Extreme: 'Comfortably Dumb' Premieres On UG Profiles

Extreme will release Saudades De Rock (pronounced "sow-dodge"), their first studio album in thirteen years, August 12th on Open E Records. The CD will coincide with their first world tour in over twelve years.

Ultimate-Guitar.com is now premiering a track from Saudades De Rock, called "Comfortably Dumb," exclusively on the band's UG Profile.

The iconic rock foursome - vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo – recorded their fifth studio offering at NRG Studios in Los Angeles with Bettencourt at the helm as producer and mixer. Saudades De Rock boasts 13 tracks, including the infectious roar of "Star," the groove-laden, swagger of "King," a raw funk rock anthem called "Learn To Love", and the expressive ballad "Ghost."

"'Saudades' was always a beautiful word to me," Bettencourt explains about the Portuguese album moniker. "It expresses a longing; an underlying sadness for something or someone that's been missing in your life, and never quite sure if it will ever return. In this case, for us, it's Rock and Roll. Saudades de Rock."

Gary Cherone adds, "I like how it expresses that longing we've been feeling to play for our fans and be together again."

The multi-platinum, Boston-bred band's 2008 "Take Us Alive" world tour gets underway on July 29th at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and will be anchored by a hometown gig two days later at the Bank of America Pavilion. In advance of the tour, Extreme will be a co-headliner on July 11th at the five day Rocklahoma Festival in Pryor, OK.

I just can't take the chorus seriously. Comfortably Dumb is not a good title in my opinion, plus the chorus goes "I have become comfortably dumb". You think they could've at least changed the words from the Floyd song.

Pornographitti is one of my favorite albums and I really really wanted to like this song but it just lacks some of the feel of their older stuff. I think's its the mix, it sounds like it was recorded in some dudes garage to me.

He's not trying to impersonate Chris Cornell. He just sounds like Gary Cherone. He's always sounded like this, it's just his voice. And maybe over a decade ago he heard Cornell sing and thought it was cool and maybe influential but seriously...

Ha ha ha....that's the funniest thing I've heard all day. The song is pretty good although I wish they had called it something else/done something else for the chorus. And I agree, the singer comes off sounding like he's trying to sound like a mix of Chris Cornell and Brian Johnson.

Travis^Co, I think You should listen to "Waiting For the Punchline" very closely. This song sounds remarkably like what they were doing on that album back in 1995. I'm not saying that it doesn't have that "Audio" vibe, but I would be far from suggesting any ripping or coping Audioslave

Right on, Qbson. It's so funny to hear these posters saying "sounds like they're copying (place random 10-or-less-year-old band's name here)" when Extreme has had tunes that sounded like this since the late 80's. Who's copying who?
Besides... even if they ARE copying Audioslave's style somehow, Audioslave is copying from half a dozen of THEIR influences. Why not?

Here's what boggles my mind... none of you meat-head, loud-mouth, Extreme-hatin' message-postin' Guitar Hero geniuses out there have put it together yet that the TITLE of this album ought to give it away: that this is a TRIBUTE to classic rock. It's a "sad longing" for the sound of real rock'n'roll. "Star" is channeled directly from Queen. "Run" couldn't be more obvious as a Bowie appreciation. The riff from "Slide" reminds me of the James Gang's "Funk 49."
Just because something's "new and original" doesn't keep it from sucking. There's plenty of new bands trying to do something nobody's done before that put ONE cover of ONE classic song on their album just to sell discs, and they're a far bigger bunch of bullsh!tters than a band very obviously paying tribute to their heroes, without just cashing in on cover song recognition. Would you rather hear a new song written in the style of Zeppelin, with a nod to Van Halen's guitar skills and Peart's prog-rock drumming style? Or, as I'm starting to suspect from some of you, would you prefer to hear Celine Dion's relatively reverent cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long?"
