White Stripes Interview Themselves

An interview in which Meg White interogates her band mate Jack about the pair's new record could be revealing, fascinating or at least just a little intriguing, reports Xfm. However, in a new chat previewing 'Get Behind Me Satan’ the pair are up to their old tricks leading fans up every garden path available to them. Quite, quite barmy…

Released on June 6, the album "Get Behind Me Satan" is one of the most hotly anticipated of the year, despite the fact that it didn't even exist prior to March 2005. Written and recorded swiftly, security around copies of the duo’s new record is high and rumours of its contents are escalating wildly.

With a whole lot of "purring" (?), insinuations about Jack’s sexuality and whole lot of "Shut up"-ing, this interview, originally published by their label XL, may be the pair’s most baffling one yet:

Meg White interviews Jack White about "Get Behind Me Satan"

Meg: Jack are these songs about you?
Jack: No Meg, they're about you.
M: I wish.
J: No you don't. You know I don't write about myself or my friends, let alone my sister.
M: I thought maybe you made an exception after coming out of the closet.
J: (purrs)

M: Can you tell me a little bit about the album cover?
J: I don't know Meg, can you tell me a little bit about the universe?
M: You want to talk quantum physics or quantum mechanics?
J: Shut up.

M: What does "Blue Orchid" mean to you?
J: The same thing pizza means to you.
M: Jack, why can't you be cool?
J: Because you're trying to trick me again!
M: Jack the only trick I ever played on you was never tricking you at all.
J: You're right.

M: Your voice sounds really high on this record like the old days.
J: I noticed that too.
M: Want a cigarette?
J: Shut up.

M: Was this album pleasant for you to make?
J: It's always pleasant to work with you Meg.
M: I know that, but did you enjoy yourself?
J: This album was cursed when we started, and then suddenly came around near the end. Then I started to enjoy it, Remember?
M: Yeah I remember.

J: Anything else "you" would like to know?
M: Only if you're happy with the record.
J: Yes I am. I think it's our most dense sounding record yet. Don't you?
M: Shut up.

J: Want to make another one?
M: Hmmmmmm... With you?
J: (purrs)

Basically. Jack isn't a bad guitarist...nothing special really, but not bad at all. But god, the drumming makes me want to hurt puppies and small children.

But this interview appeared to make no sense whatsoever...they're a pretty goofy pair, though they try too hard a lot of the time.

jack writes what i would like to call modern folk music, its not quite rock, its not quite garage, its all about the use of words and melody. he explains this in the interviews for the elephant album. does anybody here remember melody. the drumming is simple yes but for a reason, getting a better drummer would be easy apparently most of the people in the UG are better musicians than they, so it appears as if jack would have a wide array of choices to build a technical speed metal band. However if his vision does not fit your tastes go flame the blink 182 kids because your relentless badgering makes you look infantile and wastes my time.

Meg doesn't suck at drums, I mean she keeps time which is more than most drummers can do.

White Stripes are overrated by the media (it's not their fault).Meg has very simplistic drumming which fits the music but hearing the same beats every song gets tedious.

Overall, their one of the better mainstream rock bands today.

minorbravo wrote on 05/20/2005 - 02:22 pm / quote |
why is it everytime someone criticizes a band the response is always "I'd like to see you make oodles of cash like they do". Is that what music is all about? making money? getting laid? making highly anticipated albums? not to me it isn't. I like musicians who don't give themselves self interviews and try to be funny, or musicians who think they are great but they really arent. I have the white stripes dvd, and I watched and decided after all this little white stripes is cool bandwagon passes by they really haven't left that much of an impact on rock and roll. Everything they do has been done before better, so I have decided they suck. And when my band rises to the top and kills off all these lame bands that are around today, then I will have the last laugh. by the way, why dont they just get a bass player it would add texture to their sound.

I like the White stripes. They have a unique sound that I think is interesting and fresh. Some blues-ish stuff, some folk rock, some hard-rock stuff, they're versatile. They're kind of like Nirvana; not in their sound, but in that their music is pretty simplistic, but it still sounds good and is fun to listen to.

I agree that the White Stripes' popularity is a trend, but I would like to contest that it should not be. They are an awesome band, and I can hardly wait for the new cd.

