Metallica: 'Fly-On-The-Wall' Studio Footage

New "fly-on-the-wall" footage of Metallica in the studio working on its new album has surfaced on the MissionMetallica.com web site and can be viewed here: May 27, May 28.

As previously reported, Metallica has tapped Greg Fidelman — an engineer/producer who has worked with current Metallica producer Rick Rubin on albums for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, System Of A Down, Slipknot and Audioslave, among others — to mix the CD, which is due out in September.

During a May 14 interview with The Pulse of Radio, Ulrich said that the group hoped to wrap up work on the album in time for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. "It's pretty close," he said. "We've got four studio days next week to just patch up. If there's a last minute, you know, 'that needs this...' or — but pretty much done. Yeah, it's pretty much done. And then they start mixing the week after."

Lars also took part in a conference call on May 15 to promote this year's Bonnaroo festival, which Metallica will headline on June 13, Ulrich told reporters that Metallica recently met with a graphic designer to begin planning the new CD package, though there's no confirmed title for the album yet and the songs still have working names.

"We sort of promised ourselves that unlike all the records we made in the '90s, [which] were just completely stressed-out and just nutty, that we were gonna try and have a little more sane environment — and we've actually, surprising mostly to ourselves, been able to keep to that," Ulrich said, according to Billboard.com. "We've pretty much finished the music now, so all the next level stuff is just starting to go down."

Ulrich said Metallica wrote 26 songs for the new CD but ended up finalizing about 14 of them with producer Rick Rubin. A total of 11 have actually been tracked for the album, though Ulrich said "length issues" might mean one more has to be eliminated.

"These are long songs ... we're talking seven-minute, eight-minute, nine-minute nutty-ass songs," Ulrich revealed. "We don't make them long or short on purpose; you just kind of do what feels natural. We're not really gonna edit them, (so) we're gonna lose another one at some point in the next month or so and probably end up with 10."

Ulrich described the material as "definitely pretty all over the place. There's a lot of variation, a lot of fast, slow, melodic ... kind of hardcore, nutty super-fast speed stuff. It's a little more like how some of the earlier records were a little more dynamic within the songs."

The band next plays the Bonnaroo festival in mid-June, a series of European festivals, and the newly configured one-day Ozzfest this August in Dallas.

GTFO UG! St. Anger didn't suck. The songs on the album were awesome... its just Metallica could have done so much better so everyone says the album sucks. Had it been released by anyone other than Metallica everyone would have been saying "So and so's new album St. Anger is amazing!".

Also most bands take three, four, sometimes five years between albums. The bands that release an album every year or two are always regurgitating the same exact songs and throwing different names on them... but hey if you like listening to mediocre and unoriginal stuff then thats your call.

At some level, I agree with you. It seems like it's pretty much just work for them. You know, it seems that they don't even come up with riffs at home, or in their free time for that matter, but when it's "time to work" at the studio or touring. I've gotten the image that they don't write music for the joy of writing it, but for the sake of writing it.

BUT, if it'll be good, then who cares about that. Why should musicians get a different treatment than other artists, like painters or writers?

And yes, the last batch of songs sucked in my opinion as well.

I agree with you 100% on the fact that you cant rush making an album. On the other hand, St. Anger didn't suck, but it was fairly dissapointing. And thats just because it WAS Metallica. everybody expected more from them.

Music isn't just created, it's built, out of harmonies and melodies and things. You might have inspiration when it comes to doing that but you can also do it as a purely logical exercise using just your music theory knowledge. I think the best approach comes somewhere between the two, especially for established acts. Also, just because it doesn't come easily, doesn't mean it isn't worth coaxing out. This thing about the "wrong reasons" is, frankly, nonsense.

ALOT of great bands take years to release albums. Granted St. Anger sucked, but they knew they were trying something different. Look at TOOL for instance, they take many years to put out an album, and all of them are a little different, and all quality and natural. On the other hand, look at Static-X, they released material every year and a half or less with their albums, and their songs ended up very forced and all similar sounding. Dont get me wrong, Push It is one of my favorite metal songs, but... bands who let the music go and take care of itself have much better albums.

It takes time to right music. Especially if you have to be loyal (or are atleast trying to be loyal) to your sound or "genre."
You can go out and write 55 songs but I GUARANTEE you that not all 55 are going to fit together...I cant sit and come up with 12 perfect metal tracks instantly....No one can

Music isn't just created, it's built, out of harmonies and melodies and things. You might have inspiration when it comes to doing that but you can also do it as a purely logical exercise using just your music theory knowledge. I think the best approach comes somewhere between the two, especially for established acts. Also, just because it doesn't come easily, doesn't mean it isn't worth coaxing out. This thing about the "wrong reasons" is, frankly, nonsense.

In my opinion, artists should strive to be constantly innovating, in terms of their sound or style. In other words, they should constantly be improving on or at least creatively progressing their music. That's why I really admire bands like Tool, as well as the intellectual aspect of the music.

I'm not trying to come off as condescending or pretentious, but this is just my current view of music. While Metallica has put out some amazing albums, it seems like this new one is just a rehash of their older material (as Hetfield said, it's between Justice and the black album). But I'd take a Metallica rehash over much of the current music scene any day.

Its also important to take into consideration that the snippets of the songs we've heard probably arent even mixed properly yet. As far as I know mixing started last week or this week and the clips were posted about 2 weeks ago. Unless that Greg guy works EXTREMELY fast then we'll have totally different sounding songs coming up!
