I maintain that patrick stump has one of the best rock music voices out there at the moment. Even if they are over hyped and the only reason anyone has heard of the bassist is because he got his cock out on the internet, they still have some good music.

Whatever, you guys don't HAVE to like them, obviously, but denying that there's something there in their music is ridiculous. They're hardworking, great to their fans, and unlike almost everyone else in the business, they evolve with their records instead of running in place. I love TTTYG too, it came out while I was in highschool and I will never forget my first FOB show with like 15-25 people there, but they've progressed so much musically, and I super respect them for that. It's hard to change and keep your sound, but they do it, and they do it well.

Their new album is really awesome and Patrick is one of the best vocalists in rock music right now, his voice is amazing.

their new album is a step further back for a band that started off strong with Take This To Your Grave. Every album has been a step closer to being pure pop, cookie cutter music. they need to record an album that sounds like shit, because then, i can be sure that they wrote it.

Love Fall Out Boy so much. Well, in a semi-dedicated fan way, not a 12 year-old girl way... lol This album was a nice surprise, especially after how almost-mediocre Infinity on High was. It's a funny thing: Every single time an album leaks onto the internet two weeks early, within a week from that point it premiers on Myspace. Same thing happened with the new AAR record, which is surprisingly good. Either way, kudos for a really amazing record, FOB. I listened to it 3 days straight (literally) after I first got it last weekend.

it's far from cookie cutter music. the arrangements and harmonies are well above what's on the radio.
yes, yes, we all enjoyed TTTYG. Get over it. I don't want to hear them make the same self-deprecating album with fast 4/4 guitar rhythms every 2 years.
artists have to evolve.

and these guys are really nice. i met them before they got famous. they're hard working musicians, and spent a lot of time out on the road to build the fanbase that got them famous. that's more than you can say for a lot of musicians today.

Pete Wentz has come far too far. It's remarkable. The man cannot play a bass guitar properly, what on earth do prodcers say or think when he does his bit on a record? His lyrics are written backwards and with titles that are far too long and uneccessery in most cases. For a so-called A&R man he has a complete and utter inability to find anyone fresh, exciting or talented, most certainly far too one dimensional in any case. He takes marketing and promotion to stupid and very pathetic levels (fancy allowing your cock to end up online for christ sake). And why and how is he always the star of his band videos when HE CANT PLAY HIS INSTRUMENT PROPERLY. IT IS A F***ING OUTRAGE AND WE SHOULD NOT BE GIVING HIM THE TIME OF DAY

i am amazed at the low ratio of people professing their hatred of the band. personally, i feel like they have been taking more and more risks with each and every album. not necessarily in terms of radio singles, but over the course of whole albums. the first album was pretty straightforward, although a good listen for those of us who like punk-based pop music. from under the cork tree (like many, my first exposure to the band) perfected this style, with even catchier lyrics/instrumentation. infinity on high showed them straying away from their previous formula, with more ambitious songs, with more complex vocal arrangements and even some piano parts. thus far, i've heard i don't care (a reasonable single that goes back to their roots somewhat while still incorporating their newer, bluesier sound) and headfirst slide into cooperstown (which is so unlike anything i have ever heard on the radio, and at the same time more infectious than any song in recent memory). these two songs are both very enjoyable, and if the rest of the album is anything similar (i suspect there will be even more variation), this album could be their best, and most likely one of the best this year.

also: although pete is much too far into the spotlight considering his duties in the band, he did try to bring music videos back to mtv, and i have to applaud him for that.

POSTED: 12/12/2008 - 04:37 pm / quote |
seveninsign :
sorry for the double post, but the appeal to patrick stump's voice comes from his incredible range and control. although in the past i had seen him fail at transferring his skill into the live performance, the live cd/dvd showcases his abilities very well. although he may not be the best singer around today (i consider stephen christian from anberlin to hold that title), he does have an incredible voice, and is better than most.

They don't need to complain about not liking them. I mean complain, as in "
God help us...they're BREEDING." I'm neutral about the band, and seriously. If you don't like the music then that's fine. Making up witty remarks about "no, everyone knows they have a common vagina..." is acting like a 5 year old. Seriously.

