Muse have unveiled their new dubstep-influenced track "Unsustainable". Check it out below.
The track is the second to be revealed from the band's new album "The 2nd Law", which is due to released on October 1 in the UK and October 2 in the US.
The band made the track available to fans last night (August 9) who pre-ordered "The 2nd Law" and it appeared online soon after. Much of the track had already been featured in the trailer the band released when they first announced "The 2nd Law".
Meanwhile, following confirmation this week that Muse will be performing at Sunday's Olympic Closing Ceremony show, the band have shared a photo of their rehearsal. Check it out below.
The photo, which was posted on the band's official Twitter page, shows Matt Bellamy carrying an electric guitar and leading a procession of men painted gold and wearing giant drums on their head.
This isn't a single, UG have just posted misinformation. The actual single, Madness, will be out on the 20th, this is just a little bonus you get by ordering the deluxe edition of the album, just a song off the album.
Oh gosh, kind of enjoyed what I've heard so far but more in a 'that's weird' way, they haven't really been 'real songs', just sort of over the top ridiculousness. I love progressive music and showing off but really hope there's more melodic stuff on the album.
Not a huge fan of dubstep..or I haven't really followed it much..but it's amazing how Bellamy does that with a guitar. He's second only to Morello in terms of guitar manipulation in the past couple of decades.
And this does sound interesting.
Don't know much about buckethead..but Steve Vai is a good guitarist..I just meant manipulate as in innovate and create new sounds. I don't know of anything Vai's done which is slightly innovative..
It can be, but it's not always... It just filters frequencies. You can get filter envelopes etc as a guitar effect, even the wah pedal is essentially a band pass filter.
That was nowhere near as bad as I thought (and probably many others thought) it would be. And you can tell they did this on "real" instruments, which makes it pretty cool.
This has the same problem as that Korn dubstep album. I think it's a cool idea to mix dubstep and rock, but it's like 90% dubstep and 10% rock. If the dubstep was toned down, and it actually sounded like Muse, I think it would have been a stronger song.
The first single is actually "Madness", released on the 20th of August. "Unsustainable" was sent to everyone who pre-ordered the new album as a taster.
In an interview Muse said Madness is a more electronic track, so lacking guitar I would imagine. Whereas they said the album opener "Supremacy" features a "sleazey metal riff" so I'm looking forward to that!
I honestly enjoyed it until the dubstep stuff kicked in at the 1:28 mark. Maybe its just me, but I found everything after that rather annoying. I feel like they could've turned this into a pretty epic sounding prog track if they didn't feel the need to incorporate the dubstep stuff. But then again, my opinion dosen't mean shit. Its their music and they do whatever they want with it. I'm hoping there will be a few tracks on the album more to my liking though.
People need to realize that this was bonus given out to album pre-orders and NOT a single, get the facts straight. Their first single is due out in a week and it IS NOT THIS. That being said, I quite like this.
dubstep is awesome. but i don't like the skrillex-esque generic 'wubwub screeeeetch' dubstep that muse seem to be loving at the moment at all. I think it's terrible.
anyway. I enjoyed the resistance somewhat, and hoped I'd like this but I really don't. There's still the possibility that they're joking I guess...
I just listened to some Burial and some Boxcutter because the only dubstep I've ever heard is Skrillex garbage. It's not bad, but I don't really understand how Skrillex can even be considered the same type of music as those guys. They are more atmospheric and have a way different sound the Skrillex.
The intro was pretty nice (even for me, as I'm not a Muse fan), but what came after 1:30... just did not work for me. Way too generic and boring. And unneccesary, since every part without that stupid robot voice was good.
Agree, that robot stains the song. But I think it's a pretty good song, like Muse meets E.S Posthumus meets dubstep.
It has a very apocalyptic feel to it.
I was sincerely hoping they were joking with the dubstep thing...
