Slayer's Kerry King on B.C.Rich Guitars

MusiciansFriend reports: Kerry King is one of metal's brightest guitar stars. His band, Slayer, has played to sold-out venues for years and is regarded as one of the best (and loudest) bands playing on the dark side of the metal scene. King's fast and furious style, his unique riffs, and his overall precision have won him the respect of guitarists of all styles. Recently, B.C. Rich introduced a new, affordable Kerry King signature model. Here's the low-down on the KKV from Kerry King himself:

Why and how did you get together with B.C. Rich to create this new signature model?

Kerry: Well, I've been with B.C. Rich pretty much since the dawn of time. I endorsed them from probably like '86 to '90. I went with another company for a while, then I decided to try them again. At a point where I wasn't signed with anyone, we talked about my coming back. They made me a guitar and I liked it.Then at the NAMM Show a couple of years ago, they brought up the idea of a model based on the one I play live, but one that was affordable to the masses. I had always been against taking the low road, but they mocked one up and it looked and played great. It eventually became the KKV. Now, with all these B.C. Rich "in store" appearances I'm doing, a lot of people buy one just so I can sign it for them. It's also a good starter guitar. For a kid who's a big Slayer fan, dad can pop down to the music store, buy one, and if the kid stays with it, he can upgrade it when the kid's ready or move to a guitar that's more like the Ferrari I play.

You always play a neck-thru but this one isn't, is it?

No, no. It's a bolt-on but not like a bolt-on from 10 years ago. This one is actually very playable. The neck is angled correctly for the way you lay your hand on the neck, and the heel is nicely contoured.

What do you play onstage?

I play the one the KKV is based on and a Warlock-style custom.

All B.C. Rich?

Yes, all B.C. Rich. They make great guitars.

What about the neck's action?

Oh, that's a good point. I'm glad you asked that question. My style requires a fast neck with easy action. The neck on the KKV was shaped to be similar to the one on my stage axe, and B.C. Rich has done a good job. When I play the KKV, it feels very comfortable and natural to me. This has to do with its slim profile and with its proper angle from the body. It makes it easy to have the action set low. For me, this permits the kind of speed I need, but it also makes the guitar easy to play for the young player who's just starting out. I've always felt that players who are just learning shouldn't have to fight their guitar. The KKV comes from the box with a relatively low action and is therefore easier to play.

You seem to prefer the V body style. Any particular reason for that?

I brought that back looking for my own thing around '88. I remember I was talking to the guys at B.C. Rich. I was saying that nobody's really playing a V these days. If you guys made a V, it would set a precident in a way, because there's never been a 24-fret Flying V to my knowledge. The 24 frets was their thing, sort of a B.C. Rich trademark. I said, so why don't we go with a V, and I got, not the first one that came out of B.C. Rich... that went to one of the owner's sons... but I got the second one.

The only guy at the time who was playing one, and he was more of a guitar god than a star, was Michael Schenker. But his wasn't hot- rodded like the B.C. Rich ones, with Dimarzio pickups back then, and now EMGs which everybody likes because they're pretty hot.

What about the pickups? Did you have any hand in designing them?

Well, no. But they're good ones for the purpose. Remember, this is a starter guitar. These are good quality pickups with pretty high output. Like I said, this isn't an end-all axe, but it's excellent for the price and a solid guitar to get started on.

If you put the pickups I use in it, and that's another option, it would be a significant and easy upgrade. But that's something to plan for later, when you're getting pretty seriously into playing.

What about the graphics on this guitar? Do they match the graphics you have on your body?.

My body? No (laughter). They match the ones I have on the guitar I play.

ok first of all, kerry king also uses jackson guitars live, not only b.c. rich. he uses his signature KING V Jackson more then the b.c rich. That was the case last 2 times i saw slayer anyways. And second of all, i think jacksons are great guitars. I disagree totally with CSguitarvocal. The reason why you say *** jackson is because you had a js30.....a js30 dude, thats a piece shit worth like 250$ no more then 350$ with jackson made pickups . Jackson are great quality guitars, especially if you know how to gear it and set up your amp. I don't own a B.C. Rich, but my brother has an NJ Warlock and I love how it sounds. I do agree that the look gets old after a while, but it does look nice overall (He has the Metal Master one, with the white graphics on it). It plays like a gem. The only thing that I could complain about would be that it gets heavy after a while! It's hard to do a gig with it, cause you've got to be jumpin around and all... also, for all you people who think slayer sux (which the most certainly dont), why the heck did you read this article in the first place?

I have the same problem. Its not that the neck is heavy but they are very unbalanced guitars....try moving your strap pegs, i moved both strap pegs on my beast and it balances it better. Problems with two screw holes showing you ask?....just buy two new strap pegs and have four...kinda sounds wierd but you can have different strap peg variations without making it look like swiss cheese.

hmm....yea i dont see what all the damn fuss is about. in my friends band, one of the guitarists plays a bc, and the other plays a epiphone, and yea they sound equally good..the epiphone actually has a meaner more metal sound. what you people need to realize is that expensive guitars are all the same, its the amps and the effects processors that give them a 'metal' sound. for example, take a gibson les paul and run it through a dod grunge pedal and a ibanez amp and its gonna sound not so good, but take an epiphone and run it straight through a marshall amp, i guarantee it will sound just as good as the gibson with the other setup

They thing with BC Rich's is everyone goes for the Bronze series, because it looks cool and no one cares for the sound. Platinum, Platinum Pro and NJ series are all kick-ass guitars, and they look as sweet as they play. But what it all really comes down to is preference.

The lower end BC Riches are bad, but I like the higher end models. I don't see why so many people dislike them. I like BC Rich and Jackson. But at the time that I needed a guitar, a BC Rich lefty was cheaper than a Jackson, and it's been working fine. I would rather have an ESP/LTD actually because that's just me. heres my take on BC Rich- I have a bronze series warlock, and so does my neighbot. my warlock sounds good, his doesnt. i have a small crate amp and he has a big one and i buy ernie ball top heavy bottoms from him all the time.

you see, BC Rich is like Fords. you see, most ppl who dont like ford either heard they suck, or tried driving a lemon. BC Rich is the same-no 2 of there guitars sound exactly the same. its all by chance if you buy online and thats where most ppl get them. if your BC Rich sounds bad, get it set up, and if you still dont like it then sell it cause u got bad pickups. that is the only fault i see with BC Rich- soem are bad some are good

And for anyone that bought a Bronze warlock or otherwise, you get what you pay for so wuit crying about how much it sucks and quit being a tightwad and invest in something you love, its worth it in the long run. I just went out buying a new guitar and wasn' impressed with any B.C. rich I played (high end and low end models.) I went ahead and bought an Zakk Wylde Les Paul and would Highly ecommend it over the Kerry king guitars. Zakk knows his shit and considering its his specifications gives one a clue that its probably a good guitar. It plays, looks, and sounds like a dream.

Personally, I am not a big fan of the B.C Rich Series. Some of them do look sweet, but you can really find a better metal guitar than a BC rich for sound. The only reason this will sell is because Kerry is a great guitar player. The reason he sounds the way he does is because he can play.... not because he plays an over rated B.C Rich

One of the best metal guitars I ever played was a signature Bc Rich for some metal guitarist, I can't remember his name, it had a body shape unique to his guitar...I was a bit miffed when I found out that the guy got charged for pedophillia tho...kinda turned me off the guitar!
