Muse: 'We'll Definitely Start Working On A New Album Next Year'

Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme has confirmed to NME the band are set to start work on a new album in 2011.

The star said the trio plan to head into the studio for the follow up to 2009's 'The Resistance' after they take some time off from touring.

"We'll definitely start working on a new album next year," he revealed before adding: "I think we'll definitely take some time off after this touring period because it's something we've never done. I think the most time we've had off is about six weeks in the last 12 years, so we're due a break."

Muse headlined the Main Stage on the opening night of T In The Park on Friday (July 9).

Speaking about this year's three-day bash, Wolstenholme added: "It's been pretty good here. I think it's the first time I've been to T In The Park and it's not rained which is always a bonus because any festival you do, the weather always has a massive impact. Last time we were here it was terrible."

As long as it's better then The Resistance, I'll be happy. I've really only recently gotten into these guys but their old material is excellent. Absolution, Origin or Symmetry and BHAR were all spectacular start to finish. The Resistance was a let down in comparison, so lets see a return to the heavy space rock roots please?

I hope it feels more like an album, I liked each individual song from the Resistance but the songs were all so different that it felt a bit jumbled, whereas Absolutuon, BHAR, Origin, and Showbiz feel a lot more even. Can't wait though!

You meant it will "way better than" TR, I guess... Because I'm a huge fan of Muse and I think TR is their worst album. And, of course, "Neutron Star Collision (Love is forever)" is the worst song they've ever written.

of course it's a matter of taste, but i think that the resistance is their best album, i like the more symphonic style on the resistance, but if you don't like that, then i can imagine that you like their earlier stuff more. but for myself, i hope it is the same style as The Resistance

Agree with most of the stuff here.

Please ditch the R&B electronica style... but I know they won't. They said they're over their "teenage angst" in the old songs. Lame.

They've just oversaturated the media.
They need to stop for a while and then come back strong.

No, I meant what I said. Yes, TR is the worst Muse album, but still beats the crap out of your average modern rock record. Just keeping my wish somewhat realistic.

I'm a fan myself too I guess, gonna see them live for the second time next Monday actually.

100% agree with NSC

barfrog wrote on 07/12/2010 - 12:01 pm / quote |
Yeah TR was their worst album (if you can actually call anything by Muse "the worst"), but its still better than pretty much all music thats being released atm..... NSC wasnt that bad, it was just different, and i for one would rather hear Matt Bellamy sing a love song than some f****t with a pitch-corrected voice

Even if their next album is worse than TR, itll still s*** on most other modern music

I personally love everything Muse have ever done, except for some of the really off the wall stuff from the early days. Admittedly, The Resistance was a bit of a let down, but I did really enjoy the symphonic stuff they brought in, and I hope they'll keep that in.
Add that style to the OOS or A style, and I'm a happy man.

This next album will divide their fan base and the general public...and it's starting to show. There will be the ultimate fans, the ones who say they're not the same as before, others will say that they sound the same and need to change, and the ones who'll say that they've sold out (eg. movie soundtrack and their music on commercials). That's the nature in the music biz...especially for bands that have stayed for a while and released more than 4 albums. In reality, for them to bring it up to the next level, they gotta seek sponsorship from larger companies (even bands, this big, can't survive to do arena/stadium tours alone during these times) ...just the nature of the music biz. They may have to reinvent themselves before going back to their old sound...it might be good or bad. Hope they continue to get up there, and hopefully work with them again.

I seem to think the opposite... while I didn't really super love any of the tracks on The Resistance, I thought it made for the best album, because it flowed together so nicely.

That being said, I could definitely go for some more of their heavy stuff.

Um... wrong... bands don't need sponsorship to survive... they need sponsorship to maintain a ridiculously large amount of money that they don't need.

Any half decent band can "survive" on touring and album sales alone.

Finally, Chris speaks!! As for comments on the next album, I hope they take it in a new direction. But keep the symphonic stuff, I say; Exogenesis I is the only thing I still go back and listen to from that album. What I would like to see next is a heavier and creepier album with a few soft ballads strategically placed (preferably acoustic ones).

I liked Resistance, but I don't listen to it with other Muse stuff, it's different (though obviously still Muse). Bands need to adapt and embrace new styles, or they get boring and peter out except for the die hard fans (look at bands like AC/DC). Next time they do an album just listen to it as if it were a new band, and don't look for more killer riffs or a repeat of Origin.

Well if it is expirimental then wouldn't that mean muse is looking for feedback on a new idea. If someone thinks undisclosed desires sucks than they should say it. Muse would like it better that way.

