Megadeth Mainman Dave Mustaine: 'This Is A New Chapter' |
| artist: megadeth |

category: interviews |

Headbanger's Blog recently conducted an interview with Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine. An except from the chat follows:
Headbanger's Blog: When did you start seeing signs that Glen Drover [former Megadeth guitarist] might not be happy with what he was doing in the band?
Mustaine: You know, out of respect for Glen, I'm not gonna really talk too much about that. He was having some stuff that he was dealing with, and we're talking about someone who left for personal matters. He didn't get into it, so why should I? I frankly don't know what [made him want to leave] other than what he told me, which is he wanted to leave to be with his family. Now, Glen is the brother of our drummer [Shawn Drover], and out of just sheer stupidity you would talk shit about an exiting member when he's got a sibling in your band, so I've got nothing to say. And even if I was mad a Glen, which I'm not, I wouldn't say anything about it. Glen is a talented player, and he had given the thumbs up to Chris Broderick [new Megadeth guitarist] coming in, and Shawn is the one who even recommended Chris Broderick. So, I was really excited.
Glen was influenced a lot by Chris Poland, and we don't play a lot of Megadeth from the Chris Poland era. Chris was totally influenced by Marty Friedman, who we play a lot of music from. It was the longest lineup, and for subsequent guitar players after Marty left, I tried to find people who sounded a little more like him than just kind of going in whatever direction I wanted to.
There was no real rhyme or reason between the choices of a player like Chris Poland, and then jumping to someone like a Jeff Young and then jumping to Marty Friedman. It wasn't like I was advancing or progressing or following any kind of educational graph to get from Chris to Marty. The good thing now is every song is ready to go. Chris has been down here playing the songs with me. We play them in slow-mo, we film them on video cameras and we're going over every single note — so much so that we even corrected things that bass and drums were doing wrong while we were doing rehearsal here prior to leaving for the tour. We got deep down in there and found a bunch of stuff that made it even tighter. I loved playing with Glen. This is a new chapter. I think we've taken it up a level. I appreciate Glen helping me find Chris. Now it's time to move on.

Headbangers Ball Blog: You mentioned Chris reminds you of Marty Friedman, but what do you think he’s going to actually add to the Megadeth picture?
Mustaine: It reminds me a lot of when Ozzy found Randy Rhoads.
Headbangers Ball Blog: That’s a pretty big statement.
Mustaine: Yeah, I’m pretty excited right now. I mean, I don’t know if he’s going to influence the next record or if he’s going to do a few shows and quit. But I look at it like this right now: We’ve had some really, really tight, tight rehearsals here at the house. And it was just fantastic.POSTED: 01/31/2008 - 06:18 pm / quote |

: The worst thing aobut Megadeth IS the inconsistancy. Dave really can't keep a lineup together, and I think that's what holds his band back from really high upper tier. Listening to Megadeth, there is no real "Style" that is easily identifiable besides Dave. With Metallica, the drums, vocals, and both guy's guitar styles are iconic, and can easily be picked out even if you just hear the one track. I wonder if the rumors that Dave is an ******* are true...POSTED: 01/31/2008 - 09:42 pm / quote |

Here's an idea.... if you like megadeth then listen to their music, if you like metallica then listen to their music... if you don't like megadeth then don't listen to their music, if you don't like metallica then don't listen to their music. Dude, damn right. I can't wait until their new album comes out 'cuz I will be there to buy it that exact day. I know that it will be amazing. Not saying that Megadeth sucks, 'cuz Dave was in Metallica, but I hope that Metallica will go back to their old stuff to damn well rape the f*ck out of Megadeth's shit... Later...POSTED: 02/26/2008 - 10:53 am / quote |

: Metallica or Megadeth? The fued continues. I remember back in 1984 my friend, Scott, put his Walkman headphones on me and pressed play and I heard "Anesthesia(Pulling Teeth)" and I was blown away. From there I got into Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth, etc. I've always liked Metallica more but Megadeth is still one of my faves. I think Megadeth has had alot more albums that were weak, for lack of a better term, compared to Metallica, I even like St. Anger. If it wasn't for Dave being kicked out of Metallica we would only have one great metal band and not two.POSTED: 02/27/2008 - 01:09 pm / quote |

: MEGADETH ROCKS! mettalica is lame! wat hapened to all of their solos? theyre an emo band!their solos were good but then they kicked out dave and he was lead so they started to suck. megadeth made the best albums and they still rock! sure metallica is still in bissnuss but they lost all of their talent. cheak out the album youthanasia or even newer United abominations and then listen to new metalica... ull notice that megadeth is waaaaay better! :pPOSTED: 03/06/2008 - 05:30 pm / quote |

: Dave made alot of good songs up when he was in Metallica. Megadeth is good but not as good as Metallica. If you listen to their 80s stuff, it really stomps on Megadeths ass! I love Megadeth! Their better than Metallica now because they didn't go ****in mainstream and quit playing solos. New Metallica is always a hit and miss for me. Marty Friedman really knows how to shred a guitar. Damn! Those videos with him and Jason Becker are ****in amazing. But anyways with the whole Metallica and Megadeth thing, I think Metallica is a better band overall. I think they're about tied in my opinion. I don't know... That's a hard decision. James's vocals aren't good anymore but Dave is still ok! Now i'm probably going to get a bunch of hate mail... That's a hard decision overall. Metallica or Megadeth. Hard to decide. I agree with sim1 and Metal741852 both hahaha What happened to Exodus, Anthrax, Testament? They were good!POSTED: 03/21/2008 - 12:19 am / quote |

: i guess im not supposed to say ****. I wish we had metal bands that were like bands in the 70s and 80s. theres only a couple of new metal bands that i like. I just miss all that raw metal up your ass, metal thrashing mad, fabulous disaster stuffPOSTED: 03/21/2008 - 12:22 am / quote |

: Thats weird...im listening to megadeth right now. What was their newest album called? Youthanasia? Countdown to Extinction? Megadeth has always stayed true to the faith. But i think old metallica is better than old megadethPOSTED: 03/21/2008 - 12:26 am / quote |