Honestly, to me, its not about being metal, cause being metal is just something that suddenly became the in-thing since Dethklok spoke of such an expression on Metalocalypse. The reason I can't stand fall out boy, or any other "emo" band is simply because they say they have punk roots ... that is not true. Anyone with a true understanding of punk music grasps the concept that it's not about making radio friendly unit shifters, or poppy love songs, or even emotional songs in the form of pop. It's about going against the mainstream mentality that music has to have a formula and that it has to be on MTV to be "good music". Thats why I hate emo bands and that's why i hate fall out boy. that is my humble opinion and I stand by it till I die.

Take This to Your Grave and From Under the Cork Tree were good. Even Infinity On High had a few good ones. But the new album is weak. This is a case of trying to "elaborate" musically, but instead coming out with empty songs with more complex arrangements. Bands need to start realizing that it's possible to take four power chords and make a master piece out of them.

First of all, Fall Out Boy has punk roots. They also aren't emo. They were a staple of the Chicago scene. All band members were in local hardcore bands. The band did their share of shitty legion shows. They did their summer tour vans. Although it's a shame how they turned out now, you can't deny these guys started off with punk roots.

Because they're not shit and have written some of the best singing melodies I've ever heard.

Okay, the lyrics are mostly crap (seeing as I hate poetry, I don't care), the guitar riffs are too simplistic (but it's a pop-rock band, what can you expect) and the vocal tone is too mainstream for some people (imo a shitty reason not to like them).

But whatever, the awesome vocal melodies make up for it (in any song, the vocal melodies are ALWAYS the most important). If you are serious about writing music, you will study their vocal melodies and ask yourself why they're so awesome and why so many people have them stuck in their heads.

Now, all the haters, gtfo and go back to your *core crap

I hate FOB because they are in EVERY since a portrayal of what we've come to hate as far as TODAY's music world: overhyped, overplayed, all about the spotlight, barely musicians, and going with the trend because it's what everyone wants them to do.

not to mention what everyone else on here has so expertly put it: They SUCK.

About that....

They kinda did their own thing and it just stuck. Not because anybody wanted them to. Look for their interviews they deny having anybody tell them to change their music, they went there of their own accord.

It's okay to not like music, but don't accuse bands of being trend followers when they just got swept up in it and MTV overplays them, The Beatles were on TV all the time and they were the most hyped band in history.

BTW Patrick (the singer) is a really good writer. I bet you haven't heard a single FOB song that isn't a single.

And the everybody else comment... well, hate to break it to you... but that means you're also going with the trend because it's what everyone does. Where have I heard a line similar to that hmm?

Punk's about doing what you want. They want to write catchy tunes, that's cool.

Emo is just a word without a meaning, hyped by the music industry, a lot like grunge.

It's cool if you don't like 'em because you don't like how it sounds, but when it's because of what their 'roots' are, you're one very narrow-minded individual.

1. I have their whole debut album Under The Cork Tree, to try them out...I picked up on them to SEE how they were, like I did with all bands. So ignornace? No. but you...

The BAND interviews and they deny it, the band says this, the band says that.....Yeah, well, they also said that Anna Nicole married out of love, that America wasn't involved with 9/11, and that justice is blind and unbiased.

Don't believe EVERYTHING you hear...just because Pete Wentz says it doesn't mean it's true...Remember, he DID name his kid after a Jungle Book character. Pretty sure that makes him credible...wait, wut?

He's a receiver, but he's having sex with a woman who is now bearing his child. That makes sense.

Anyways, checked.

Or should I say has already had his child.

And according to what I've read (which isn't much, since I am not a fan of Fall Out Boy), Pete has only kissed other men, and has had not engaged in sexual intercourse with any.

it's a weird album, i'll say that. not necessarily bad, just...strange. probably not my favorite though. i just ignore all the hype and their egoes and the music's really not that bad. i like all the other albums about equally because they each have something different to offer.

I don't like Fall Out Boy, but I suppose this is a kind way to give fans the option of seeing whether or not they like the music beforehand to help them decided whether or not they will choose to purchase the album.

they were always mainstream, man i dont know who would like a band like this. their music is terrible. a 10 year old could write music like this, people who are playing guitar are looking up to these guys but they show no technicality or talent in their songs. these young people will be listenin to them and say wow they're soo good when all they play are like 4 chords. these guys have no talent at all. plus u dont need talent to write songs like this. utterly shameful.

