Metallica have just released the first single off their upcoming album, Death Magnetic. The epic track is entitled "The Day That Never Comes" and it's now available through iTunes.
The band recently filmed a video for the track with Danish film director Thomas Vinterberg which will premiere soon.
Check out the track which is now streaming on Metallica.com at this location or on the band's MySpace.
" The Day That Never Comes" is also available through iTunes.
Death Magnetic, the new album from Metallica, will be available worldwide Friday, September, 12, 2008.
In other news, Metallica are set to headline the first day of the Leeds Festival tonight, August 22, with a set on the Main Stage after Tenacious D and Feeder.
Also, the metal veterans have confirmed that they will play a gig at London's O2 with tickets priced at £5. The September 15 show coincides with the release of Death Magnetic. It will be preceded by a concert at O2 World in Berlin, where tickets cost 10€.
"Because this is a celebration, tickets prices will be, shall we say, 'retro'," said the band in a statement. "Only ten Euros for Berlin, five pounds in London! And the best part is that all the proceeds from the sale of tickets will be donated to local charities."

: It's good people, listen to the song as a whole not just as a Metallica song and the fact that it's not exactly like old Metallica.
Listen to the lyrics, the solos, Jame's impressive vocals, the riffs, drumming (well not soooo much), but still. This song is amazing, although it is a bit much like Fade to Black but then again isn't Fade to Black old Metallica o_0.....which is what everybody wants right?POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 10:29 am / quote |

: Yeah, excited about it. The new song is pretty cool - the drums sound too loud, and too much snare, but that's ok. I can deal with that. It's just 8 minutes of wicked riffs. Very good!!
So insanely stupid crazily excited about the new album. I'd love to go see them at the 02 Arena as well - they were amazing at Wembley and I bet they're better now!POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 10:34 am / quote |

Well I think it's better than his really annoying tinny snare drum. This snare isn't too bad, the other one was ****ing unbearable IMO. The again, this is only a Myspace quality single, so who knows.

: well...
quite a deception, the clean part is very promising but it falls flat on its face, no memorable riff, nothing that makes you wanna grab your guitar and learn to play it.
Soloing is just awful, sounds like a collage of Hammet's past work and judging by the sound he even got his Tube screamer back to get that thin screechy shitty solo sound he had back then.

It's ok, not the best metallica song ever, I've only heard once but I think it's got the Fade to Black song structure and sound, which is good because it's about as good as fade to black IMO (Fade to black wasn't that great) so this just means old metallica are back.POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 11:11 am / quote |

: I only heard this off of Youtube so far, but what I think is the first half is awesome, and then the second half feels rushed...I feel like it's too "stop and go", and like they were trying to fit too much into the end of it. The drums were WAY too loud in the version I heard. But again, I wouldn't say the version I listened to was Hi-fi or anything. I'm sure the track off the CD will sound better...I really hope the drums are quieter, or I'll be a little bit disappointed.
That being said, I did enjoy the song, and the first half of the song was just epic.POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 11:20 am / quote |

Thw whole thing sounds like The Unforgiven. Still it starts kicking into the badassery at about 4 minutes but I think Hetfield could have done alot better on the vocals. "Love is a four letter word!" Wtf is that?

: It's a pretty good song. IMHO, with the title of the song being "The Day that Never Comes", the song structure works with the theme. Seems to me the theme is about never doing what you set out to do (because you keep procrastinating), the pacing (slower to fast at the end, with a bit of confusion about 2/3rds of the way through), reflects life almost perfectly, including the abrupt ending. It took a couple of listens to get it, however.
I agree about the slightly muddy production, but I also attribute that to the software, not the production quality.POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 11:30 am / quote |

Hetfield still has his lyrical integrity. As for the guitars... IMO, they sound like a ballzier version of the Garage Inc. tone (which im a fan of). At full quality the song should sound awesome.

also, I agree that the drums are to loud and i doubt that this is the final master thats gonna be on the album, but i kinda like them loud.

