X Factor: Janet Devlin Hits Back At Nirvana Claims

"X Factor" contestant Janet Devlin has responded to recent claims that she would cover a Nirvana track on the show.

As previously reported, the Hole singer tweeted Simon Cowell with the idea that the singer should cover one of her late husband's tracks on the show.

She posted: "@SimonCowell you want some Nirvana songs? @JanetJealousy is from same town as Kurt? I have the perfect idea for that, call me babe."

However the teenager has said she felt it inappropriate to perform a Nirvana cover after the band's fans slammed Courtney Love's decision.

"[To get a tweet from Courtney] was amazing," she told Digital Spy. "I am going to confess though, I would never sing a Nirvana song on this show. I wouldn't have wanted Kurt Cobain to be turning in his grave."

"You have to understand I respect him so much, so I wouldn't do that."

well played Janet Devlin, but i hate how some bands like Nirvana have found themselves in a sacred place where people are looked down for covering them. You should be allowed to cover any song that has had an impact on you, regardless of how well you perform it or how accurate it is to the original, without the fear of being lynched on the internet.

If Nirvana are a timeless act, or a classic or whatever. Remember that you and your pals that were here when Kurt was alive, wont be somewhere in the future. Nirvana or Kurts name will keep on living, thanks to people like this girl that werent born when he was alive, so...

I get what you're saying, could well be she's just siding with the general online consensus, but one of your points is extremely flawed- I'm 24, and although Jimi Hendrix and a large number of others died before I was born, I still know who they are and am a fan of their work. For all we know she is know different.

Very well said. When someone complains about a fan of a band not even being born when the band came out, it really just means their age is getting to them and they are ashamed.

People take X-Factor far too seriously. At the end of the day it's an entertainment show; a serial pantomime if you will. There's no need to get all wound up because someone's butchering one of favorite songs on it. Just laugh it off.

To be fair, yes I am a crotchety old bugger, but I'm a lover of the underdog & Nirvana being covered on the X-Factor terrifies me, as long as no-one makes a sugary pop song out of one of their songs I can maintain the image in my head that they're "my kind of band" (good but not well loved by everyone, a bit of a stretch of the imagination with Nirvana I know!). I don't like to think that the sort of person willing to climb on the SiCo bandwagon is the same person who would like the music I like!

That song is not about Kurt Cobain in any way, aside from the fact that he probably could relate to the same things.

When she says that she respects him to much to do that, its not becuase the band is so amazing that noone can cover them. She just understands how much Kurt hated the mainstream. And what better way to be mainstream then cover his song on X-Factor. People cover Nirvana songs all the time online, and they don't get harrassed, it's when people who are posers and cover smells like teen spirit on tv that upsets real Nirvana fans. I see your point, but thats not why people dont like Nirvana covers, its much bigger than that.

It's a common expression. She's saying it would disrespect his memory and he wouldn't approve of her covering the song on the show. Whether or not he actually has a grave to turn in or a corpse to turn with is irrelevant.
