The View, the first single from Lou Reed and Metallica’s Lulu project has already proved to be one of the most divisive collaborations in rock and roll history.
Well, fans (and haters) will have even more to dissect over the next few days: the whole Lulu record is now streaming at loureedmetallica.com. And boy, is there a lot of it.
90 minutes of music to be precise, with three songs, "
Cheat On Me", "
Dragon" and "
Junior Dad" all pushing past the 10 minute mark. In fact, the latter of those clocks in at a mammoth 19:29.
The full track listing is as follows:
01. Brandenburg Gate (4:19)
02. The View (5:17)
03. Pumping Blood (7:24)
04. Mistress Dread (6:52)
05. Iced Honey (4:36)
06. Cheat On Me (11:26)
07. Frustration (8:33)
08. Little Dog (8:01)
09. Dragon (11:08)
10. Junior Dad (19:28)
The "Lulu" project has caused no small degree of controversy amongst Metallica fans concerned about the direction that the band is taking. Guitarist Kirk Hammett has stated in interview that the record should not be judged by "heavy metal standards":
"We were all out of our comfort zone, and because of that, we came up with stuff we wouldn't normally come up with. It's largely an artistic endeavour for ourselves. And we're just inviting everyone else along for the party. This is something that most people won't be expecting from us. All I have to say is don't judge it by heavy-metal standards and maybe you'll understand it better."
This is not the first time that Lou Reed or Metallica have released albums that have divided their fan bases. Lou Reed’s art rock experiment Metal Machine Music received a critical drubbing on its release in 1975 from all but Creem Magazine’s Lester Bangs who proclaimed it "the greatest record ever made in the history of the human eardrum." Metallica’s 2003 St. Anger, meanwhile, is often equated to a therapy session rather than a heavy metal album.
LouTallica will make their live debut on Jools Holland on November 8th.
