Judas Priest Guitarist Talks On New Album

artist: judas priest date: 04/02/2007 category: interviews
rating: 0 / votes: 0

Chad Bowar of About Heavy Metal recently conducted an interview with Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

  • About Heavy Metal: How is "Nostradamus" coming along?

K.K. Downing: We are working on it day and night. It's going really, really well. It's a long project in terms of the length of music. It's over an hour and a half of music, so for that reason alone it is going to take us a bit longer to pull it together. But hopefully we can offer something unique and wonderful to the world. We're totally into it. We promise the fans we'll get it to them as soon as we possibly can. We'll get a Priest tour together as well.

  • Are you and Glenn (Tipton) doing the production on the album?

So far that is the way it seems. We've been working hard, pretty much nonstop. That's not to say at some point we might bring someone else in, but we'll see what we need. If we think we need to, we'll certainly do that. But I think between Glenn and I we've got an awful lot of experience. It's sounding really good. It's the closest guarded secret in rock and roll at the moment. It's a bit different than the work we've done previously. We're looking forward to exposing it as soon as we can.

  • Obviously writing lyrics is different on a concept album, but is writing the music any different from a regular album?

I think there are a lot of the usual ingredients, but with a bigger spectrum of sound with a bit of a classical element and more orchestrated sounds, which can be extremely heavy if used right. Hopefully it's going to be pleasing to a lot of people, and that's what it's always been about. We've always tried to widen the audience of rock and metal and make it more credible to more people, and hopefully we'll achieve that goal with this project.

  • 30 plus years into your career is it easier or harder to write songs?

I think the sponge is always being squeezed harder. When will we run out before we are just duplicating what someone else has done? The answer to that is in the combination of what people have to offer in the band. Five individuals when we come together creates something unique. When we will run out of ideas is a very good question. Hopefully not until this record is done! (laughs)

  • What do you think are some of the most underrated Judas Priest albums?

I think they are all underrated. I think everyone who's never bought a Priest album should go out and buy one, and follow that up by buying every other one as well! It's fair to say that even with as long and successful of a career that Priest has had, we still have a long ways to go to be comparable with a lot of bands that have gotten a much bigger audience, whether it's Queen or Guns N' Roses or Metallica or AC/DC. We are not considered underground by any means, but Priest is still climbing the ladder in a lot of respects. For that reason I think we're still doing it. We're still hungry. It would have been great to have been a Led Zeppelin, where your first album is bigger than sliced bread. The good thing about Priest is that we've always been building and hopefully getting better. But then again, we're not over and done with yet, while a lot of those other bands are.

  • What are some of the biggest changes you've seen in the music industry over the years?

I heard an interview with Robert Plant on a radio station not too far from me, and he reminded me of something. When we first started to write music, every time we composed something we had to play it a million times so we wouldn't forget it because we weren't able to record it. That may sound weird, but it's true. We would sit there in a room and play song ideas over and over again. And then the next day we would have to remember them, because we didn't have the facilities to record the ideas. That was true in the very early days. Then we got a little cassette recording machine with a little microphone, and then we were able to record it. In addition to the technology changes and the internet, there have also been musical changes. I've been around long enough to witness the evolution of rock music and metal music from the '60s all the way to the present time. I've seen lots of waves of different trends. In metal the big change was from the end of the '80s early '90s when it was classic or pure metal changing to the newer metal. Whether it changes back remains to be seen. The good news is that a lot of the great veterans are still around, like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc. We're still hoping for a massive revival of the brilliant '70s and '80s. That would be pretty cool.

nice, i feel sorry for priest, such an awesome ****ing band but always in the shadows of bands like black sabbath and iron maiden in the popularity stakes. out of all the albums theyve ever released theres only 2 that i havent liked, point of entry and turbo. all the rest are great if not superb, with superb being the likes of sad wings of destiny, british steel and painkiller. stained class and defenders of the faith are borderline as well.

Priest gets shafted for popularity in the metal community, but in terms of general popularity Priest gets waaaaayyyyy more attention than Iron Maiden.

Priest is Ok,better than Maiden in my opinion,I love the music of Maiden but it is always just a matter of time before Bruce comes in wailing about a unicorn in a magical forest or some other D&D like corny lyrics.

Priest gets the exact amount of attention and praise they deserve. It says a lot that they're still putting out records 30 years later

i dont know...i think that maiden is good, but i think that priest is a little better than them. Priest has put out many many great albums over the years, as well as megadeth, but megadeth, with mustaine originally with metallica, always put a shadow on the band, and an expectation that i dont think that they have always met. Priest has met their reputation. although, you cant take away from either band..they have both lasted this long, you know?

priest and megadeth(even though they came out of nowhere in this conversation) are awsome but maiden is only about a billion times better than any other band that will ever walk the earth...ever!

The only band I feel has shadowed Priest is Maiden.. because if you look at Metallica back then, they shadowed every band. Hell, they almost shadowed the world

I think it depends on what priest we are talking about, Priest had many stages and some of there albums were mind blowing....Others were cock blowing. If your talking about the mid 80's priest {Point Of Entry, ect.} Then any of the other bands mentioned so far are WAY better then that shit. But then there are the really early and really new priest albums. {Sad Wings Of Destiny, Screaming For Vengance, British Steel,PainKiller, Angel Of Retrabution, ect.} If we are talking about those albums....Then those are better then anything Maiden, Metallica, Or any other of those other bands ever did.

