It’s been a bumper week for fans of Georgia based metal behemoths Mastodon. The band has been streaming their new album, The Hunter, in full on their youtube channel since September 20th. Now, the video for the new single from the album, ‘Curl of the Burl’ has also made its way onto the world wide web. Needless to say, with it being a Mastodon video, it’s pretty weird...
According to NoiseCreep, the video was directed by Roboshobo, famed for working on clips for Metallica and The Donnas, and based on a concept imagined by the warped mind of drummer Bran Dailor. Featuring magic mushrooms, saucy loggers and mad deer... basically, you’ve got to see it to believe it.
The Hunter was produced by Mike Elizondo, famous for working with Fiona Apple and Dr. Dre, as well as heavy metal mainstays Avenged Sevenfold. In an interview with Noisecreep, Dailor explained that the record was something of a departure from their previous efforts, describing it as "a really super-heavy Led Zeppelin or something." The drummer also noted the change in song writing dynamic on the record:
"I think it's a little more collaborative, with everyone chipping in. Brent has a lot of great stuff. [Guitarist] Bill [Kelliher]'s got a lot of cool riffs, too. There are so many, it's hard to know which ones we're gonna use. But we go in and jam all the time and record stuff. Then we sort it out later."
Mastodon’s US tour in support of the record begins on October 25th. Also on the bill are The Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang. The Hunter is released in download and physical forms on September 26th.
