Slayer's Tom Araya: Demiricous Are 'Way Too Slayer'

Metal Maniacs magazine recently conducted an interview with Slayer members Kerry King and Tom Araya. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow, according to Blabbermouth.net:

Metal Maniacs: Kerry, you're notorious for keeping up with many of thew new extreme bands?

Kerry: I like to know more about who we should be touring with and stuff like that. I'm very selective. There's a lot of good bands, but there's a lot of bands that sound just like everybody else. I like the ones that are unique. Without sticking my foot in my mouth, my favorite new band is Demiricous (audio samples), and they sound just like us. I love those guys. They're making up their own tunes, and yeah, they sound like us, but they're good songs. I saw them play and they're outta control! It was great.

Tom: Kerry was praising them so I listened to them and I was thinking, 'Can we sue somebody for plagiarism?' [Laughs] I even asked my manager that. I was like, 'Can we sue someone for sounding way too much like us?' They're way too? way too Slayer. [Laughs] I even played it for someone and they said, 'If I didn't know any better and you were singing, this would be Slayer.' I'm not too hip on that.

But can that kind of worship be flattering in a way?

Tom: To me, it's not. Flattery is when someone creates something but it's their own. When you f--king sound just like the band you love, that's not flattery? that's copyright infringement. [Laughs]

Kerry really pays attention and is aware of the up-and-coming bands and he's on top of the [heavy] music scene. I like all music. Kerry's really into the metal. I'm not always on top of all that. I only hear what people send to me, you know? Sometimes I get discs and they just sit there. I don't even put 'em on unless someone says to me, 'You have to listen to this.' If it's really groundbreaking and new, and it's something you hear from various people, eventually you take the time and go, 'I need to listen to this; there's too much talk about it.' Unless it's something recommended by a number of people, I won't listen to it. I like music in general. I listen to all kinds of music, and that has a big influence, I think, in how I write lyrically and what I like musically.

Do you think you'll ever play another record in its entirety live like the band did with "Reign in Blood"? "South of Heaven" perhaps?

Tom: It's becoming a trendy thing now. I don't know. We have some really cool albums, but I don't think we'll ever do that again.

Kerry: Probably not. And I just don't like enough songs off 'South of Heaven'.

Really? That's interesting.

Kerry: I hate 'Cleanse the Soul'. That's one of the black marks in our history, in my book. I just f--king think it's horrible. [Laughs] I hate the opening riff. It's what we call a 'happy riff.' It's just like 'la-lala-la-la-la.' I can't see myself playing it, but after that, where it gets heavier, I like that section. If we ever did a medley, I'd put part of that in there. Like 'Reign in Blood' is short ? 10 songs in 30 minutes ? it desn't take up much of your set. I would consider 'Seasons in the Abyss', but that's a little longer, so you're alienating anybody that may hate that record. 'Seasons' is 40 minutes long. You'd have to cut out two other songs [from the set] and people might be like, 'Damn, I wish they would've played that. But now that we did 'Reign', so many people are doing the same thing we did. I heard DIO did one ['Holy Diver'].

Anthrax is doing "Among the Living" on a few dates this summer.

Kerry: Yeah, I heard about Anthrax. Metallica did 'Master of Puppets'. I'm like, 'C'mon, man, can't you guys get some original fucking ideas?' [Laughs]

Demiricous do sound a lot like Slayer, but they seem to have a little more of a hardcore edge to them. Both bands rock, though.

I rather enjoy Demiricous. It's basically Slayer with...how can I put this...the singer of Demiricous sounds much more Satan than Tom Araya.

Never really liked Slayer all that much. And I really think Kerry King needs to shut his mouth.

I'm going out to buy the new record tomorrow. I just got "Reign in Blood" last week and it blew me away! So "Christ Illusion" tomorrow :P.

They probably just want some media attention given they just released a new CD. They may be metal gods but it's up to them stirring up controversy that that album is going to sell. And if it doesn't sell, they don't get paid.

So I reckon they'll just try and say some stupid stuff for a couple of months until it's shifted a few million.

