'Rock Band 3' To Be Released This Winter

artist: rock band date: 03/10/2010 category: industry news
rating: 0 / votes: 0

Rock Band 3 is set to be released this winter, the video game's makers have confirmed.

A message on the official Facebook page for the game explained that developers Harmonix were working on the next installment of the music simulation game, claiming they were set to "revolutionise" the music game genre.

"Harmonix is developing Rock Band 3 for worldwide release this holiday season!" the message read.

"The game, which will be published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts, will innovate and revolutionise the music genre once again, just as Harmonix did with the original Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band. Stay tuned for more details!"

Further information on the game is yet to be released, including what new artists and tracks will feature.

Rock Band 2 was released in 2008, while The Beatles: Rock Band, which was endorsed by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono, was released in September last year.

Thanks for the report to Nme.com.

Which is GOOD, in my honest opinion. Sure, it's a cool party game. But the *******s that are all like, "I can play 'Through The Fire And Flames' on Expert with 90% makes me a guitar god." that ruined it for me.

Now I only play it wasted, which is coincidentally more fun.

It's a good way to fool yourself, but other then that it's just another game. Unless... they make the guitar with six strings.... 21-24 frets... and a cord that plugs into an amp.

Well yeah, its a game, for people who like to play games. I played Guitar Hero/Rock Band and it actually made me want to play real guitar, which i do. Funny you mention that guitar controler though because they actaully are making a real guitar looking controller that will work with the game and plug into an amp and work.

I am hoping they just kick the drums up a notch I couldnt give a damn about playing the guitar or bass its not even close to a realistic simulation at all for GH or any rockband the drums is where its at so are we going to see an actual High hat and some good unbreakable cymbals?.....Main reason I am wanting the drums to be kick ass is that it makes a cheap electronic drumset with the right software on your computer so instead of spending 1400$ I might spend the 300 but its all based on the drums lets hope they dont disapoint...

I don't know how much more can you "revolutionize" the game without making it less fun... But we'll see. Mking expansions with more songs or carrying on with weekly DLC seems the best solution as now pretty much everyone who likes these games has a set of plastic peripherals...

i reckon all they have to do, is to make it instead of scrolling top down, do it right to left, have 5 frets as they do now, but have 6 buttons per fret, as to make it 6 stings... sure, still missing about 19 odd frets, but its closer to a real guitar than what there is now...

You speak in absolutes which makes your post retarded. Not ALL Rock Band/Guitar Hero haters are snobs...some are sick of the snobby people who play the game and realistically parallel to the real thing (see my last post).

Not to mention the fact that I find it somewhat disturbing that someone has to play a game to find inspiration, be it guitar related, or otherwise.

A cheap Dream Theater/Mastodon knock-off...?

Excuse me while I kill you...Between The Buried And Me was formed a year after Mastodon was. Also, they took PARTS of John Petrucci's style and incorporated elements of death metal to create a unique sound. In addition, Between The Buried And Me actually has a good singer (though he screams most of the time). Drums are comparable. Bass is comparable. But don't sit there and write them off as a knock-off just because SOME of their style is influenced by Dream Theater.

For the record, I'm a BIG Dream Theater fan but an even bigger BTBAM fan.

Guess I got to defend my stance here:

I'm not speaking in absolutes, I'm just addressing the snobs in question (and judging by your response, you're probably one of them). The only reason you and many others are hating on the game are because of a few jerks. In my post I indicated that not all people who play the game are jerks so you're speaking in absolutes as much as I am. Even if I was speaking in absolutes, I've seen nothing to indicate that I am wrong, your post included.

And what the hell is so wrong with finding inspiration from a game? A true artist wouldn't be so closed minded as to deny inspiration, regardless of what medium it comes from.

What your all missing, well most of you, is that not everybody is interested in playing an instrument, not everyones got the time needed tovlearn to play an instrument.. In the same way that not everybody wants to be a racing driver, but its still fun to simulate being one by playing need for speed..

These games are a great way to simulate the joy of playing music, even it is ridicously far away from the real thing..

Plus how can it ever in a million years be a bad thing that kids are exposed to rock music in stead of all the lady gaga and lil wayne crap you find on most radio networks?

