NAMM. Dean Guitars: 2008 Line Features Impressive Metal Artist Roster

artist: namm date: 01/28/2008 category: industry news

Something became increasingly obvious after scanning the aisles at this year’s NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) convention: Dean Guitars is doing much more than just holding its own among the numerous guitar companies out there. After 30 years in the business, it’s giving big boys like Fender and Gibson a run for their money. Dean has proven it occupies a very unique niche in the music industry, and its 2008 line should likely make it the go-to company for the metal world.

Dean’s guitars have come to epitomize metal, a fact that has been bolstered by the Dimebag Darrell model line that has continued to grow (both in quantity and popularity) over the years. Although the sharp lines, intricate graphics, and vibrant tones of Dean’s models were likely what lured many musicians to first pick them up, Director of Dean’s Artist Relations Josh Maloney says there is another reason to explain the impressive artist roster. Basically, it’s good old fashioned customer service. “Everyone in the company - from our CEO to the guy who works on shipping - has played in bands, has toured or are touring,Maloney said. “Everyone is a musician. We’ve been there, we’ve done it, and we know what it’s about.

Maloney revealed that the company was particularly excited to release one particular 2008 model (photo), which commemorates the 10,000th Razorback that Dean has shipped worldwide. “That’s a pretty significant achievement for any guitar company, and we knew we wanted to do a model to earmark that,Maloney said. The metallic silver Razorback 10,000 Commemorative features a diamond-plate top with a Dimetime pickup in the bridge, and it was easily one of the most eye-catching new models on display at NAMM. The Dime-themed pickup also represents another big event for the company this year. “We’re actually winding pickups now at Dean guitars. We launched 14 pickups, 6 of which are artist models. We’re coming out of the gate really strong. If they’re willing to attach their name to it, you know it’s good.

Speaking of Dime, keep on the lookout for the new Cemetery Gates model (photo). As the title suggests, the Razorback features a cemetery-themed graphic finish, but hidden within that same picture is an image of Dimebag. The guitar features the Dimebucker pickup, a mahogany neck/top/body, and Dime Razor inlay. Lefties who also happen to be Dime fans should be pretty thrilled to learn that a new Razorback Explosion Lefty is part of the 2008 Dean collection.

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine (photo), a relatively new artist on the official Dean roster, was on hand at NAMM to introduce 4 new models, including a USA Dave Mustaine Double Neck with mahogany body, ebony fingerboard, Grover tuners, and specifications selected by the Megadeth frontman himself. Check out the VMNT “Angel Of Deth” and VMNTX for some other Megadeth-inspired options. Other new artists to offer up their own Dean models this year are UFO’s Vinnie Moore (USA Vinnie Moore Signature “Vinman2000”) and Trivium’s Matt Heafy (Dean MKH).

For all of us out there who are on a limited budget and can’t afford the 2008 custom models, Dean guru Maloney suggested a few other options. “We have a model called the Soltero, which is a single cut-away, maple top, mahogany guitar. We also have an import line from Korea that can be had for $500. They’re astonishing, quite frankly. For the money you can’t beat it.” (photo)

Overpriced guitars aimed at kids who want the most extreme looking guitar they can buy. Not many Deans I'd consider purchasing, and honestly the fact that they're still making more and more Dime-related products 3 years since his death (which was the marketing opportunity) is rather annoying.

I like my Dean bass, but I'm not a fan of the guitars. I don't dig on the super set up shreddy thing they go for, and I feel like they get really thin tone a lot of the time. Also, the title here is an exaggeration, Ibanez really is the go-to metal guitar still.

I do agree with PierreNightmare, the RC-7 is quite sick, but if I'm getting a 7 string with EMG 707s in it, I'll wait for Schecter to put out the Loomis signature or just a C-7 Hellraiser with an FR.

i think dime would love it... he loved dean guitars he is probbly jammin with one upstares now... plus most of them are what he designed himself and im shure that evryone who knew him best would agree that he would be stoked over the fact that people still want to see more, the extreme kids part... well dean have made there own style and it looks good they have sucseded in creating guitars that people would gladley **** if they could witch is cool as shit, over priced... meh i can agree on that one, but then again most guitars are like cars there is a huge profit for the retailer

not true, my vendetta is quite a distinguished looking carved top strat style. Also the best guitar I own and I bought it for a steal! Great axe, perfect neck, light weight body but still a thick sound! Granted the stock pickups had to go.

And why are they giving a Mustaine guitar a nickname that should definately be on a Kerry King guitar?

