Continuing their highly successful 2010, OK Go return this week with the "Extra Nice Edition" of their latest album, "Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky." While most hardcore Go-heads probably already have the original release, of note is a massive bonus disc that includes a handful of demos, remixes, covers and a lengthy interview with "This American Life" host Ira Glass.
First up is "
Skyscrapers (Bristol Version)," which lead singer
Damian Kulash describes as a totally different take than the original. "
We started this as an acoustic version, but it kept pulling us back into a more surreal world," he tells Spinner. "
And we finished it in Bristol, UK, the home of trip-hop, so I think the city crept in."
Second, we have the song "Shooting The Moon," one of the tracks that didn't make it to the final version of "Colour." "[It's] one of the rare songs where we tell a literal story, albeit a somewhat allegorical one," Kulash explains. "It's about an astronaut who has to cover up the secret that his great achievement was actually staged. How awful it is to be everyone's great hope, and know you are lying." And we thought it was going to be about a card game.
Lastly, OK Go pays tribute to the Pixies with a cover of "Gigantic," which finds Kulash trying his hand at a mellow impression of bassist Kim Deal's voice. "[We] recorded this at home with the studio monitors turned all the way up, so the crazy drum effects are actually live feedback from the mix," he says.
The "Extra Nice Edition" of "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky" is out Tuesday via their label, Paracadute Records. The band also promises that fans who purchase it will get access to an online database where they'll continue to add new songs to the album.