I agree Bellamy is a master of guitar manipulation, but this is just... not good, man.
i have an idea...im muse, our last album tanked, people hate us for that twilight song, i cant think of any new ideas, how about we make a song that has no lyrics and its really just us making wierd noises with our instruments....wait, you know what would send it over the top, lets have some news reporter talking about how we're all f#cked....perfect!! this is trash, muse is now irrelevant
Muse are at their best when they're making random noises with their instruments. All their best songs have feedback, pinch harmonics, and a shit ton of fuzz.
I agree with kreiger, buckethead and vai both are amazing and innovational guitarists, but bellamy makes sounds that baffle me to no end how he did it...whereas buckethead and vai usually end up usually using an octave pedal or some other thing that is easily discernable to an extent
It isn't really dubstep, the dubstep fans would call this brostep. Similar to a band saying oh we want to implement some metal into our new album then copying bring me the horizon. Or a band saying we are going to be more rock and roll here is our new Nickleback inspired song.
That is the problem with this song, it is following the bottom of the barrel stuff of a genre I don't even like.
This is trendy nonsense. They just took the word "Unsustainable" and added an effect that makes it sound like a Cylon talking from the old school Battle Star Galactica.

Its called computer technology and a recording studio. This is not rocket science people.
This is ****ing awesome I love that Muse have the balls to try and compete with dubstep, and that they don't care if people hate it they'll just throw it on their album anyways. Good for them
I wish there was some bass to the track to actually give the dubsteppy breakdown part (and the track overall) some power instead of just buzzing guitar and robot vocals. They've had such better breakdowns in the past.
Not bad I really enjoyed the intro with the string section. Seems to me like Muse was experimenting to see what they could come up with. I doubt the album will sound like this song. It would make a pretty cool intro to an album though IMO.
As a fan... i must say its not their best work...
But as someone who followed dubsteb (even though i dislike it, i still follow it so that I know what im talking about) this is not a bad piece of dubsteb music.
the fact that its still made with guitars/bassguitars/drums makes it even better.
luckily the entire album isn't like this, even though the song for olympics wasn't great either, so I don't think this album will be their best. but im still looking forward to it.
Also, the music video was released to those who pre-ordered the deluxe album. It wasn't "leaked," nor was it really "unveiled."
I actually kinda enjoyed the song. Mostly from 1:59 on to the end. Matt's vocals at 2:28 fit in perfectly.
Also, Muse have not "gone dubstep." This is the only dubsteppy track on the album. Calm yo' tits.
Wait for August 20, when Madness, the next single actually comes out. Then listen to the whole album before you bash them. I'd rather have them experiment with different styles of music than have 6 Showbizes.
I am always open for new stuff and I am not against dubstep or even Alternative or whatever, but seriously, this sucks.Toasterbot makes this song more or less ridiculous and his lyrics are also very strange.
I don't get why a lot of people say this sucks, so what if it's not obviously Muse, established artists should be able to experiment beyond their established sound without being bashed by their audience, if you really don't like it, fair enough, not everyone likes the same thing. But if you want to try to appreciate music try thinking about the sounds you're hearing in the music and perhaps maybe realize, oh that's quite interesting what they did there.
Why does everyone give a shit about dubstep or not? I really like the song regardless of what its inspiration was. Sure it has some issues with the structure, but it's probably the first Muse release I've enjoyed in YEARS. They combine the styles really well and give off the apocalyptic vibe without going too far like they did on Absolution.
Stop caring about the genres. If I had never heard of dubstep I would say this was good. If anyone else had done this I would also say it's pretty good.
Outside of that video, the song is useless.
I could MAYBE listen to it while smashing flaming TVs with a sledgehammer, but I'm trying to do that less often.
It doesn't sound like a finished song to me.. I mean it gets good around 20(except for that mostly irritating droid) but then they let that part die and go back to what they started out with. They could've made so much more out of that. But I haven't heard the rest of the album, so..