But then again, Im only 16 and wasnt even alive during 98% of there carrer...Im guessing you guys were alive through all that....So you would probibly know better.

In my opinion Maiden is better than preist. Not by much but Maiden was so intrumentally ahead of there time. A ton of metal bands nowadays have riffs that sound like it could be on an Maiden album. And Steve Harris is one hell of a bassist.

I think its great that Priest are making good progress with the new album. I wasn't sure of AoR when it came out, but now its an album i can't stop listening to. As long as its orignal Priest, and not any of the gerneal metal crap that has come out so far (St.Anger for instance) then I'm sold.

As for being overshadowed by more popular bands, its up to the public to decide how successful they are. ACDC isn't a very good comparison music wise, more people are into rock and pop nowadays and metal has a more negative view in my opinion. Bands like Metallica etc give credit to Priest for being an inspiration.

I don't think they're unpopular in any way, I see a few people wearing Priest shirts in my school, and I think there was something about pop stars like Justin Timberlake wearing Priest shirts awhile back or something. A lot of people know about Priest and listen to them, just as long as they keep making good albums, they'll remain popular.

A bunch of the metalheads at my school are trying to do a "Thrash metal revival". What we're trying to do is make metal the biggest musical export of the rock genre in the US, and trying to make Extreme metal (mostly Thrash) the leading sub-genres

From what i hear there is a lot of people who compare Maiden and Priest and who could blame you they came out around the same time, both have amazing dual guitarists and have unique vocalists but to me it's like Megadeth vs. Metallica, you can't decide because they are alike in many respects but also so different.

I liked Judas Priest because the first album i got from them, Screaming for Vengeance, was so straight forward with everything, i mean you start the album with a nice intro song, the hellion, and then kick it to Electric Eye which is possibly my favorite Priest song and the rest of the album just screams at you.

Iron Maiden in my opinion had a more epic feel to them, they weren't as straight forward but they made great songs, The number of the Beast built into the song, Run to the Hills built up (kinda). So there is really no comparison i now love them both and wish to see them live.

Anyways, i look forward to the new priest album. You guys haven't let me down yet (although i don't have all their albums i hope to).

Metal Meltdown off of Painkiller is absolute ecstacy. Priest is definitely a great band. their last album totally suprised me, i didn't think guys that old could rock that hard, but they showed me wrong.

Ok Judas Priest is much better then maiden in my opinion, the only time maiden comes close to judas was when paul dianno was their singer, their first two albums are awesome. As long as this new priest album doesn't have songs like turbo lover on it, then it should be good

Yeah, but him and Brian May were the best gay guys out there. They are alright for a bunch of homo's if you ask me. And that doesn't change the music at all either.
And what's your point? Dio is a midget (According to Sharon Osbourne) but he's a good singer too.

DoD and AMOLAD haven't been that brilliant but they are good maiden albums. Brave new world was great, its one of my favourite albums. And I must agree, Bruce Dickinson's last three have been truly excellent.

Can't wait for this new record. Its one of the albums I'm looking forward to this year (hopefully it ships in that time). I hope they do something big and progressive sounding. That would kick ass with Halford singing over it. But not like Lochness on their last album, it was a bit too long (and pretty silly).

Sorry I didn't mean to say Brian May, I meean to say Freddie Mercury, at least I was close, i got another queen member though.

Also I would like to than UG once again for banning my account and forcing me to get a new one. This has got to be about the 10th time in the last year or so, and this time they ban me for defending Rob Halford and his sexual preferences. I know this is a private site but we need more democracy in this world, not anarchy...or something like that.

From my time as a member of the UG community, I have learned that saying the word "gay" gets you banned, I've been banned so many times for making "gay" coldplay jokes. It's all just fun and games if you ask me. Heck if I went out with UG, they probably wouldn't even have the common courtisy to give a reach around, now that is pathetic!!!

Yeah. Painkiller, Steel,Sad Wings, Stained Class, Defenders. I never really liked Turbo or Point of Entry. And you also forgot Screaming for Vengeance. Anyways, I don't have all their albums, I've just listened to some selected songs from those albums. Anyways, with all do respect, I hope that this album is good. I mean, most recent Judas Priest albums other than Angel of Retribution have, I dunno, sucked. I of course refer to Demolition, which was the second album with Tim Owens, which had some very very bad songs. Now Jugulator, 1997 was actually okay, in my view. Jugulator, Dead Meat, Burn in Hell, Cathedral Spires, Decapitate, Blood Stained. However those were the only ones out of 10 songs.
My point is I'm excited to have Rob Halford back from the dark period of 2wo, War of Worlds and Halford, and I can't wait for Nostrodamus at all.

Their live show will rock your socks off and will leave you basking in the light of Metal Heaven...needless to say, Priest is the Godfather of Metal and they paved the roads for Metal to make it's mark! Long hail the Priest!!! P.S. Best Album : Screaming for Vengeance, why? because it is a non stop selection of songs that from start to end, keep me singing, playing and bangin!! Almost 30 years later, and I still get chills listening to this album...I can't think of another that does this, cept The Wall. Anyway Rock Hard Ride Free!!
