is one of the happiest sounding songs ever. To convey that emotion from an instrumental is impressive. I remember hearing "Rumble" in the movie Blow and thought it had a pretty bad ass attitude about it.
You know The Ventures didn't originally do Apache right? It was The Shadows.
Yeah I know, I thought about writing Shadows but I like The Ventures version more (it's the version I grew up listening too). Although The Shadows are legends in their own right.
More instrumentals I could have added:
Bijou - Queen
Interstellar Overdrive - Pink Floyd
Impulse - An Endless Sporadic
Hocus Pocus - Focus (I consider it instrumental)
Jordan - Buckethead
Jack And The Ripper - Buckethead
Any Colour You Like - Pink Floyd
Tuna Fish Every Day - Southern Culture on the Skids
Watermelon in Easter Hay - Frank Zappa
Peter Gunn Theme - Henry Mancini (that's really digging deep)
Mister Sandman - Chet Atkins (Chordettes cover, amazingly difficult to play)
Time Is Tight - Booker T. & The M.G.'s
If you want to go really deep:
Sunday Afternoon In The Park - Van Halen
1984 - Van Halen
Popcorn - Hot Butter
Don't know if it's been mentioned or not but Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" is a great instrumental. Cliffs of Dover had a lot of air play which most instrumental songs do not get. Why yes it did win a grammy award in 1991.
Agree about YYZ and Orion, however you just met a fan of "Jessica." Congratulations.
this list is complete bollocks mate, cant even believe this missed like 100 way better instrumentals **** me im not even gonna start naming them as its making me angry
Cliffs of Dover and Satch Boogie were played alot when they were released. Orion, not so much, which is why it doesn't really qualify . YYZ was played alot as well. The list is more aimed at widely known instrumentals to people other than guitarists. Link Wray's Rumble was one of the first widely played instrumentals featuring guitar. I will say though that even though it has been widely played, Eruption doesn't really qualify as an instrumental.
Hardly. Tapping's been around for a very long time. Like, over a hundred years. And the fact that you mentioned you can play eruption in your post tells me you're 14.
- Rush?
- Metallica?
- Pink Floyd?
- King Crimson?
- The Shadows?
- The Tornados?
- Andy McKee?
- Break of Reality?
- Apocalyptica?
- Camel?
- Buckethead?
- Cacophony?
- Coldplay?
- Dream Theater?
- Joe Satriani?
- Liquid Tension Experiment?
- Opeth?
- Penguin Cafe Orchestra?
- Phish?
- The Beatles?
- Dick Dale?
- Many other artists?
This list is really lacking in the amount of work put into it.
Oh, and not to forget: Where are all the classical music artists? I'm guessing none are on here because you want guitar-related instrumentals, so I'll pass on this one.
Just throw in the word list in the title and people go crazy as if the list was an insult directed at them.
Mankind is famous for their ability to learn from their mistakes and also infamous for the ability to learn nothing from their mistakes.
I really think 'One of these days' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQvG2SMVl84 should have made the list. Also Call of Ktulu maybe. Pink floyd should have had at least 2 songs I would think on this list, I also think 'Transylvania' by Iron Maiden should be on here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfEJU4KUEkk
I agree this list wasn't ideal (of course there should be a little of every genre!) or in fact any good. Like last article I visited that basically turned into a ****storm, I'd wish for UG to never, EVER copy any articles from any site ever again. Make them yourself UG, and I can basically guarantee your mods will have a whole lot less spamm cleanin' to do.
There is no such thing as a top 10 instrumentals list. Awful idea really. Way too many great instrumental rock classics out there.
i know this list might as well be best "guitar" songs ever and people would still be complaining about how their favorite band isnt recognized. thats why these lists are pointless
Rush - YYZ and La Villa Strangiato
Dream Theater - Stream of Consciousness, Ytse Jam, Overture 1928, Erotomania
Anything by Liquid Tension Experiment
Joe Satriani - too many to list
Queensryche - Anarchy X
Symphony X - Death of Balance/Lacrymosa, Oculus ex Inferni
The list goes on
I love eruption but I don't think it belongs on this list
The only songs in here that deserve to be here are Moby Dick and Eruption. A good instrumental songs list should include: Orion by Metallica, Transylvannia by Iron Maiden, Preludio Obsesivo by Rata Blanca (a guitar solo by Walter Giardino), Anesthesia (Pulling Theet) by Metallica (bass solo by Cliff Burton) and deffinately something by Jason Becker and something by Marty Friedman. And, to the person that said Classic Rock is a superior genre, you seriously have to really stupid to say that (exept, obiusly, if you're a 75 yrs old grandpa in that case it is comprehensible that you know so little about good music)
I thinkt he idea of this top 10 was to pick instrumentals that EVERYONE would know(including your mama) so it makes sense that they didn't have Rush and Metallica on here(YYZ and Orion) because not everybody knows those songs.
Can't be a instrumental list without SRV - Lenny, its the first one I thought of when I clicked on the headline and yet I figured UG would find a why to disappoint me, Thanks!
Where the FUCK is John Butler. Sorry, my bad that sounds totally elitist, I apologize. Seriously though. I'm deeply in love with music. I live and breath music. Ocean by John Butler literally changed my life, and the way I look at things. Don't think I'm exaggerating, because I'm not. Look it up, listen to as many versions as you can. It is proof that one man and his 12 string can change the world. Please, everyone look it up.
I love wipeout, but does anyone else think misirlou should have been the surf rock song represented in this list.
Misirlou probably ought to be the top surf song, and it's better than anything on the list. Still room for the 2 other surf songs, though; just bump off one of the 5 songs that sucked on the list
Ummm.... What about Orion by Metallica or Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson..... For The Love of God wht arent these songs on here (know thats a wordless song too)