: In the beginning Lar's drummming killed the mood of the guitar. Then it was like Lars raised the volume on his drums and lowered everyone else. Only until the end his drumming became tolerable, but that was only because there where some machine gun riffs.
James vocals still had that Load/Reload style. It was fine, but I couldn't help but think he could have changed it up a bit.
Kirk's guitar was great, but lacked Metallica's song-defining riffs, even St. Anger and Frantic had a defining riff :/. The guitar also had a surf thing to it with a bit of that Middle Eastern thing he was talking about I liked that.
None the less, it's a good song, but I fear they are trying too hard to please the annoying metalheads.POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 12:47 pm / quote |

the vocals are more appealing as he kinda sounds a little more "younger" (kinda like alternative or something) instead of some old guy with a scratchy throat
i think the intro is a little too long and the song as a whole is a bit too long but whatever it's still good
a little poppy but so are all singles

But if there were at least some solos in there, I think it would have been better. So now that we hear Kirk shredding it up again, that's a huge plus! As far as the rest, it wasn't horrible. It has an old school kind of feel to it that's nice to hear from the boys, but I still feel like it's missing some depth to it. I don't know, I can't really explain it. : All I have to say is this:
Stop living in the f***ing past. Metallica will NEVER, I repeat: NEVER sound like they did in the 1980's. Get over it. If that's what you want, go listen to THOSE albums.
Everyone here seems to be judging this song based on the sole fact that it's from Metallica. This song, if released on another band's CD would do great. Stop thinking about whether it "sounds like Ride, or MoP, or Kill Em All". Just listen to the god damn song.
I have to agree, the drums are loud. The production is bad too, but I highly doubt that it's the final product. I mean, come on, listening to a song off myspace is usually pretty muddy.
Anyways, I liked the new single, I thought it was great. Going to buy the album as soon as it's released, and I don't think I'll be disappointed.POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 02:31 pm / quote |

The Day That Never Came is also disappointing. I think Metallica has forgotten how to be Metallica. It's one thing to change your direction and try new things, but this is like Metallica took the riffs that weren't good enough to make it onto previous albums and decided, "Hell, why not use them?"

: Ok a couple of quick points....
1. Load and Re-load were probably metallicas most musically advanced albums. Everything changed at one time though and it was almost like metallica became another band and i don't think people were ready for that....hair cuts, logo, mainstream, sound

quite a deception, the clean part is very promising but it falls flat on its face, no memorable riff, nothing that makes you wanna grab your guitar and learn to play it.
Soloing is just awful, sounds like a collage of Hammet's past work and judging by the sound he even got his Tube screamer back to get that thin screechy shitty solo sound he had back then. |

In the beginning Lar's drummming killed the mood of the guitar.
None the less, it's a good song, but I fear they are trying too hard to please the annoying metalheads. |
I was thinking the first time i listened to this song that Lars kinda ****ed up the time and mood of the guitars he was playing with but he quickly got back into the vibe after that one beat thank god! i will also agree that lars is far from being called the best drummer but at least he has the desire to try and make good music unlike most bands and he can be arrogant but i still think he's awesome! anyways this song is very awesome! The first melodic solo was amazing in my opinion and really reminiscent of Iron Maiden but the second one was not really that good (kind of like Kirks usual solos...). The second half of the song could have been better constructed but I did like it. I thought the entire song was like a mix of everything they have ever come up with (except st. anger). 2. St. Anger was an experiment that most people feel was unsuccessful. But it was an attempt to be original in a music world where most new music is not original. Megadeth still makes the same old stuff.

