Amy Lee: 'Velvet Revolver's Music Isn't That Great'

Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee recently spoke to Kerrang! magazine about her band's massive success and the possibility of a solo career at some point down the line. Several excerpts from the interview, according to Blabbermouth.net, follow:

Kerrang!: Have you become cynical about your peers?

Amy Lee: No way, but theres just so many new bands out there and I'm not motivated to see a single damn one, and a lot of the bands worth listening to are old and tired now. Velvet Revolver...I haven't seen them play live yet but that album really bores me! Maybe there's one song that's cool, but to me it's just not worth building a supergroup around.

They've got Slash in it.

Yeah, but great celebrities don't make a great band. I don't hate them, but the music just isn't that great.

Has the industry changed?

Definitely. Theres been a lull in the rock industry and the labels are pouring all their money in to rap and hip-hop. At the American VMA's [MTV Video Music Awards] we felt really disrespected and looked over and ignored. You invite us to an award show because youve nominated us and you don't even want to interview me because you're too busy with Beyonce and Usher? It's like, 'Why did i go to the trouble?' We were 20 rows in the back!

Is that just a sign of the times?

Maybe, but it'll come back around. Every kind of music always has its day, and right now it's rap and hip-hop and that's great. But that's just not what I'm into and obviously it's not my band's scene. I'm just glad the new album hasn't come out this year.

How is it writing without Evanescence's co-founder [Ben Moody]?

I definitely feel like I have something to prove, so there's pressure. Thats okay, though, because I know the truth: that it isn't the case that Ben was the brains behind the operation who let me be the singer. Some people think that and it bothers me, but there's nothing I can say to change people's minds so I'll let the album do that.

Are your current bandmates equally expendable?

It's the opposite. The people in the band came in after the majority of the work on the first album was done, but when Ben left, we had a meeting and we all agreed they should be a part of it ? not just session players. That's made it really exciting, because this is a real opportunity for them to make it their own. You love your band so much more when it's your music.

In related Evanescence news, the band is the latest performer added to the lineup of next week's Billboard Music Awards. The Dec. 8 event will air live on Fox from Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Just think, if Velvet Revoilver had released contraband 20 years ago, would it have stood out at all? I was at Best Buy last night, and a Velvet Revolver song came on, and they announced, "Velvet Revolver covered this song for the new generation." It was a cover of that Surrender song, I don't know the name of the band. What sucks, is they can play that, but Less Than Jake did a cover of that song, and it sounds so much better. VR's cover is still insanely slow, and there's nothing different, the Less Than Jake cover is more upbeat and it's a song you can get into. It made me laugh, Less Than Jake had already done a cover of that song about a year and a half ago, but then Velvet Revolver does it, and they do it "for the next generation."

Sadly, she is right. VR album isn't that great. "Fall to pieces" is the only decent song on there. i just wanna say i agree with Ishagu. Evanescence is an OKAY band. And furthermore, you guys they ARE NOT goth. A goth band is like Wumpscut or The Kidney Thieves. Evanescence is like.. nu metal. ..First off, I hate Amy Lee as much as anyone. She
cannot sing and has no lyrical ability outside of
gimmicky rhymes and monotonous prose and I consider
that a defenseless accusation. Her voice is not
noteworthy at all (unintended pun) and there are so
many other female vocalists that are light years

of hearing the Lacuna Coil side of why Evanescence

quite frankly, VR isn't quite the band that people expected but you got to respect that they had to rush the album out or people would lose interest in them. They're a great band producing good rock tunes but its too generic and done before. I guess Slash probably meant to do it this way because that's pretty much what he did for Snakepit, reincarnate the old and bring it to the new generation.

On the other hand, Evanesence is pretty much a corporately pumped out band. They're lyrics, chord progression and technique is all cleverly planned out so it's catchy and gets the attention of the mass. I respect that but Amy Lee shouldn't be saying things that are pointless and too debatable. Her bragging that she was invited to the awards and her wanting to get attention proves she only wants fame.

I'll admit, I was expecting a lot more from Velvet Revolver but their album is still easily one of the best I've heard in a long while, it's good, guitar-driven rock and that's something that I've really, really missed in recent years. They excel live and they are, as Amy says, a new band, despite the members having been in the business for so long and thus, I?m treating them as one and I?m looking forward to seeing their evolution as a rock band.

Amy, however, has proven herself to be arrogant and egotistical prior to her criticism of Velvet Revolver and I don't like her as a person at all. Her voice is good though, there?s no denying that, but her band is mediocre and her whiney, depressing lyrics are shallow and dreary.