Possibly the most pleasing aurally and technically frustratingly beautiful instrumental ever is Cliffs of Dover. I am a hardcore Rush fan and would of course love to see La Villa, YYZ, even the Main Monkey Business on this list, but to leave off Cliffs of Dover is a travesty. Summer Song by Satch is right behind. How do you go from Eruption to Booker T? I love me some Green Onions, but it doesn't belong on this list. I would take Petite Etude by Triumph before some of the stuff on this list. Too broad of a subject, but I guess the point is to get people talking? SRV Lenny... damn... I could keep going.. haha
YYZ
Orion
To live is to Die
For the love of God
call of ktulu
anesthesia pulling teeth
Soothsayer
clifs of dover
ashes of the awake
stream of consciousness
surfing with a alien
COME ON, YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!!
NOT ONE OF THESE ARE ON THE LIST, WTF!
EVH actually uses a Charvel for Eruption(I believe) but is a progenitor of Ernie Ball's Guitars now... and I believe the frankenstein guitar is also a ripped apart Charvel. There are some Kramers in there too I believe...

Actaully if you look, this was on Gibson.com. All the bands mention have guitarist that use Gibson's, go figure. Its all just shameless advertisement. You are stupid. Eddie Van Halen uses a Strat. You are ignorant. I wish you were dead.
Orioin doesn't belong here so stop mentioning it. Just an overly long and boring song made to fulfill Cliff's ego. Eruption is a good choice, probably the most influential solo ever and contains one of the world's first segments of two-hand tapping in a rock context. This list did leave out Satriani and Vai which is incredibly disappointing.
Really disappointing list. Nothing by:
- Rush?
- Metallica?
- Pink Floyd?
- King Crimson?
- The Shadows?
- The Tornados?
- Andy McKee?
- Break of Reality?
- Apocalyptica?
- Camel?
- Buckethead?
- Cacophony?
- Coldplay?
- Dream Theater?
- Joe Satriani?
- Liquid Tension Experiment?
- Opeth?
- Penguin Cafe Orchestra?
- Phish?
- The Beatles?
- Dick Dale?
- Many other artists?
This list is really lacking in the amount of work put into it.
Oh, and not to forget: Where are all the classical music artists? I'm guessing none are on here because you want guitar-related instrumentals, so I'll pass on this one.
The reason the Great Beatles weren't on here is be cause they only had two instrumental song Flying and 12 Bar Originall... Both very good but I wouldnt place them in the top 10... #1 John Lennon fan and #1 Beatles fan
haha are you kidding me? it completely changed metal, it was the birth of freaking tapping! it was decades ahead of music, not to mention everyone freaking loves it and has to jump around and play air guitar when they hear it

some stratovarious songs, nightwish, dream theater, metallica, megadeth, etc etc songs to be add to this list
but w/e this list is good, but "Of All Time" lists can go to hell since "All Time Lists" would probably crash all our webpages since they'll be so long/so many of them, and not to say everyones different choices

Unless you wanna cout Revolution 9 with the exception of "Number nine" being repeated..... #1 John Lennon fan and #1 Beatles fan
Hmmm.... where is The Mahavishnu Orchestra? "Open Country Joy" belongs on this list. Also, would've put "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" on the list in the place of "Jessica"

Agreed with Xomar except I don't air guitar I play it on my real guitar lol
What's up with the endless cries of "Orion! Orion! Orion!"
There are plenty a song better than Orion. I personally prefer ANY of Metallica's instrumentals before Orion, simply I find Orion quite boring compared to Call of Ktulu.
As for Eruption... It's not an instrumental. It's a freaking drawn-out solo. The entire song is a solo. No bridge, no intro, no verse, nothin' but solo, babeh. Shouldn't be on the list.
There are a lot of more deserving songs on the list, but I made the point I wanted to make.