Besides Exogenesis, The Resistance did'nt have a symphonic sound. It was without comparison the album with the strongest pop influence, and if it had'nt included Exogenesis, they would have to throw away their new prog label... and their integrity.

Yes i was deeply dissapointed by the album, and almost insulted by "neutron star collision". If they don't do a serious re-invention of themselves, i may have to throw them away, even though they were the band who got me into that sweet prog rock.

I thought it was hilarious how Muse have become a parody of themselves after their last song. Neutron Star Collison (Love Is Forever)? They must have been crying with laughter at the thought of releasing it, for the Twilight soundtrack no less! Saying that I think they are just trying to get famous, but honestly I think they deseverved it. I guess they are just trying to stay at the top.

I don't think that Neutron Star Collision (their only horrible song) is really the direction theya re going in. It was one song for a very mainstream love movie. That's probably why it sounded that way. I can't imagine them doing an album with all songs sounding like NSC.

And really, I don't mind love songs, as long as they are creative love songs (such as what they performed on Showbiz, OoS, and Absolution). I hope it's better than the Resistance (whcih was still a great album).

They ought to stop with the cheesy piano love songs. The last album was dire. And I think personally apart from Matt's vocal work, they've got a little worse live, they seem too over done by studio effects, and the guy who stands in the corner and does most of the work for Muse now.

I hope they take a step back to BHAR, my favourite album, it was more mainstream, but the riffs were actually good...

Though I've never rated Bellamy as a good lyricist, so I expect the worst.

I believe Matt said they went through with releasing NSC so that they could simply get it out of the way that way it wouldn't set the tone for the next album.

Bellamy's lyrics were so terrible last album, too many rhyming words. (Same, blame, dust, trust, won, begun etc.) Lyrically Resistance songs sound like the first he ever penned. Almost every chorus sounded incredibly cheesy and I can't even sit through exogenesis. Also parts like the Resistance outro seem so recycled, despite all this talk of experimenting, it feels almost identical to the citizen erased outro. I doubt I will love anything new Muse puts out, mainly because of Bellamy.

Hope they make decent music again for the first time in like five years.

and unnatural selection has a pretty solid riff as well

nothing twilight influenced please
I mean if you think about it, before the twilight movies, there was Absolution, BHAR, and Origin of Symmetry.
After Twilight movies, there was The Resistance
which wasn't bad but not as good as the older stuff.
So i hope that this new album will be worth waiting for.

are you ****ing joking? matt wrote all the orchestral parts in the resistance, the insane musical talent is there its just in a different package. i would love to see any of todays main stream bands produce something half as good as the resistance.

GameSkate wrote on 07/13/2010 - 04:22 am / quote |
Argh, stop with this "Resistance is ##%# WE NEED MOAR TEH OOS!" crap, seriously.
I don't want another OOS, Showbiz, BHaR, Absolution or The Resistance.

I saw an interview with Bellamy and he said that they would be going in opposite direction with their new album. He said is was going to be "more personal". Looking forward to it, Resistance was the worst Muse album IMO.

MK ULTRA was probably the best thing about the last album but it's still no Plug in baby/Showbiz/bliss is it? At least it still had a few killer riffs though in MK and Unnatural Selection.

I can't right now see the next album going in a direction that I'll like, it's either going to be faggoty Twilight music or stupid political stuff I bet.

Ey, the resistance was still a decent album, just not as brilliant or progressive (though it's hard to argue the symphony as not being progressive) as some of their previous. For the battle of my least favorite album by Muse, for me, it's a tie between Showbiz & The resistance, though i still do like three quarters of the songs on both records.

stupidity all around the comments. ever album by muse was wonderful.

I like BHaR best though...

Just don't record anything like "Undisclosed Desires" because that is hands down the worst thing Muse has ever done.
I agree that Undisclosed Desires is my least favorite song I've heard by them, but I loved the Resistance, I haven't heard the first two albums tho. But I can't wait for the new one.

And I liked Neutron Star Collision too *shrugs*

:O What!? You must listen to the first 2 albums now. Go do it. 2012 Muse should be sick tho. I like everything they have ever done really except for a select few slow songs I don't find interesting (Megalomania etc)

I like their albums Showbiz and Origin Of Symmetry. Black Holes and Revelations and Absolution were alright too. But I didn't like The Resistance that much. It was alright but I thought they could've done a better job.

Im thinking the whole new album will be relating somehow to the "2012" end of the world thing. Matt is pretty deep into conspiracies and what not. I just hope its more like the early muse, Dont get me wrong the resistance isnt their best work but it wasnt terrible. I hope they dont write anything like neutron fag collision
