According to Blabbermouth.net, soul-pop star Macy Gray has recorded a version of the Metallica classic "Nothing Else Matters" for a new covers album, "Covered", which is due out March 27 via 429 Records. The collection also includes versions of tunes by such artists as Radiohead ("Creep"), Kanye West ("Love Lockdown"), Yeah Yeah Yeahs ("Maps") and My Chemical Romance ("Teenagers").
Video footage of Macy Gray performing "Nothing Else Matters" during a recent concert can be seen below.
"Covered" track listing:
01. Maps (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) 02. Wake Up (Arcade Fire) 03. Nothing Else Matters (Metallica) 04. Teenagers (My Chemical Romance) 05. Here Comes The Rain Again (Eurythmics) 06. Creep (Radiohead) 07. Bubbly (Colbie Caillat) 08. Love Lockdown (Kanye West) 09. Two Joints (Sublime) 10. Sleep To Dream (Fiona Apple) 11. Sail (Awolnation)
The original version of "Nothing Else Matters" was released as the fourth single from Metallica's fifth, self-titled album, which came out in 1991. The song reached position No. 11 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart as well as top-ten positions on many European charts.
"Nothing Else Matters" was featured as a playable track in the music video game "Guitar Hero: Metallica" and has been covered over forty times by a host of different artists, including Staind, Shakira, Bif Naked, Die Krupps, Rev Theory and Apocalyptica.
Why do people still think covering Nothing Else Matters is big news? One of Metallica's softest songs they have ever written. Admitedly, for a guitarist it's quite impressive to be able to pull it off but any generis pop singer seems to be able to lay claim to a cover of it. At least do something interesting:
i think the song sounded quite good for her style of singing, but i didnt like it because they took out one of the main parts off the song which was the clean guitar from the original. If your going to cover this song you should always include that clean guitar melody, either with a guitar or piano, it just has to be there.
wait one more thought..... why do washed up shitty singers who's only talent is to act weird and sing in a quirky odd voice think that by teaming up with a multi successful band will give their pathetic career a lift? macy gray get a comb and a roll of duct tape. i'm so sick and tired of these jackasses using other peoples music to get rich..... write your own songs people if no one buys it go work at home depot.
What the hell is going on with pop artists (especially female pop artists) wanting to cover Metallica? Or going public about how they "love them" or "are big fans"? Don't get me wrong, anyone can love Metallica, I do, not discriminating, just the onslaught of pop stars doing it all of a sudden makes me angry that they think they can get "cred" or whatever by doing that
you either love or hate macy. i think her voice works here...but yeah. people need to stop covering this song. there are plenty of other metallica songs to choose from

Can I just say that if you think Metallica are anything but washed-up, then quit kidding yourself haha
God... That stereo spread on the video is giving me a headache.
Actually better than I expected. Not something I'd pay money for, but I don't think I exactly wasted my time watching it. I definitely could have done without it in my life, but hey, I was making coffee anyway lol.
Actually guys, even though its not really my thing, and the guitar tone isn't really "desirable" its still a respectable cover. The song is very jazzy and even though she cant sing, its the grittyness in her voice that adds that whole bluesy jazzy texture. Pretty cool if you ask me, better to cover something your own way then to just reproduce the same sound someone else has already presented.
That is the most A.D.D cover album I have ever seen
What the hell does that even mean?
I guess captain tried to imply that it's so varied and all over the place.
Two things though:
1) I think you mean ADHD.
2) Still wouldn't make a lot of sense. That's like calling Adele's album bipolar or Pet Sounds schizophrenic. I get what you mean but it just didn't work.
It does have bizarre variety though.
i had a chance to meet her back stage at a lenny kravitz show.. and she was so mean for no reason to everyone, ill never support anything she does cause of that! there so many artist covering metallica or other majortity of bands with white fans cause they just want them to listen to there music and collect there money. but whatever its retarded.
cool arrangement...I really think Mr Lou Reed should take singing lessons from Macy...that amateur backing band is very amateur...guitar solo was pure vomit..ugh time fore a lineup change

In music you shouldn't have to do anything. Music isn't just about guitar even if its a 'guitar song.'.
I've liked Macy Gray with her quirky crackhead antics since she debuted. She's put her spin on it and it sounds good. Better yet, the fact she's not dressed in leather, flashing devil horns and doing the Elaine dance like a certain Disney kid suggests she's only covering it and not doing this for cred.
That album tracklist is all over the place and I wouldn't mind listening to a version minus track 8.
why does everyone always cover nothing else matters especially the gay bands. if ur gonna cover at least do something good like Damage Inc. or Harvester of Sorrow
Hmm, usually if you're putting out a cover album, its covers of music that influenced you, like Metallica did with Garage Inc., but In Macy Gray's case I don't think Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Metallica or MCR would be applicable. I think shes just tryin' to preach a different choir here.
As for that cover, I've heard better and worse, nothing special there.
1. I love Macy Grey's voice so I don't get the comments about her voice.
2. I know she smokes a lot of weed, but I think everyone throwing out crackhead comments sounds really racist.
3. Everybody talking about the guitar solo hurt my feelings because it sounds like the solos I write. Though the guitar tone throughout was pretty bad and the guitar at times sounded slightly out of tune.
Nice tracklist, and I love her band (or at least the one she had years ago). I wish someone would cover a Radiohead song that isn't Creep though. I love the Mark Ronson/Phantom Planet cover of Just. Wish people would do more of that.
That was a terribly sloppy guitar solo, I'd expect more from a professional
Not too bad a cover overall, although like people are saying it's breaking no new ground really. NEM seems to be the go-to tune for pop singers wanting to seem more 'edgy', for some reason
metallica should never be that close to MCR
They both start with M, and my playlist is alphabetical. Where else would it go?
well played my friend...
Theres a perfect way to not have Metallica and MCR close together on your playlist.....have you guessed it yet? Not have MCR there at all.
Just my opinion
