Wicked Week: No More Pop-Punk!

The news week started with a report on Bono from U2's -- he paid a tribute to Pope John Paul II, who passed away last Saturday evening at the age of 84 -- “I met the Holy Father and I was so taken by this showman, even if I didn’t agree with everything he said." When the singer carried on speaking about a time six years ago, he gave the church head his trademark sunglasses. Then we had a few pleasant news on Ozzfest '05 -- Velvet Revolver got 3 additional dates and Mudvayne, known for their furious live shows, landed the much-coveted third spot on the tour's main stage, just before headliners Black Sabbath.

System Of A Down's upcoming 2-disc album's first half "Mezmerize" will see the daylight much earlier -- on May 16. Its tracklisting has been already unveiled. The first single from "Mezmerize/Hypnotize", called "B.Y.O.B.", debuted at the #1 position at WXRT/K-ROCK in New York.

Legendary Nirvana have been honoured this week in a bit unusual way. Their seminal album "Nevermind" is among the 50 sound recordings joining the U.S. Library of Congress National Recording Registry, which collects "culturally, historically or aesthetically important" recordings that "inform or reflect life in the United States." Other audio recordings to receive special preservation include Neil Armstrong's first words from the moon, John Williams's 1977 soundtrack to Star Wars and Public Enemy's 1989 album "Fear Of A Black Planet". And another great tour has been announced this week -- I'm speaking about Dave Mustaine's brainchild Gigantour, a six-week festival trek co-headlined by Megadeth and Dream Theater. Other mainstage acts include Fear Factory, Dillinger Escape Plan and Nevermore.

Same week we learned a bit funny stuff on Green Day -- a 28x43 foot billboard with Green Day's album's picture (a heart-shaped grenade gripped by a bloodied hand) was balked from putting on the Times Square hotel's outdoor wall. And yet another report on upcoming GN'R album has been revealed. Former assistant to Axl Rose Craig Duswalt has spoken about his time with Rose and GN'R: "I heard most of the tracks back in 1999 at a dinner at Axl's house with Brian May of Queen — he was adding some guitar tracks. The songs were phenomenal. I do not know the exact reasons the album has not been released yet, but I do know that Axl will only release what he is extremely happy with — he will never settle for less."

At the same time, Blink-182 and Transplants drummer Travis Barker revealed, speaking about MTV reality show "Meet The Barkers", that "Blink, as far as I'm concerned, is over." You heard it.

first of all, explain to me how heavy metal bands dont play real music... anything that is played out of an instrument is real music.. ok, now we got that over with, listen to some of that "crappy heavy metal" stuff and see how complex the songs are to play including all the scales and such, and compare it to the punk-pop regime of bands nowadays. a solo doesnt make a song (though it has often broken them). Just listen to immagrant song by zep, or alot of stuff by ac/dc and even a good bit of van halen (though he does have some interludes, even tho I do not count them as solos but alot of peeps do, just cause they are kinda hard). What makes good music is direction. There is something called the harmonic sequence. You break that and your music wil sound like crap, because it doesn't have a reinforced tone to it. If you use theory and don't jsut randomly through chords together then you will be find, but jsut playin random powerchords that sound cool is not a way to write music. Just look at cobaine's solos- they really really sucked. either they were the ever simple and super easy 3rd posistion (which all guitarists know- even that little kid with a tiny strat can play em) or they are not in a key at all. There was a reason that alot of punk uses so much distortion- to cover up mistakes and to make it sound good. When you go against the harmonic sequence, it will shound like crap. Like I says- I have nothin against blink 182 aside from the damage they ahve done to the guitar industry. And yes- you do not have to be jesus to be awsome at guitar. Just look at audio slave- not the best guitarist but he sounds great because 1. he has soul 2. he knows what he is doing and 3. he bases everything on theory and makes music, not randomly played crap.

Blink 182 were also bad musicians in that they played simple riffs, mostly power chords, simple bass progressions, and some, most,... well damn near all of the songs were sick, perverted, gross, distasteful pointless, hard to understand, and just plain stupid. So when listening to blink,*or not if you so choose* take from it what you wish, throw out the rest, feel free to think they are good, or bad, for whatever reasons you want, and stop BITCHING ABOUT IT. everyone has their own tastes. and no.. contrary to popular belief, a song doesnt have to be COMPLEX to be good,.. you dont necessarily have to be eddie van halen or eric clapton to play good music. you just have to play what you feel, play what you like. What is good to you, might not be good to someone else. after all. First of all, If all "Blink haters" have never listened to Zeppelin, Hendrix, AC/DC, or metal (cuz you seem to hate it so much) then what the *** do you think we listen to? Travis is a great drummer. Blink had good songwriting skill, but aside from Travis, lacked any real talent. I think they did alot towards sterring kids away from straight up pop in our time and should be recognized for at least getting them set on the path to discovering what rock really is.

As musically uninvolving as all those terrible punk and emo bands are, credit must be given where credit is due, and Blink-182's self-titled album was in my eyes a decent album. They grew up a little bit and actually figured out that music is about more than power chords and jackass-like lyrics. Granted, it wasn't exactly a masterpiece. It wasn't even good, but it was definitely better than the sell-out trash Good Charlotte calls music.