You don't need technicality to make great sounding music, they've sold millions of records, and you've sold none. They have millions of fans, and you're just a nobody. So stop slagging off Fall Out Boy if you don't like their music, no one cares about your bad opinion of them.

Wow millions of fans wow how did they get there? Errr being sucked into the modern world of mainstream music where you need NO talent at all none whatsoever. Just throw some lyrics on how much you hate the government or your girlfriend just broke up with you. Seriously what surpasses for great sounding music these days?
Some guys who make great music, with great skill who can actually play guitar are not even getting half of the respect their getting. Where is the world coming to?

All you SOBs who keep bitching about how FOB sucks need to just STFU. They have enough balls to try new things, and stop producing the same old stuff with new lyrics like a lot of people.

pop music is popular amoung the younger generation. just take a look at Paramore, Hey Monday, We The Kings, Metro Station. they're all popular that age group. how can you blame someone for something that's a positive step for his band. I don't think Pete meant to be the front mand of the band. Girls find him attractive, and i'm sure all the gay photographers, and wardrobe people think so too. if you want your music and merch sales to prosper, you have to promote, and give what the people want. it's not all about the musicians in the band. without fans, a band is just a group of people, but with them, they're everything.

musicians are allowed to have whatever kind of influence suits them. take lil wayne for example. he adores Kid Rock. he's his idol, and he even got to perform with him. he does a song with FOB and everyone flips a bitch.

just chill out, accept people for their differences, and like it or don't. there's no need to hate on people. damn you're all stupid...

new album's okay in my eyes. all of the albums have been "okay." FUCT was the best IMO, and TTTYG was a close 2nd. first album was a bit too "unproduced" and the rest were way overproduced. the new pop sound is good for a couple listens but it definitely won't stick like the old songs.

Anyone with a true understanding of punk music grasps the concept that it's not about making radio friendly unit shifters, or poppy love songs, or even emotional songs in the form of pop. It's about going against the mainstream mentality that music has to have a formula and that it has to be on MTV to be "good music". Thats why I hate emo bands and that's why i hate fall out boy. that is my humble opinion and I stand by it till I die.

isn't punk more about not giving a shit about what other people think and playing what you want? and if that just so happens to be what people like.... good for you

I'm not saying they're punk (they're definately not), but fitting punk into some cookie cutter "don't be mainstream to be different" isn't being any different when everyone's doing it.

did you actually know fall out boy existed before infinity on high because you cant go ahead and say its different compared to infinity on high when infinity on high was the point fall out boy went downhill and id say the new album is just the same.

ok i dont know any u, or the guy u dissed, but gees, think about what ur saying...

1. I dont see anywhere that shooshi123 said that infinity on high was their first album

2. Yes, he/she can say that Folie a Deux is different. because that is her/his opinion.

You're allowed to post negative comments on here...just not about FoB, because apparently they're the greatest thing to ever grace music. Just ask any of their 11 year old fans, or any of the mods on UG.com

That being said, my friend made me listen to one of the new FoB songs, and like I predicted, it was just terrible. Yet, it will sell millions and they will get more money while legit musicians still struggle.

you're allowed to have a negative opinion about anyone. you're even allowed to post that opinion in certain ways but stuff like "FoB is teh sukk!!1!111" and "pete wentz should die" aren't going to promote any kind of civil discussion.

those are the posts we warn for not the ones that say stuff like "well I don't really like this album. I've given them a listen and to be honest I can't understand what all the fuss is about." etc.

checked

Ok, well I have listened to Fall Out Boy, and its just watered down, generic pop-punk. One thing I really don't get is why is Pete Wentz the most famous one? You can't even hear his bass (except on the beginning of songs like Dance, Dance) but that is so generic its horrid! He only plays one string and mutes the top three! His bass has a freaking bat with a heart on it! WHAT THE HELL???

They do have talent, just because they don't have blistering solo's in each of their songs, doesn't mean they have no talent. They wouldn't have gotten where they are right now if they didn't have talent. Patrick creates orginal, great sounding tracks, I'd love to see you create something better.
And artists like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (if that's what you like), of course they get respect, they just have a different fan base (such as yourself). So you don't like Fall Out Boy, why bother to read an article about them? Or even post your unwanted opinion about them?
