2013 Will Be the Biggest Year for Singles Sales in Chart History
The Official Charts Company in the UK is claiming that 2013 will become the biggest year for single sales in UK chart history, NME reports. The increase is largely due to the increasing dominance of the digital download market.

Last year, total single sales in the UK rose 6 per cent to 188.6 million. Digital sales accounted for 99.6 percent of that figure. This year, download sales of singles are already up 2.5 percent at the mid-year mark when compared with last year.

Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" is the biggest selling single of the year so far, selling over one million copies since it was released ten weeks ago. Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," which also features Pharrell Williams and Nile Rogers, is in second place. It has sold 828,000 copies in one month.

While it was once the case that the success of rock acts could be measured in album, rather than single sales, the album sales statistics for 2013 so far show a distinct lack of guitar based music. While names such as Emeli Sande, Bruno Mars and Michael Buble scored high in this chart, the biggest selling rock album of this year has been David Bowie's "The Next Day," which reached #13.
