ZZ Top guitarist and whiskered wonder of the world Billy Gibbons has compared his songwriting process to pornography. Perhaps that’s not a shock coming from the man who wrote "Pearl Necklace" and "Tush."
Gibbons told the Lehigh Valley Express-Times that identifying the key components when working on a new song isn’t easy. "It’s like Supreme Court Justice Stewart said about the definition of pornography, ‘I can’t describe it but I know it when I see it’."
He also said that the new ZZ Top record likely will be released in March or April of 2012. Recording has been completed on the album, produced by
Rick Rubin. Gibbons said it just needs to be "
mixed, mastered and named."
In other news, on October 11, ZZ Top is being honored with "A Tribute From Friends," a high-profile salute from fellow rockers, including Nickelback, Steven Tyler, Wolfmother, Daughtry, Filter and more.
The album features 11 classic ZZ Top songs interpreted by top-flight artists working in a broad range of musical genres. All of the album’s tracks have been newly recorded specifically for the project. These include Filter’s performance of "Gimme All Your Lovin’," Grace Potter & The Nocturnals’ take on "Tush," as well as Wyclef Jean’s "Rough Boy," "Legs" from Nickelback and Wolfmother’s interpretation of "Cheap Sunglasses."