: Not impressed. This song is very poorly composed. I mean, its got maybe a cool lick here and there. The intro lick is nice, but on the whole, and especially after the 4 minute mark, its just a mish mash of licks, some metal, some punk rock too.
Also, the drums really suck. Lars' fills are so basic its not even funny. Nice to hear a solo from Kirk, but its very choppy and not the melodic style that we loved in classic Metallica.
Also, the recording itself was piss-poor. Why couldn't they upload the finished version, especially if the album is complete? Unless this is the final version, which in that case, be prepared for a whole lot of suck.POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 07:30 pm / quote |

They're just combining riffs that may be "cool" when standing alone, but together, do not add or relate to the song as a whole. They've had songs with many parts in the past, however they were enjoyable because the transitions made sense. In this song, they don't. It sounds like a demo version of a song, or a song that a band of 17-year-olds would write. I sense them trying too hard to do everything they've ever been known for in this one song (slow ballad, thrash riffage, harmonies, even Kirk's solo as many of you had mentioned sounds like a collage of everything he's capable of doing as a musician). Also, I'm disappointed because there are parts that sound "off" to me. The ending few riffs for example, sound like the guitars and drums are not in synch with each other and they never bothered to make everything "tight." Does anyone else hear this or am I going nuts?

The album is gonna kick everyone ass and all of you trash talkers are going to fall to your knees and praise Metallica as they reclaim their throne as the gods of metal. |

Anyway, this the best stuff I've heard from Metallica in years, I love this song.
Who cares if it's a bit mainstream, it's a ballad. People used to say Fade To Black was mainstream but now it's one of their best songs. If you listen to this not as Metallica trying to be Metallica again (even though this does sound like Metallica ) and listen to it as a song, then it sounds way more awesome.
At least it's not as bad as St Anger, Load And Reload |

Absolutely!!!! And I think it definitely has some earlier Metallica elements to it. I do kind of like it upon first listen, I'm sure it will grow on me. My main concern is the way different riffs progress through the song seems to be poorly constructed. I mean I would expect that from a garage band, but not metallica. Don't get me wrong I definitely like it better than the last 3 albums combined, but I think we need to let go of past Metallica as we listen because lets face it, you can't recreate classic Metallica ( or any band for that matter). There comes a time when you have to move on and try new things or the music will just stagnate. I look forward to hearing the rest of the album. Also Lars uses too much snare, especially during the cool interlude part. He also does the same thing in their cover of Maiden's Remember Tomorrow, so I expect him to do the same on the rest of the new album. Oh well.POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 10:53 pm / quote |

: Guys, are you all completely dull?
Metallica is VERY big on song placement on their CDs. For example, song #1 on most Metallica CD's are slow intros that go into very fast metal (I.e, Fire Fight with Fire, Battery, Blackened, etc)
Song #2 is always the title track, normally one of the singles of the album (Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, ..And Justice For All, etc.)
This pattern always continues for each song. The Day That Never Ends is positioned to be a #6 song, which means, if Metallica really did go back to their roots, this means this song should be compared to songs such as "Escape" from RtL and "Leper Messiah" of MoP.
What does this mean? It means (although many do love this songs), that The Day that Never Ends isn't meant to be that OMFG GO METALLICA song, but as a "ice breaker" because no matter what song they would've released, people would still be complaining for any reaons they can find. Therefore they released one of their less "OMFG" songs to not waste a good song becase of complainers.POSTED: 08/22/2008 - 11:04 pm / quote |

I'm going to overlook the fact that this song sounds much like many of their other songs (nothing new here) and tell you guys what really bugs me about this new song: The first part is a decent start to a song, however goes off into a completely different direction with, in my opinion, parts that have nothing to do with each other (right after second chorus).

