Metallica Post Second Single

Metallica just released the second single off their upcoming album, Death Magnetic yesterday. Entitled "My Apocalypse," the track is now available for download on iTunes. You can stream it at Metallica.com.

Metallica fans should also check out iTunes where you can also purchase the riveting track “The Day That Never Comes” which premiered last week (read story on UG).
 
Additionally, the band have recently unveiled a new widget that the band will frequently updated with news, a trailer for their MissionMetallica.com fan site, and other Death Magnetic related material. The widget can be embedded onto most social networking sites and blog applications. The widget is available here.

Death Magnetic will be available everywhere on September 12th.

In related news, the band's members had the following to say about the album:

Lars Ulrich: I can honestly say that this album is the best album we could possibly have made. Can I guarantee that people will like it as much as they like our older albums? No, I can't; I can't offer any guarantees. But I promise you that we could not have made a better album.

Kirk Hammett: This album is some of the best music we've made in the past 15 years. A lot of the albums we made post-'Black' album were us trying to get away from a perceived Metallica sound. That was the right thing for us at the time, but we don't feel we haveto do that anymore. And to be truthful, it's fun to play fast, to be heavy. We're now all on the same page with regards to that. I'd even go so far as to say that we even missed playing that way.

James Hetfield: This album has a hunger and a youthfulness about it. We had a new producer, a new bass player… and we worked really hard to get it right. So when you ask me if it is good, if it's really good, I can honestly say, 'Yes, it is!'

Kirk Hammett: I think we're all aware of the danger of becoming a band that exists in the past. I think any band that's been around as long as we have has to face that. But ['Death Magnetic'] is going to prove to people that we never lost our ability to make an album like this. We just chose not to. And I'll stand by those words.

Wow, this track is actually pretty raw. It's not fast, but it's thrash. I don't mind it, it's something which is just like anger, the words Death Magnetic are in the lyrics, some fast drumming in there. It's not too bad, to be honest.

I definitely think this is the best song I've heard from the new album yet. I still think some lyrics are forced but as for Hetfield's voice, well, the guy is getting old. No offense to him or any fans but the older you get the more that singing voice changes and it just seems like he doesn't have that same old umph. I just saw them at Leeds festival and james' voice sounded amazing! okay at reading he apparently didn't sound his best, but that was only two days after an incredible, full throttle performance at leeds.

Chorus is pretty cool, wish it could just be extended, but besides that, good. Cyanide almost reminds of a combo between load and and justice. I dont dislike it all that much. my least favorite is the day just becaus i wich metallica could do something a little different with the song arrangements. Its a carbon copy of the song form to fade to black or one of their ballads. Plus, im not a huge fan of his vocals on that. Doesn't mean its a bad song though.

i sincerely believe that this will be the best metallica album since the black album. there will be no way that this album will survive comparison to ride, puppets, justice, and even black, but i'm not sure what else everyone here is expecting. was anyone REALLY expecting an album that would be just as good as those were? it's impossible. some of us are too young and just grew up listening to classic metallica without ever "experiencing" it as it unfolded in the 80's. everyone also has to take into account james' voice. it can't and won't be like it was 20 years ago.

as far as the lyrics and actual music is concerned, if you don't enjoy it, that's just an opinion, just like mine here. i can't fault you for that, but don't let the good and bad memories taint what should be an ejoyable album. i can already tell there are quite a few people who would agree with me on this. as for the others, well...you still have kill, ride, puppets, and justice to listen to...

I only have a few qualms about it...I watch the 'One' video, and James's voice is starting to show signs of wear, it's just not as gravelly as it used to be, imo.

But this is just a well-crafted thrash song by one of the pioneers of the genre. The riffage is tight as ****! It really pisses me off when someone says "They're just ripping off themselves," hey, guess what, kid? EVERY band on those T-shirts you buy at Hot Topic ripped off Metallica!

No, this song is extremely similar to slayer, as far as the vocal patterns, guitar work, and drums and the solo...all are extremely similar, well, the same as how slayer has been doing it.