I thought the interview was funny, though not very informative.

I'm gonna buy an extra copy of the album for every person on here who says they sucked, so shut up about it or you'll just be contributing to their popularity.

greenday had at least one or 2 hits that i wouldnt mind spinning
but their last record said this basically
"hey we we're about to fade away and why dont we make a record that all the kids can bang there heads too and well make thousands
sure the songs will suck but hey well make money"
the next thing they'll do is fake their own death just for publicity

Jack is the best guitarist of all time, except slash n page. just cos he don't play at speed of light, don't make him shit. He's the only guitarist in the world, cept maybe slash, who cares only about how good he sounds, rather than how fast it is. And he has one o the best voices ever!
Meg's drumming may be simple, but if the stripes had a proficient drummer, they would just suck. The whole idea behind the band is to make every single sound count, and a 'better' drummer, or the prescence of a bassist, would destroy that.
Also, why should they have a bassist, just cos every other band has one?
The Stripes are the best band since Nirvana. period.

Here's how it is:

Jack and Meg said for years that they were brother and sister, and everybody thought they acted strange for being brother and sister.

I think jack white is extremely talented...singer/songwriter/guitarist/organ/piano player. I mean, we all wish we could pick up a guitar and sing and play at the same time, and I try everyday and some of my hack jobs are okay but, really the haters need to realize what this guy is accomplishing. THe masses are pissed because they are breaking rules, by not having a bassist. But f*ck it. The White Stripes have completely changed what everyone was used to. I'm glad they're recordings are raw. I'm glad its not perfect. I'm glad they aren't polished. The best part is they've gotten this big with no major label backing. Started out as a pair just playing small gigs and recorded their own albums, and look where they're at now. Who cares if they're brother/ sister, ex husband and wife. Everyone gets wrapped up in the gossip. Just listen to the music, if you don't like it, then move on. I do have every album and I have to say that not every song on every album is the best song, but every album definately has some good ones. If you like rock, or folk, i'm sure you can find something on each album that you like. If you're a metal head, go listen to the new megadeth. White Stripes are classic rock. The best American band since Nirvana.

i love the white stripes, they write songs sometimes for the fun of it and sometimes about real issues (e.g. the big three killed my baby shows jacks dislike of cars, ironic cuz hes from motor city). i think they r definetely my favorite band that is around today. most music today is very processed sounding, like it was just made to be a product (e.g. all those underground bands, green day, etc. not that i have anything against these types of music, they're just annoying to me and sometimes boring). i prefer old music from the 60's and 70's especially. beatles, zeppelin, hendrix. the white stripes recordings r very old sounding which i enjoy. do u ppl say they suck just cuz they're music doesnt sound processed enough? thats a pretty bad reason. i like jack whites voice too. its his real voice, no real enhancements made to it, not whiny pop sounding at all and its very rock sounding in the fast songs and nice in the ballads/folk songs. and meg whites drumming is simple cuz 1. she doesnt really play drums, 2. if it were more complicated it would detract from jack's guitar and vocals. he is an amazing song writer as well, simple sometimes, and very catchy. simple is always best (but have u heard some of his solos, some r very complicated). ppl who do not like the stripes, what bands do u like?

Just wanna say nobody (In their right minds that is....) ever dissed Bob Dylan for sounding too simple in his early days despite 99% of his first lot of albums being solo acoustic songs. Most people recognised that the melodies and metre were expressing as much as a million skwiggly ever could. The Stripes, while in no way comparable have that quality too and as the guy before said they sound like the songs are recorded ad hoc and they are better for it. As for the haters well I don't know whether laugh or cry. Go and listen to some Iggy or Velvet Underground....find out what a rock record should sound like or *** off and listen to Van Halen....jeez.

I only recently started liking the White Stripes, and in honestly, the simplicity of a song, whether it's hard or easy, isn't what makes it good, it's if it's catchy sounding. some of the most fun songs to listen to are extremely simple, so whether he solo's all the time or just please the basic seven nation army rhythm, they're still awesome.

OK, this ones for all you candy cane kids!

