Hydra Head To Live On
Metal fans were shocked at the closure of Hydra Head Records this year, but now founder Aaron Turner has opened a fundraiser so it can keep its legendary back catalogue available to future generations. Respected underground label Hydra Head, which recently announced its closure in September, will live on to support its back catalogue. Since 1993 it has released landmark albums from influential artists including Botch, Isis, Jesu and Melvins. In September, founder Aaron Turner announced the closure because of difficulty financing the label, blaming their "tendency towards releasing challenging (i.e. unmarketable) artists, and the steady decline of the music industry in general." In a new post, Turner says they won't be able to invest in new artists, but have decided to try and keep their back catalogue alive because of its musical significance. "In order to do this we're asking for help from anyone and everyone that would like to see the label continue and who is willing to support us in this effort," he writes. "This is not however a request for charity - we would like to offer something in exchange for whatever level of funding our potential benefactors (that is you), are willing to bestow upon us." To raise funds, the label is offering a range of products from stickers and t-shirts to rare vinyl pressings. The money raised will fund future album pressings, pay the artists and staff, downsize the offices to a manageable level and produce new treats for longterm fans. You can browse the items available on the Hydra Head site. Before thanking fans for their continued support, Aaron added: "While we're well aware that much of this music can and will be obtained in digital format for free from various internet sources, we firmly believe that these musical documents are best experienced in their original intended forms, and that as physical artifacts lend a greater depth of experience to the listeners as well as the creators." Are you pleased to see Hydra Head live on, or are you yet to explore its impressive back catalogue? Listen to their releases on Band Camp to see what you think, and let us know in the comments.