IMO, I dind't like the day that never comes, cyanide is ok, this is great though.

Master Of Puppets and Damage Inc. had brilliant thrash lyrics, but in Hit The Lights the lyrics were almost ridiculous. Metallica has had so many songs with brilliant lyrics.

The song is definately the best song yet, but I'm hoping it's not the best from the whole album. I still want more songs that are thrash, even more so than this.

Doesn't really remind me of any song, but I'm happy about that. This is a heavy f*cking, in your face song, and much better than the single! think of it this way, this is the last track on the album, which means it is basically a b-side track. Just imagine how great the other songs will be. Metallica is back, no doubt about it. Perhaps the only downfall of this song is the chorus.. but ITS THE LAST SONG ON THE ALBUM. Ok:
A. Metallica sounds really tight. Their sound is somewhat different than what they normally use, but it's a step in the right direction from St. Anger
B. Their sound is a LOT like ...And Justice For All. A couple parts sounded like Blackened and a couple of the riffs were straight from Disposable Heroes.
But, the point is, they're doing better than they were a while ago.

It would have been so much better if they just got rid of Lars instead of letting beating on that snare drum like an idiot. The lyrics are pretty crap. It would help if they made more than one riff, it's alright for the intro, but when it's repeated for the entire bloody song, it just starts to go stale, and it does that pretty bloody quickly.

I havn't been able to get in to any of the new songs, I just find them very poor, for similar reasons that I don't like this one. They have hyped the whole album up, and as usual, the fanboys have taken the bait, I'm pretty sure they could cover Brain Stew by Green Day, throw in some palm muted open E's and rename it, and you would still say "OMGZ METALLICA IZ F***ING BACK GUYS ;D;D"

They said the new album would be a return to their old ways, last time I checked they were no where near as bland, and unoriginal as this. Everytime Lars lies,a kitten dies, and lots of kitties have died in the hype of Death Magnetic. I was a little worried when the song started off that this was gonna go into a St. Anger style track, but then it really kicked in especially around the guitar solo, which is definetely classic Metallica style.

anyway, They tune in Eb live because hetfield can't reach the notes.

Also, so what if there is a riff being played over and over; it's called a "Verse riff" and "Chorus riff", which is done for every freaking song (I don't hear people complaining about how they keep repeating the same riff for the verse of, say, Blackened or Metal Militia).

I swear, Metallica has some fans. They keep pining for Metallica to "write more thrash" and then when they do, they try to find something wrong with it, like something as minor as drum production. It's better than St. Anger's production, right?

The guitar was great except for the main riff. James could have changed it up a bit. Also James' voice was really Slayer-like. I blame Rubin for that.

Drums still are a bit annoying. Lars is doing fine though. Maybe it's the newer recording quality that exposes the raw sounds.

I dunno, what I'm getting from The Day, Cyanide, and My Apocalypse, is that Metallica is lost and confused. I blame the fans, if they didn't get so critical of them, they wouldn't be walking on eggshells to make this album.

I think what metallica should do is put out an all instrumental album because some of their best songs in my opinion were instrumentals. Most big rock/metal bands wouldn't be able to pull it off but Metallica probably could. Also, people won't be able to call metallica sellouts or too mainstream for putting out an instrumental album and plus people are saying that hetfields voice isn't what it use to be. Just a thought.

EVERY song that Metallica writes, ever again, is going to be mediocre compared to "Lightning" and "Puppets." It's just BLATANT COMMON SENSE that the band members have gotten older, things have changed, their perspectives and mindsets have developed, for better or [prominently] for worse.

You will never hear another Metallica song that will make you think, "Wow, this is as good as 'One' or 'Blackened.'" It's just not going to happen. It's the same band, but it's two different, extremely distant eras.

I agree with Kirk. They can still write heavy, thrash-oriented music, but they keep with the constant reminder that they are only using their '80s material as REFERENCES and INFLUENCES. They are not trying to re-write "Master Of Puppets."

