Rare footage of Nine Inch Nails performing in the 1980s has appeared online, prompting frontman Trent Reznor to spill details on the backstory.
Over a series of tweets, Reznor describes how their prank request to appear on a silly TV show backfired, both in the 1980s and today with the internet:
"Many years ago, a young and naive Nine Inch Nails were asked what TV shows they'd be interested in appearing on. As a joke (and likely drunk), they thought of the most absurd choice they could come up with at the time.
"They were then informed their bluff had been called and were actually booked on said show (thanks again Sioux Z). They hopped in their Honda Civic touring vehicle (hatchback) and travelled many miles to (I think) NJ for the big show. They had a laugh making fun of the people, their fashion choices and hairstyles. Life was good.
"Years later, the internet is discovered... There's a moral in there somewhere."
Watch a video of the performance right here. And check out Reznor's hairdo - recognise anything? Reznor sure does, as you can see in the tweet below:
Come to think of it, Skrillex may indeed owe me some publishing on that hairdo...
I don't get what's humiliating about it. They look pretty much like what you'd expect some kikds playing that music during that era to look like, probably cooler actually. They're not responsible for the set of the tv show they're on. The music was surprisingly good.
This Trent gay is the most overrated person in music history. Haven't heard a song from NIN and I don't even want to.
*GUY. That was a typo honestly..
How exactly do you know he's the "most overrated person in music history" if you never listened to anything he's made? Seems kind of like you're a stupid *******.
Also, Trent doesn't seem particularly "humiliated". Humiliation only happens when something irrevocably damages your career.
I'm pretty sure this was one of those situations where the artist was asked to lip/instrument synch to their own song on the show and the artist wanted to humiliate the TV show by making it obvious they were synching. Nirvana did it once and Muse has done it dozens of times.

He plays industrial meta. Who seriously would want to appreciate an industrial metal artist?
He does not play industrial metal. You haven't clearly listened to NIN at all.
Even if he did, it's quite close minded to hate on whole subgenres of metal. It's like declaring "all death metal blows".
This video really took a long time to surface. At the end when Kelly Ripa yells "Let's hear it for Nine Inch Nails! Woooo! They're GOOD”; on the release of the Head Like a Hole single (Halo 3) in 1990, they used a sound clip of that as track.
Nice cut and paste article as usual. Humiliated? UG should be humiliated for copying 75% of the articles they post. So is this similar to when Nirvana was humiliated for lip syncing on the Top of the Pops back in '91? Oh no wait, that was intended to be a joke, just like this. This was obviously lip synced, nobody was trying to hide it. That kind of stuff was acceptable back then. As far as Trent pushing the guitarist off-stage, quite obvious that was just part of the act. When did everyone start hating NIN? I mean yeah, the lyrics are kinda sappy sometimes, but I can think of much, MUCH worse.
how is this humiliating? is it the hair ot the lipsync?
It was over 20 years ago, his hair (i assume) was the trend of his social group and no one could be humilliated by the lipsync, i mean from what i see not even the guitars are pluged in.
I read Trent's comments on this on his Twitter account and from how he's reacted saying the footage "humiliated" him seems to be a big pile of hyperbole. PS Nine Inch Nails which ever part of his career you liked it in was pretty transcendent of genres so anyone should be able to like one song. I'm not reading this again so agree or disagree n'assed.
