'Maiden Heaven' Audio Samples

World-exclusive performances from Metallica, Machine Head, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Dream Theater and Devildriver are among the tracks featured on Kerrang! magazine's latest collection — "Maiden Heaven" — which features bands covering tracks from Iron Maiden's legendary career. The CD will be given away free with Kerrang! issue 1219, on sale July 16.

Speaking exclusively to Kerrang!, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told the magazine how much respect the Bay Area thrashers have for the Brit metal masters.

"Iron Maiden are 10 percent cooler than every other band," says Ulrich. "From their relationship with their fans, to their album covers to their stages, to their live presentation, to their photos — whatever they did was always cooler than what everyone else did! I have always had an incredible amount of respect and admiration for them and obviously getting a chance to be part of this CD feels like that has come a full circle. We played 'Remember Tomorrow' as it was basically the blueprint for songs like 'Fade To Black' and 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)', and some of the more epic ballady type of songs that METALLICA had done later. We had so much fun jamming with this! We put a bit of an intro on it, to give it a bit of a Metallica stamp, and we are super pleased with how it has turned out."

Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn is equally excited to be a part of this project.

"When I was a kid, Iron Maiden were a very big deal to me and the influence they had on MACHINE HEAD has been huge," he reveals. "We decided to cover 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' for this CD because it's just such a great song, in fact it's a classic! I just love the way the vocal line goes up and down, so dramatic."

Metal heroes Trivium, are happy to admit their own brand of heavy riffage could never have existed without Maiden's worldwide influence.

"Iron Maiden helped create what we know as heavy metal," states frontman Matt Heafy. "Their influence can be heard on classic and contemporary bands alike; their fanbase spans across the youngest and newest of heavy music recruits all the way to the diehard, life-long metal elite. We chose to play the track 'Iron Maiden' off their first album, as the song that screamed out our love for them musically, and we knew it would be a really fun song to jam out in the studio. It was an honour to be able to play one of Iron Maiden's tracks and have the opportunity to contribute to this amazing CD. We hope everyone has as much fun listening to it as we did making it!"

Meanwhile, Avenged Sevenfold — who will be supporting Maiden at their upcoming Twickenham Stadium show on July 5 — say they are "honored" to be part of this Kerrang!-arranged tribute.

"Maiden are by far the best live band in the world and their music is timeless," says vocalist M. Shadows. "This also gives us a chance to expose this great song to some of our younger fans who maybe aren't as familiar with Iron Maiden."

The arrival of Kerrang!'s "Maiden Heaven" CD coincides with Iron Maiden's European leg of their Somewhere Back In Time World Tour — and follows on from the release of their own collection "Somewhere Back In Time: The Best Of 80-89".

"Maiden much appreciate and are very flattered by all the time spent on this by a lot of great bands," says Iron Maiden's manager Rod Smallwood, "and would like to thank them, and also Kerrang!, for the honour. Thanks, everyone!"

This is a lack of respect, none of the bands have the BALLS to make a cover close enough to the original tracks. The closest one might be Machine Head'd "Hallowed By Thy Name" all others SUCK!!

Isn't that the POINT of a cover?? If it's gonna sound exactly the same, might as well have been "(song name) #2". What you do with covers is implement your own style into it while still paying respect to the original artists. If you tried to play the exact same song, it sounds more like you're trying to say "yea, this is our song. We played it."

But now that that's out of the way, I'll admit that in my opinion, the Gallows cover sucked, but that's only because I didn't like how it SOUNDED. Not because it was completely different. The A7X and Machine Head covers were good though.

In my opinion, Metallica and Machine Heads covers was the best ones. Coheed And Cambrias version was ok I think. Metallica and Machine Head gave me a little "Maiden" feel from listening to their versions. I didn't like the little sample from Trivium.

I don't like A7x, and their version of "Flesh Of The Blade" didn't help me liking them better..

I'm a little curios of how Dream Theater's cover will sound like..

Guys, you need to understand that it's a tribute album. Of course they can't outdo Maiden- it's a homage to the very music that they can't outdo. Coheed's and Trivium's and all that may sound lame compared to the real songs, but of course they're gonna sound like them and not Maiden.

If you want songs that sound like Maiden... then listen to Maiden.

i think all those samples sounded really good, bar the gallows one, but i wasn't expecting too much from them really. good band, but not for a maiden cover. I especially liked the Coheed & Cambria and Machine Head samples!
i will be interested to see how Fightstar handle Fear of the Dark

Yeah Coheed really butchered The Trooper, it sounded all whiney, Metallica was the only decent cover so far.

You can't truly judge these covers yet, but I'd say Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold sounded the best. Wtf Trivium? Keep your poor attempt at screaming out of maiden!
Machine Head's cover is also very solid. Coheed's is...interesting..haha.

I must say, I was impressed with the excerpt Metallica's cover. It sounded very much like a track from Load/Reload but it sounded tight and the first two notes of the solo sounded pretty nice and smooth tone wise (alright it's two notes but still).

Oh and I'm dying to to hear Dream Theater's cover. God this issue of Kerrang! magazine is gonna sell some serious copies (I've never bought it before but this issue there is no doubt, I'm buying it.)

@ tannerrob. the sense of a cover is NOT to imitate a song but to interprete it on your own bands way! everybody can imitate a good song but give it the personal note of your own band is hard

Avenged Sevenfold - I quite liked it, sounds canny, iv not heard the original though so i cant compare
Coheed - im a massive fan of these guys anyway so yna lol, cover was a bit different from what i was expecting, hopefully itll still be good though
Machine Head - i ****ing well loved this one lol
Metallica - Legends covering legends = awesomeness
Trivium - i actually like this one, if this is any indication of the new album then im regretting the nasty things i said about them following the crusade lol
no offence to the people who liked it but Gallows cover was awful, i liked the energy on it but i just cant get away with Gallows to be honest, there not my cuppa tea at all lol

As a massive maiden fan i have to give all these bands respect for doing they're best. Heres my thoughs on the samples.

Metallica - Remember Tomorrow ; This is pretty awesome, its got a strong metallic twist to it and i like how they play it.

Avenged Sevenfold - Flash Of The Blade; This is probably my favorite. its such an underatted song and A7 have done a great job. I dont see how people can think it sounds horrible, it sounds just like the old one. love it.

Coheed And Cambria - The Trooper; As the trooper has always been one of my favorite songs to play, i hate coheed for playing this song the way they have. synthesizers? piss off.

Gallows - Wrathchild ; No comment, iron maiden didnt go punk for a reason. this track reenforces sir steve harris' descision back in the day.

Machine Head - Hallowed Be Thy Name; this is great, i would have prefered them to cover the modernized version but it is still an example of great playing

Trivium - Iron Maiden. ; no human has the right to butcher the signature song like this. this is the song eddie appears for. It is sacred to millions of people that have seen maiden live. It is a disgrace.

wow would you guys make up your minds? first people trash the song because its not the original and then you trash it for them not putting their own spin on it. Trivium put their own spin on it by using dbl bass and screaming; A7X put their own spin on it; Gallows put their own spin on it. All the bands did the song as how it would've sounded like if they themselves would've recorded it. So stop comparing it to the original. there's a reason why the original was so good.