It's funny how people are saying that it's gay that they made this new album to be controversial to get it to sell...Slayer has always done that lol so stop bitching about it. That band Demiricous sounds pretty sick...that blast beat on the second song on the preview in that link though man...that was the weakest blast beat I've ever heard lol it made me laugh, other than that theyre pretty cool, but they still have that hardcore edge to them...and I need Christ Illusion...Fuckin SLAYER...Still Reigning

I think they were joking around a bit but king seemed like a narrow minded dumbass. Like how could anyone only listen to metal? Like metal music is kickass but I'm surprised he doesn't listen to classic rock or punk since their first album had punk influences on it. In this interview, king seems like the perfect stereotype of a metalhead. And I can't see how king hates south of heaven, I think it's their best album, it's got more of a sabbath sound to it with the slower tempo and Arraya's vocals aren't as annoying(less screaming). I've heard all their albums and I think south of heaven is their heaviest(yes even heavier than reign in blood). Just cause you play fast with screaming vocals doesn't make it heavy, like look at sabbath, they are the heaviest band of all time and they play really slow compared to other metal bands. Plus how could king hate cleanse the blood? It's a sweet song and one of their best. Like I couldn't believe that when I heard it.

recliner33 wrote on 08/18/2006 - 01:42 am / quote |
^^^Like don't get me wrong, reign in blood is heavy, but I'm tired of people saying how it was one of the heaviest albums ever made. Master of puppets was a lot heavier in my opinion and it was slower than reign in blood and hetfield hardly screamed at all. And I think that Master of Reality by black sabbath is the heaviest album of all time and practically every song on is played really slow.

Kerry King comes across as a butt hole because he is one. King and slayer are all about cheap pops and there nothing more unoriginal than that. It all about "look how evil we are" and "did I mention our satan worship, got to include that in every interview". I think Dewey Finn said it best "you guy are forgetting about one little thing, its called the music!"

It does annoy me to some xtent when i hear bands and think they sound either exactly like another band or like a combo of two similar bands. I think its fine for upcoming bands who are playing at small gigs for no reason just not for bands who intend to make it big on a version of another bands style.

I'm sorry to metal fans out there, but when I hear Kerry King going on about how he likes to pick out the new bands that sound unique, I don't really believe that there's much more that metal bands can do these days. They're all sounding the same to me. And all this about how heavy a band is - that's all pretty crap. Look at 'Master of Puppets': the heaviest track on that album is 'The Thing That Should Not Be', and it's probably the worst track.
I also feel that Kerry King is overrated. His guitar work is a little too chromatic for my liking. And 'Cleanse the Soul' isn't the black mark of Slayer, the last decade is the black mark of Slayer. GNR4EVA said it best.

hmmm, jelous of their success? your a dumbass to start. about everyone i could think of that i know, no matter what type of music they like, knows who slayer is. many less could name anthrax or megadeth.

Slayer is also more succesfull than metallica, because you will probably say "lolz, what about metallica?"
metallica lost about 80 percent of their fanbase with St. Anger. so they lose.
sure, they are both a household name, but i am pretty damn sure that slayer is the winner for being the most well known metal band.

Grab yourself some Opeth man, there are metal bands out there that are doing things differently. I love Slayer but Kerry's not my favourite guitarist, nor is he the best spokesperson for metal. He makes people who like metal look like a bunch of beer drinking meatheads. I think most of the metal bands today sound like old Slayer one way or another... I just think metal is so bland now, just about all of the more mainstream stuff from America is... boring. It all sounds like it came from somewhere else. And you can't really say that Slayer re-invented themselves ever, and I know that's taking a very broad brush to them because of course they've changed, but most of it's pretty much the same. People bag Korn out, but at least they were just doing something a different. Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for My Valentine, Trivium... they're all doing the same thing. As a person who likes heaps of different music, and particularly progressive and fluid bands that don't stick to a formula, I just find it hard to listen to because it's all generally the same thing. Maybe Slayer laid the first steps to this boring new wave of metal. I'm not bagging these bands musical ability or talent I just don't think they use it. And ALL of these new bands sound like dicks in their interviews, they have this "artistic, dark, sophisticated" image and then, in the A7X interview, their guitarist is like "i like tits and ass and hot bodies and the best place is strip clubs!". It's not just about the music anymore. You've gotta have the image and they all look the same. And that's ****ed up.