Meg is minimilist meaning: SHE KEEPS RHYTHM.
in the simple way she does it, the rhythm becomes pure and she doesn't have to try to hard(I've never experienced a drummer w/ the skill to be simple). with the drum style she uses, the rhythm is your heartbeat, something a person who is into music and not TRENDS(lol, from earlier)should feel in the very fabric of their being, and you should just dance, and stop analyzing!
When Jack plays, he's not showing off(cuz remember, they're both minimilist) he is going for melody, again I don't any guitarists who have the skill to be simple. With meg's drumming, the purpose of the melody should be guidance for the dance you are doing to your own heartbeat, it should be a guidline for how to move.
and if you could possibly diss' the stripes lyrics or sense of humor or the way they act, you don't have simplistic depth (funny term) it takes to be a candy cane kid. Stop analyzing, Just have FUN, remember that like from when you were a kid...
(...a candy cane kid knows how)

Ok...normally I never bash on bands. But I have to say, the White Stripes are THE most untalented band ever, no joke. Meg White has no ***ing idea how to play, so she chooses 1 or 2 of her drums and just hits them in unison for every ***ing song. I just took a shit about 10 minutes ago before I read this article, and if I crawled down the toilet pipes and grabbed the shit I took, sat it on a still in front of a drumset, and gave it two, no, one drumstick, it would play better then gay ass Meg White! Jack White has a horrible voice, it sounds as if a hamster crawled up his ass and is trying to scream for help but it keeps coming out of Jack's mouth. Also, Jack is a lame guitarist, he plays pretty much the same ***ing riff every ***ing song I've heard, and I've heard at least like 5 songs from them. The only reason that people like them is because they think their songs are "catchy," in which case I have to disagree. FUCK THE WHITE STRIPES.

Benn-Static wrote on 05/23/2005 - 01:03 am / quote |

Dudes...no bashing!

I'm not saying these guys are Led Zeppelin or Incubus or anything, but Jack and Meg are one of the most original bands out there. Jack is a good singer, reminiscent of Robert Plant, as well as a knowledgable guitarist. He can play the piano as well. As for Meg, she keeps time, but brings together tempo and key changes. And the simplicity is where lies the beauty. Too many bands strive for perfection and forget what music is all about. It may not seem like it, but their heads are in the right place.

If you don't like them, then why are you reading this article? To much time to waste? There are plenty of other bands out there you like...why not go and praise them instead of wasiting your time on bashing other bands? Whether it's true or not.

this from a person who's name is Nirvana101?..now don't get me wrong i love nirvana but if you put Jack agaisnt Kurt i'd go with Jack everytime. An Meg isn't a horrible drummer, If you keep a song in time and rhythm then your doing your job! No she isn't Dave Grohl, Jon Bonham or Jimmy Chamberlin and she dosn;t have to be coz the Stripes arn't like Smahing Pumpkins or Nirvana...discussion closed.

yo Benn-static, don't listen to them then?

how many platanium albums have you got?... 0?
we'll when you have sold as many records as him feel free to bitch about his band.

you ever listend to lars ulrich drum? 9/10 its the same drum beat? does it matter? no... does anybody care? no... they may play simple music and simple beats but unless your a guitarist or someone with music knowledge you aren't going to know this... i remember back when i was first learnin to play 7nation army when i had just picked up a guitar for the first time (*reminises*) my mates were like "woah thats amazing i love this song" and thought i was awesome because they dont know the process of playing a guitar they only know what they hear, it's the same with tom delonge from blink he may be a "crap" guitarist but he is a crap guitarist with a nicer house and more money than any dude on this forum... if you look at the proper virtuosos like vai etc they don't sell that many records because not many people wana listen to just guitars all the time, they want something they can hum or nod their head to (thats kind of hard to do during sweep picked arpeggios and tapped harmonic runs...

anyways my rant is over for now
the main point: simple is effective

Thw White Stripes are awesome. You don't need Portnoy to play the style that the Stripes play, that's the whole point. I bet Meg is an awesome drummer, but the simple beats are all that they need for their style.
Anyway, you try finding another band in the top 10 at the moment with songs similar to what's on this album. Unless R'n'B grew out of the whole 'box that you press a few buttons and it makes noise' phase, you wont find too many.
