Angry HMV Employee Hijacks Official Twitter Account

An HMV employee who was among 60 people to be fired yesterday took their anger to the brand's official Twitter account yesterday.

The layoffs were a result of the company going into administration in January. It is Britain's only national high street music retailer.

The disgruntled employee told the official HMV account's 66,000 followers:

"We're tweeting live from HR... over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution of loyal employees who love the brand." It later transpired the 190 people lost their jobs that day.

They continued: "Under normal circumstances we'd never dare do such a thing as this. However, when the company you dearly love is being ruined, and those hard-working individuals have mostly been forest, there seemed to be no other choice.

"Especially since these accounts were set up by an intern (unpaid, technically illegal) two years ago."

As the unofficial tweets began to spread across Twitter and among the music press, they added: "Just overheard our Marketing Director (he's staying, folks) ask 'How do I shut down Twitter?'"

One hour later, the tweets were deleted.

HMV's administrator, which is managing the company as it tries to wind down its debts, said of the layoffs (via Spinner):

"Although such decisions are always difficult, it is a necessary step in restructuring the business to enhance the prospects of securing its future as a going concern."