I agree with you. I don't know why everyone shits all over Load and Reload. Load's one of my favorite albums of theirs. I love Master of Puppets, it's my favorite Metallica album, but if I had to listen to them play that for EVERY album, they'd get so one dimensional. Almost everyone agrees that St. Anger was garbage..we're the ones buying the CD's, we can be critics on it if we want.
Therefore they released one of their less "OMFG" songs to not waste a good song becase of complainers. |
Umm, if you're talking about The Day That Never Comes, it's track 4, so that means it's the ballad of the album, just like I predicted. So I guess that makes you completely dull. POSTED: 08/23/2008 - 07:57 am / quote |

The song was crappy quality for a few reasons. It actually is at a bad quality, 98-128 compared to the 320 on the CD that we'll get when we buy the album.
Plus, there is no equalizer on any of the things we could use to listen to the song (like, myspace player doesn't have an EQ), so, we were unable to hear it at what it it supposed to be heard at.POSTED: 08/23/2008 - 08:55 am / quote |

I agree with what you mean.
The first 3 albums were all:
"Fuck you to everybody".
The fourth were more:
"Still **** you, but our best mate died"
The next album was:
"Lets look back, lets express what we are feeling"
The next two albums:
"We've gotten over it, we aren't mourning, we're older, we don't have that attitude anymore."
The next one:
"Something is pissing me off again, it's similar, but not the same as 20 years ago."
Now:

I guess there just complaining, because Metallica have hyped that, they were thinking what they would've done if it was 1985.
Of course they don't sound like what they did back then. Hetfield doesn't have his young voice anymore and they don't have the aggression they used to have. : IDK why everyone is dissing this song, its great! It's not Black album, it's not Puppets or lightning, but its great! It's progression towards the good ol' days of Metallica with a little bit of new flair. It's a combination of a lot of things they've done plus something new. I've been a Metallica fan since I first heard them (Enter Sandman video when i was 1) I've listened to and have all their albums, and all the albums are great in their own way. People shouldn't hold a band to one song or style, because evolution is needed and inevitable. Would you really want them to come out with the same crap over and over again? That's why Metallica is still here is because they've changed.POSTED: 08/23/2008 - 03:44 pm / quote |

In the words of two real legends (Sorry Metallica, you've wasted your luster), "You're only as good as your last album." Also, "It's better to burn out than to fade away."POSTED: 08/23/2008 - 03:48 pm / quote |

: So...here's my opinion, not that any of you care:
A. That song was pretty good considering what came before this (i.e: St. Anger) and please please please note this could have been SOOOOO much worse. For example, the drums could have sounded tin-ish and there could have been no guitar solo.
Don't complain. It was a lot better than it could have been.
B. It was a little weird to hear Jaymz go with Kirk on a double guitar solo. It was pretty awesome though considering.
C. This album has some real potential. Keep complaining guys, I won't be reading this until the next update. POSTED: 08/23/2008 - 04:28 pm / quote |

It reminds me of the and justice for all days. this song really reminded me of ONE because it had a slow build up and a kick a solo ending. and in the middle it had lars going at the drums and then the guitar crunch that ONE had where it just got all heavy and kick ass. I hope they keep the rest of the album like this. I think now the real metallica is back.POSTED: 08/23/2008 - 04:43 pm / quote |

: It sounds like different songs crammed together to make one horrendous pile of crap. It started ok... but it just fell apart a few minutes in. Lars is about as unimpressive as ever, the lyrics were terrible, and the solos were typical Kirk.
I hope theres at least one song on this album that I like, the ones that I've heard so far were a step up from St. Anger, but nothing more. It is pretty boring an unimpressive considering what their thrash comrades have brought out this year.
Megadeth's and Testament's albums were aces, this one seems like it isn't building to that.POSTED: 08/23/2008 - 04:46 pm / quote |

I dig this song ... I can understand you all compare this to fade to black/one/sanitarium ... but you know ... they are older now ... they've paid their dues ... they don't have the first 4 albums "fuk you all" attitude because they're 20yrs+ older than that era. This is definately their best work in 10-15 years. I will definately buy this CD. From the previews on youtube I was leaning towards that thought that Metallica would never redeem themselves. They have definately done a great job and I cant wait for this CD to hit stores!!!

