Neil Young’s new album, Le Noise, is due out in a week (September 28), but fans can hear it in its entirety now on NPR.com.
As previously reported, the album features Young performing solo and was produced by Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan).
According to Lanois, it’s a very simple album – “a man on a stool and me doing a nice job on the recording.”
Young wrote eight new songs for the album, although it seems that both artist and producer were more interested in sound then songs.
In a press release, Lanois talked about an electric/acoustic guitar that he’d been tweaking to fit Young’s needs on the new album.
“I wanted to give him something he’d never heard before,” the producer said. “He picked up that instrument, which had everything – an acoustic sound, electronica, bass sounds – and he knew when he played it that we had taken the acoustic guitar to a new level. It’s hard to come up with a new sound at the back end of 50 years of rock ’n’ roll, but I think we did it.”