It's not like the Muse I'm use to hear, and I'd rather not have them change into this, but maybe there will be something on that album worth listening even if it's dubstep-mixed-Muse, if this is the new future of Muse, then so be it.. at least I don't see featuring this DJ, featuring that DJ(correct me if I am wrong).
TBH feels like Lulu is coming out again. Except Muse didn't disappoint as many times as the other guys did but this is going down it seems... How disappointing
Oh god, instead of dubstep fizzling out, more bands keep jumping on its bandwagon, ugh.
I'm one for bands to experiment with different styles of music, but dubstep is completely boring, pointless, and uninteresting after you've listened to a few songs with it. I could never and will never sit through a full album of dubstep. That's worse than Chinese water torture.
I'm not a fan of Muse at all, but if they can manage to use dubstep sparingly while keeping true to the music their fans have come accustomed to hearing, it could turn out to be a solid mesh of musical styles. This song though... I don't yet...
How exactly is this selling out? The probably make more money than a lot of dubstep artists anyways, and even though it's dubstep it's probably the farthest from their original sound they've gotten as opposed to the genericness of The Resistance.
II feels like many people listen to this song the wrong way.
Like "La di da, oh nice a new Muse-song ah I bet this will be a jolly good tune like that Hold you in my arms-song Hehehe )))) Oh.... WAIT A MINUTE! This isnt what the previous songs sounded like. AMAGAD! This is wrooong its so hard being a Muse fan when theyre newest stuff is political and inovative and not about love > WTF Make music like I prefer!!!!"
Its wicked creative and smart just to use the word unsustainable because that is what the future is about, how long can we keep going on living this way, something needs to happen. All the riffs and grooves in the song were crisp and cool playing-style. Fucking respect to Muse. Great song also, his vocals in the middle sounded great. I wanna punch people who say "This song doesnt even have lyrics" The song doesnt need lyrics, its about 1 messege; Unsustainable. The amount of lyrics is apart from the matter. Listen better you spoiled brats!
Lol'd so hard. I can clearly hear words that mean something in this song, so it definitely have lyrics.
If these aren't lyrics we must pretend that poetry readed to musical acompaniament doesn't have lyrics.
Hahahahahaha.
This is why I love Muse - they always explore new sounds and ideas. Even when these ideas aren't brilliant it's always step forward. I have no interest in bands who are repeating same material over and over.
When I heard that Muse was doing a dubstep track, I expected them to do something really experimental with it. But this is pretty much just your basic dubstep track.
This track was clearly produced by a producer who has had little experience with dubstep genre before. I like that Muse have experimented with the genre, but this could have been so much more.
Its..... different... Still, i kind of like it i think. It's definately a song that needs to grow, still i keep on playing the song and it gets better everytime. Im definately not a dubstep fan, but its a very weird song, wich makes it very, very interesting!
I kind of like it. It's not different than most dubstep, but it is pretty good. I think I will like what they are going to bring to this album. I heard that Chris is even singing lead on a couple songs.
I know what they said about them experimenting, and how it was fine, but to be honest I think they're just trying to cover up the fact that they've sold out to dubstep...
How do you even call this a song? I don't understand how anyone can enjoy this. Unsustain-able unsustain-un-sus-sus-sus-you're-unsustainable....****ing stupid.
lol i love how everyone on UG wets their pants when they hear about muse.
this is clearly just a "snippet" "experimental track" whatever you wanna call it - think of it as 'interlude' on absolution or something like that. I highly doubt muse would sacrifice their skill. as any TRUE muse fan knows they cover all spectrums of music. so puhleeze chillax and put your nappies back on.
Honestly I'm disappointed, I thought Muse's take on dubstep would be cool, but the dubstep parts sound super generic and uninteresting, rest of the song is fine though.
even if i have to say that i hate dubstep, i also have to say that this is the worst dub-track i ever listened to. way too slow, sounds like a dubstep from a 10years old
Why do so many people say this isn't a single? It's a song, and they released it; what else do you need for a single? Just because it wasn't released exactly like every other single doesn't mean it isn't one.