: I was kinda disappointed in the song really. I was excited when the radio told me that the song was coming up next and was pretty giddy..then it came on. I guess I was looking for something hard hitting and resemblance to old Metallica.
You would think that after their last album they would of wanted to release a song that was in-your-face, hard hitting - but this was far from it.
The solo?? Come on, this reminded me of the solo Kirk did in the video 'A year and a half in the life of Metallica' where Kirk was working on the solo to the Unforgiven - remember the solo he did then Bob Rock said 'Well not that your 'warmed' up'..yea, that horrible solo reminded me of this one.
I'm a huge Metallica fan and would like nothing more than to see them back on top. So I hope their other songs on the album is better than this one.POSTED: 08/24/2008 - 02:06 pm / quote |

IDK why everyone is dissing this song, its great! That's why Metallica is still here is because they've changed. |

I'm wondering whether you've listened the whole song through. Because after 4' the song gets everything but pop. This part takes me back to And Justice actually, which I consider second best Metallica album (after Kill 'em all)
But I'm dissapointed too. I have the feeling they can do better. I mean the vocals, the intro (really unbearable), it seems indeed a little pop. It's also a relief, because they dare to hit the upper strings again (which wasn't in St. *nger) and Kirk plays solos again. Still I expected something more in-the-face. First impression is important and this is a song that gets better every minute. I think there are many people who gonna hate this because of the first minute.

And I'm getting tired of everyone knocking them and complaining their music isn't what it used to be,
Or it sounds too mainstream. They're just expanding their sound and evolving. They are not a thrash metal band anymore and people will have to accept that and realize that they shouldn't be compared to what they were because they don't produce that type of music anymore, although it is good to see they're starting to go back to their roots on this album compared to St. Anger.I miss the good old days as much as the next guys and I have to agree with the vast majority of Metallica fans kill 'em all to ..and justice for all are my favourite albums but I am also a big fan of everything they've done since then too,

I actually heard some Megadeth-influence in some of the riffs and a lot of sounds similar to the cover material from the Garage, Inc. stuff, but maybe that's just me. I did like the slowed down "Motorbreath" chordal progression as part of the rhythm during the solo, though. Guitar wise, I'm not disappointed in the single. Deftones 84 is right. United Abominations was an incredible album. I still cant stop listening to Never walk alone and Play for Blood. The thing is, Daves voice has become very good now, i mean just listen to him in songs like Blessed are the dead, he can sing way better now and doesnt resort so much to the squeals, where as James Hetfields singing talent has clearly taken a freefall from 20k ft. I always thought James was a phenominal singer, but now Daves better. |
I still think daves voice is like nails on a chalk board. If megadeth just played instrumentals or decent thrash singer they just might have came on top.POSTED: 08/26/2008 - 02:01 am / quote |

: i think its terrible. they're trying too hard, and they sound like dragonforce in the second half of the song where its just jamming with boring riffs and really really really bad solos from Kirk. he needs to improve, badly. POSTED: 08/26/2008 - 06:40 am / quote |

Guys, are you all completely dull?
Therefore they released one of their less "OMFG" songs to not waste a good song becase of complainers.
Umm, if you're talking about The Day That Never Comes, it's track 4, so that means it's the ballad of the album, just like I predicted. So I guess that makes you completely dull. |

: If you can't appreciate the musical value of Metallica's new stuff, at least appreciate the fact they are still around. And the only reason noone likes their new stuff is because you can't do anything but compare it to their older stuff, which was better. Look at it for what it is, not what it should be.POSTED: 08/28/2008 - 01:20 pm / quote |

IMHO this new song is a METALLICA DE-EVOLUTION. Almost a time machine. we get in and take off at LOAD, then we go back a lil farther as the song progresses. Next stop is ...And Justice about half way thru the song. Then it keeps de-evolving to the Kill Em All days with the classic Kirk solo thing. So when you take the ENTIRE SONG in as a whole its like a history of Metailla in one song. - I REALLY LIKE THIS - Sorry all you haters but this is great IMO |
Sorry, but in Kill'em all, the guitarrist was Mustaine from megadeth, not kirkPOSTED: 09/02/2008 - 03:24 pm / quote |
