The surprise gig at the 300-capacity Studio at Webster Hall acted as a test run for their upcoming album and inevitable tours, with half of the set showcasing the new material. The $20 tickets quickly sold out, with many soon appearing on Cragslist for hundreds of dollars.
The band didn't disappoint with their costume efforts. Billy Joe Armstrong arrived as Jack Skellington from Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas, Tre Cool wore a blonde wig and pink fairy dress, while Mike Dirnt wore all black and zombie make-up.
Rolling Stone say the new music continued the lush arrangements seen in recent albums "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown," with plenty of the usual tight harmonies and big guitar hooks with the lyrics being less about making political opinions than straightforward statements.
After fans patiently enjoyed the first half hour of new material, the band broke in to a collection of fan favorites which sparked a new energy in the crowd.
Speaking about his back catalogue, Armstrong said "People hang onto that sh-t like it's a sacred cow. I say f--k it – cows are meant to be eaten."
The New York gig was filmed as part of an upcoming behind-the-scenes documentary about the as-yet untitled new album.