Lmfao...I love how everybody always thinks they're right, and for some odd reason, everyone thinks Metallica are the greatest band of all time whenever a list is mentioned, "Wheres xxx Metallica song?!?!"...lol, just an observation.

Listen to Orion, then you'll agree. Here's another observation. What's with all the songs on this list from the 50's, 60's, and 70's??? It's hard for me to believe that the greatest instrumentals "of all time" came out of three decades.
A couple songs that are definatelly better than most of that garbage up there that I don't think have been listed yet are...
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - TRAFFIC JAM
Buckethead - Big Sur Moon
Jimi Hendrix - Improv / Villanova Junction (Woodstock)
DJ Shadow - Broken Levee Blues
Ben Hantoot - The Parable of Math

YEAH! Where's all the Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, Paganini, Django, etc.?
You can't please everyone, and the more you try to do so, the harder you fail.
From modern artist I can say: Akira Yamaoka(Silent Hill Main Theme, Theme Of Laura, Promise and Love Psalm are one of the best guitar instrumental ever), Nobuo Uematsu, Pat Metheny.
Great Gig in the Sky? Any Colour you like? Signs of life? sure thats a lot of Floyd, BUT they're worth IT! But theres also Maggot Brain by Funkadelic! Or when Stevie Ray Vaughan covered Little Wing. Idk These lists always disappoint :-/
how the hell can't iron maidens losfer word be there??? its the best of ALL time!!!
and now that i think about it... where is "in the hall of the mountain king"??
I think for now on, I'll check the bottom of an article to see if its by Gibson before I bother reading it. I'd rather unbiased lists and articles anyday!
Apache, Becks Bolero, Interstellar overdrive, Cause we ended as lovers, Don't rain on my firewood, West end blues, Zomby Wolf and Goodbye pork hat seem to be missing from your list.
Metallica's instrumentals are sooooo lame! seriously, Liquid Tension Experiment easily puts their shit to shame, and I can easily think of hundreds of other bands that could out play/write/emote/jam/feel Metallica, and this is coming from a Metallica fan! Metallica is at its best when James Hetfield is fronting the band
How are these "Top 10..." lists even considered NEWS?!?!?
Also, this needs the S&M version of Call Of Ktulu. It's better than the studio version, and as good if not better than Orion. And yes, YYZ does need to be on the list too. And while we're there, how about Megadeth's Dialectic Chaos?
These articles are just an interesting read/listen - nothing more, nothing less. They are *good* instrumentals, no doubt about that, but when it comes to picking a top 10 or something, it's more popularity than anything.
This list is far from diverse
Where are the folk guitarists such as John Renbourn, Davey Graham etc.
Even the shred guitarists of the 80s and 90s aren't on here
And if they're gonna call it Greatest Instrumental pieces of ALL TIME, then I'm definately expecting Medieval and Classical pieces
Well in a perfect world I would be
Metallica fans always get enraged by the bands absence from lists, no matter what the subject.
ok what kind of music do you listen to. if you are here on a guitar website you would realize that it isnt just the fact that it is Metallica missing from the list but more importantly the man himself who had metallica full learn about music "Cliff Burton" his bass work on both Orion and Ktulu are reason enough for them to make this list but apparently the people who made this list are just putting "their" Favorites down on this list. and also you people who made this list missed "Marroned" by pink floyd as well. Oh and one more thing the list here is garbage the only one worthy on this list is eruption.
Some 'Tallica already been said but I would like to see Suicide and Redmemption. I actually like that one better than Orion. And wheres Cliffs of Dover and Satch Boogie?
I don't feel like reading through every comment to see if anyone else has said this but Dance of Eternity and Stream of Consciousness by Dream Theater belong up there.
Jessica is an amazing song! Lots of people love the Allman Brothers.
No Orion by Metallica?
Viridian by Between the Buried and Me?
La Villa Strangiato by Rush?
Hello!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!???? I want whatever UG's smokin because it's some good shit. Next thing you know they'll say Attack Attack!'s guitarists are great.
As usual, this list is totally pointless from the get-go since it's all opinion - IMO "Eruption" is nothing but utterly boring guitar wankery ...but it's great to see "Cissy Strut" in there =)
pelican should be this list.. but if you had to pick different bands id add:
Return to forever/al DiMeola, satriani, rush.
A lot of the stuff listed is good, i just think there's better for instrumental.