So far, I haven't thought any of the three -- five, if you count the "New Songs," which I know will not be featured on the album -- were revolutionary. I wasn't expecting them to be. People that are expecting Metallica to re-invent the wheel are always going to set themselves up for disappointment. I love just about -- meaning, there is exceptions -- everything Metallica's ever done, and I support them completely, but the band keeps promoting the reality of not living in the '80s anymore, and even the die-hard fans are overlooking that.

I thought "Cyanide" was great. You can call it a mix of "Load" and "Justice" all you want, it still sounds fresh compared to anything they've ever written. Fresh, as in, hot off the table, not as in better. "The Day That Never Comes" was alright; it wasn't great, but by no means was it bad. Obviously, it doesn't hold a candle to "Fade to Black," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium" or "One," but as I said, anyone expecting it to set themselves up for disappointment. "My Apocalypse" was great ! I wasn't expecting anything from a cliched title, but it really did catch and keep my interest. None of the songs were revolutionary, but they are good songs written by an aged band, nonetheless.

So far i like all the tracks off the album, Cyanide is very different but you can still tell it's Metallica, The Day that Never Comes is epic, a great ballad with a great end section and My Apocalypse is actually fantastic, it's proper thrash/speed metal in the best sense and the lyrics really show the theme of the album title well.

About the quality of the song:
I read on a Norwegian newspaper about why the drums sounds so distorted, the cymbals sounds like broken glass etc. is that they've used a lot of compression to the songs so the songs will be louder when it is on radio.

I don't know if it is true, but it seems to make sense..

I personally love this song. First time I listened to it, I didn't dig the song that much, but after some more listening to the song, it went from quiet good to a awesome track! It has some Kill 'Em All feel plus some Slayer.

If this track isn't the best song on the album, I can't really imagine how amazing rest of the album will be.. I just have to wait 2 weeks..

OK, why are people comparing this song to Slayer? Sure, Slayer is a great band, but they did basically "the Motorhead" and made the same album with different tempos and reversed riffs everything past Seasons in the Abyss.. That statement may seem harsh, but I love Slayer, and I know for a fact that their albums sucked after 1990.. Why Grammys for crap when the gold was 15 years ago? I don't get it.

On another note, I thought "My Apocalypse" was a really bad name and I expected it to be near horrible, but man I forgot Metallica's old order of first song, last song = Thrash. And you know what this song is?

IT'S THRASH METAL.

the mix for both of the new tracks is a little brutal. a drummer MUST have mixed them because the drums are so freakin' loud. especially on "The Day That Never Comes"! It's so mellow for most of the song and the drums stand out like a vocals in a radio pop mix.

both of the songs are quite boring, i find. i was really excited to see what these guys were going to put out and i am less than stoked.

Best since Justice?? No way. S&M was probably one of the best vocal performances i have ever heard, and not just from james. And it's probably the best live performace i have ever heard vocally

mixing is off. and the snares. wow anyone else annoyed by the snares? they sound bad and are overused in the song. overall, it's good but it could sound a lot better if it was recorded and mixed better. and if drums were improved

Just listen to Kill 'em All there are similar riffs there and do you know who is one of Kerry King's influence on guitar? it's Dave Mustaine.. who co-wrote 4 songs on kill 'em all and who played similar riffs at the first years of Megadeth an Kerry King also said that he and Jeff Hanneman used go and watch early Metallica show with dave on lead guitar and he also said that dave's playing and Metallica's sound at that time always infkuenced him... so stop saying it's like Slayer...

Okay, I like the guitars, the solo was pretty cool, and if you listen to it you can hear part of the solo from Whiplash.
Now to criticize... (Sorry)
It just sounds to me like Lars is still stuck in the St. Anger groove to me, don't get ne wrong, I love Metallica and everything, but I just hope the rest of the album is better than this.
But to give them credit, Metallica has some trouble when they try to make a transistion of music style, and for some reason, that's always when someone new joins the band.