These axes are ****in' killer! (I plan on buying one) I'll just have to keep playing my Jackson until I can. And to answer the Mustaine signature model questions: When he played with Metallica, he had a BC Rich Bich. Then during the early and later Megadeth years, he used various Jackson King Vs. During recent years, he had a brief endorsment from ESP, using Axxion models. He switched to Dean in 05' or 06' using VMNTs. Hope that clears things up a bit.

Anyone who buys a "Dime" guitar with a single pickup and no temelo bar needs to be shot.

I don't mind dean making Razorbacks anymore than I mind Jackson building a company around the Rhoads model, but ANY guitar with Dime's name on it should be a QUALITY instrument. I can't stand how there are all these budget "Dime" models that Darrell wouldn't even play. It's bad enough that he never even PLAYED the razorback, but Dean is really milking his name, creating a brand around it.

Gibsons, ESPs, Fenders, PRSs, etc. etc. - they are ALL overpriced. You can't single out one guitar company and say "These are overpriced blahblahblah" because every major company is!

Also, I dont hear you saying anything about Jackson still making products with Randy Rhoad's name on it 25 years after his death, Gibson making products with Jimi Hendrix' name on it nearly 40 years after his death... need I continue?

Dean's are awesome guitars and the '08 lineup is looking pretty impressive!

Well, the reason there's complaint is because the production of the guitars in his honor is excessive, it seems like atleast half of their guitars and pickups are "Dimebag" related, whereas Jackson has maybe 3 Randy Rhoads models, and they aren't covered in his face/signature, either, it makes it hard to buy a Dean guitar without being a fan of Dimebag if you don't want his face on it.

And as for me, Dean's lower end guitars aren't bad, but the only ones I'm interested in are the Splitails, which, unfortunatly, are $4,000, which is also excessive, they need to make lower cost models of some of their more expensive guitars.

Quit being selfish dicks and give Dime a little respect. So what if they make Dime models for cheap, do you thing a kid jammin' metal wants a First Act? No! So when they see a Dime Dean for $200, they go holy shit, I'm starting playin' on Dean that has Dime on it. In otherwords, it inspires them to practice and play hard. And when they get better, they move up to a Ibanez, Jackson, ESP or stay with Dean. So don't be a **** and run your mouth about Dean.

But Randy released 4 cds in total (2 with quiet and 2 with Ozzy) and Jimi released 3 with his band. Dimebag however, released 11 albums with 3 different bands which is more than Randy and Jimi combined. Also, there are only like 2 Razorbacks with Dime's face on it. The rest are lower-end ML shapes aimed at the new players that love Dime (much like the cheap B.C Rich guitars). I have to admit however, that the USA Deans are overpriced.

I have a 2004 catalog of Dean (prior to Dime's passing), and there is NOT one Dimebag Signature Guitar listed on that. They're are just MLs. Now they basically live of Dime's name. Theres atleast 15 Dimebag signature guitar. All the same thing with different body art. Pathetic.

And for the "Metal Guitar" aspect of things, Ibanez' are way ahead of Deans. Any RG prestige would piss on Razorbacks any time of the day. Forget JEM or JS. And I HATE Ibanez' (exp. JS n' JEM).

I kinda like Deans. i dont like Razorbacks however, just too much flash for a guitar, and IMO, they are pretty overpriced. I do like those SplitTails however, and if they make a cheaper version (American ones are maybe $3k), id love it. And why are they giving a Mustaine guitar a nickname that should definately be on a Kerry King guitar?

i thought the same thing, add an a it's total slayer and kerry fricken hates dave hahah

anyway, yes deans are flashy and they want them to be that way, i like them and want to play them, it's still one of my long term goals to get a razorback V

the only problem w/ deans is that they never use a damn original floyd, IT'S NOT THAT DAMN EXPENSIVE TO PUT A REAL ONE ON!

I'm a bass player so I'm hopeing that the new dean basses are going to be much better. Yeah deans look pretty sick but in my opinion there previous bass models are seriously lacking in playability, the necks were HUGE, and i had trouble playing em, so hopefully the new year brings better guitars and basses

Why don't you punks go play your guitars or something?. If you don't want a Dean, then don't buy one! Go buy some space age sounding JSX2000-11b Model X from Ibanez or something, if you are into robot guitar names. Perhaps guy buy some Fender that feels like a piece of furniture in your hands. I dunno! Just go play something.

Yeah, they need to stop using Dimebag to sell more guitars, every time i open a guitar magazine i see an ad for a dean dimebag razorback somewhere in it. they'd all be half the price if they didn't say dimebag on them