Sure its annoying that some kids thing they are guitar gods for playing through TTFATF on expert.. But if theyre having fun with it, who cares? You shouldn't.. Live your own life and stop worrying og get annoyed by how other people live their..

go ahead and ruin all the fun you could have just because you think something else is better and you wanna ruin it for everyone else too, its not like the makers of Rock Band and Guitar Hero inconvenienced us in any way, shape or form, and regardless, theyll never stop making these games because this is how music oughtta be, FUN, and INTERACTIVE!!!!

if you (let me quote someone up there) "snobs" cant see that, then just do NOT play it, dont even think about it, and dont try to force your snotty attitudes on the people that have fun while you sit there with your head in your hole, constantly comparing things because "other" people do it

They have the ingredients for some pretty decent music and muck it up by adding metalcore elements to it. and I didnt say cheap, I said bad. Bad is in, its not that good, but they get away with it anyway. I like BTBAM myself, I havent bought a single album or remember a single song by them, but when I saw them at Brixton, they blew away every band before the rest came on, and only until LoG went on stage did they get beaten.

Frankly, I'm looking forward to this. Does anyone know when Harmonix will announce the setlist?

Maybe at E3. Thats usually when they announce them.

I've never once had a conversation with anyone who thinks they can play guitar based on rockband/guitar hero its a puzzle game really when it comes down to it at least that's how I look at it.

Anybody else solely want a drum hero?

With a decent controller, it could actually teach people how to play the instrument realistically. I mean COME ON

I'm cool with this. I already have the stuff from RBII, so it's no different than going to the store and buying the new Call of Duty or Halo.

It's just the newest in the series. Revolutionary? No but it'll be fun to play, people need to stop bitching

Just to put my opinion in, in response to what most people have already said:
I have no problem with people who play these games for fun. Sometimes at longer band rehearsals, if we start to lose steam, we just unwind with a quick setlist on Rock Band so the singer can get a rest, and the keyboard player can pretend he can sing.
My problem is people who play the games and genuinely think they can play the instrument. Also, I get annoyed after about fifty people in a row request "Crazy Train" because they saw it on guitar hero. There's nothing wrong with people learning new bands through games, but if you never listen to more than the single and consider yourself a fan, that's just really f***ing annoying.

Also, though it'll probably never happen, I'd love to see Abney Park playable on one of these games. Just sayin'.

Luckily, I'm inside on this and I know exactly what the new twist for this edition is. It makes it ultra-realistic and takes more skill this time around:

It's a tab book!!!

That would be great.

It's depressing to have a label come and tell you that ['Guitar Hero'] is how kids are learning about music and experiencing music," White said. He added that although he doesn't try to dictate "which format people should get their music in…if you have to be in a video game to get in front of them, that's a little sad."

Page added that he can't imagine that people are really learning anything significant about playing instruments by playing video games.

"You think of the drum part that John Bonahm did on Led Zeppelin's first track on the first album, 'Good Times Bad Times'," he said. "How many drummers in the world can play that part, let alone on Christmas morning?"
-Jimmy Page and Jack White
Keep dreaming.

catempire wrote on 03/10/2010 - 10:13 pm / quote |
Why is it sad? Is it better for them to get into it through MTV music videos? Or by just sitting listening to the latest radio trends?
These games give young people a sense of music history they would never otherwise have and at least get them to engage with the music itself - there's no music videos, no pretty singer, all songs look the same. By "playing" each instrument they can appreciate what is involved in each part and what exactly is happening in the song. I think Jack and Jimmy are great, but also wrong on this one.

ledzep#1 wrote on 03/10/2010 - 10:30 pm / quote |
I think Jimmy Page is saying that he doesn't want the music sort of "dumbed down" to a level where the drums can be played with 4 different things to hit. He wants people to appreciate the music for its intricacies and original innovation, not the innovation created through a game.

That being said, I don't have a problem with these games, I played them before I picked up a real guitar. Now I just can't play them because I find it boring when compared to the real thing. I think its good that people who dont have time to learn a real instrument can still get involved in music in some way. My only problem is that much of the time the songs featured on rock band and guitar hero are the typical stereotyped rock sound of the 70's and 80's. I'd like to see more innovators represented, along with some of the older blues guys who were the inspiration for rock in the first place.

i agree completely it takes all the integrity out of learning an actual instrument.. those accomplishments of being able to do a good guitar solo or drum part like bonzos are belittled by merely tapping buttons or hitting drum pads..

ledzep#1 wrote on 03/10/2010 - 10:49 pm / quote |
as for White, its easy to see why he would say that...hes influenced by the old blues music, same as Page. In his point of view, its better to pick up some good blues music and get inspiration from that...u cant argue whether hes right or not, thats a matter of opinion, but hes done pretty well for himself. Just check out youtube vids starting with "death letter blackpool lights" and follow the related vids from that concert, as well as some others. Theres some great covers of songs that most people have probly never heard of.

I derive absolutism from statements such as these: "Anyone who hates these games do so at of pigheadedness and snobbery, nothing else." and "I've seen nothing to indicate that I am wrong, your post included." I've said nothing about anyone and everyone, nor credited my response, just listing the possible reasons that some people hate the game, and I know that some people don't despite my opinion.

Yes. I hate the game because of a few jerks who ruin it for everyone else. I also hate the game for beating a dead horse into the ground by doing the same thing to different songs, for profit. (The "for profit" is an arguable stance, but it's a factor that seems to drive the production of this game.)

I realize that not all people who play the game are retarded. I realize that some people play the game for a hellacious hang-out game and party medium. Does that make the game worth playing? Absolutely. Does it still sicken me that people who use this as an excuse to parallel them to real-life superstar guitar standing after accomplishing a high score on a hard song? Yes.

By the way, what constitutes "true art" is an opinion, so I'll leave it at we agree to disagree on that topic.

It's quite unintelligent to hate this game because of that select group of idiots who bastardize the entire point of it. However, I have yet to meet anyone who thinks they can play guitar because of these games, and I also hate when people tell you to pick up the real instrument. They are two completely different things. They are universally accepted as two completely different things, and are in completely different categories, one simply being a fun, music based diversion, good for hanging out, getting into a song, and/or a party. The other, a hobby, a talent, something which takes skill, not that the games don't, but much practice, and gains much more respect. And honestly, I'll admit to using the game to figure out the rhythm for certain guitar and bass parts, if I can't quite get it done.

Actually, I am quite certain Harmonix has stated that Pantera songs will be available to download to Rock Band in the near future (not a standalone thing). I too would like Gojira in one of these games. Machine Head would be cool too, but what I really want is Dream Theater.

The way I look at it is that GH/RB is nothing but a game, A small pastime I might do every once in a while, but the real guitar is something completely different. It's like my life. Anyway, GH and RB are great games, but they are nothing more than games. Now, would I rather have a real Gibson Les Paul, or a fake plastic one? That's the question. And I hope that everyone's answer is.....
Both.

Stuart90 wrote on 03/11/2010 - 02:28 am / quote |
Well those of you saying its just a piece of plastic kind of things, then there's a game called Power Gig where you play with a real guitar coming out soon. It has the colours sticked on top of fret board but as strings also it will have a chord mode where you play chords and not just one string. It is meant to learn you guitar whilst you play, also you can plug it into a amplifier but I'm guessing it will sound terrible for something that will cost Ј90 odd.

Rock Band: Muse.

They have to invent a keytar for the game. Also, the singer must either play the guitar or the keytar at the same time. I'd buy it and play the hell out of it.

I use rockband instruments solely used as a warm up to get my hands ready for any sort of practice/jam or gig. I think its just a fun thing to do when you're bored out your tree. I use it to keep myself in time with the songs I usually play on the real guitar. I don't see why it's got such a big following with stuff like "oh I'm good on guitar cause I can play GH". I just see it as a warmup exercise or if you haven't heard the song properly on the game before that someone might want you to learn. End of the day, it's just a game and thats how Harmonix make money from it. I'd be laughing if I had their bank balance considering how many people love it, and how many people hate it for that matter.

i think it would b awesum if they would make it to where ur avatar thing on the game would b able to play more than one instrument at a time. like sing and play another instrument or say like on the 30 seconds to mars song attack the bassist starts out playing synth and then picks up his bass and starts playing. and it should b more than 4 players. u should b able to hav as many ppl on a thing at once as u want. i mean 4 guys playn drums at the same time would b stupid but lets say u want to hav 3 guitars a drummer a bass 2 singers and a synth at the same time u should b able to. thatd b so awesum and if u could take a camera and take a picture of yourself and use it for the game thatd b rly cool. guitar hero 5 f***** itself ovr but i like its controller better. i think that guitar hero is a lil faster paced and the buttons dont stick. but if they definately had it to where u could plug n a real guitar and a foot pedal and write ur own songs with it thatd b cool. guitar hero's song editor sucked.

How many of you guitarists, commenting here, have written a song that hundreds of people are learning to sing? I've got two songs in Rock Band right now: not big sellers, because I'm not well known, but the people who DID download my songs for rock band are going to remember them. They're learning the lyrics well enough to sing them note perfect. They're learning the changes in the songs well enough to play the charts perfectly.

And that's worthwhile, I think. That's a sight better than someone downloading an mp3 and losing it forever on their hard drive. Don't you think?
