While performing solo around New York City, Morris met and began collaborating with producer Page and released a self-titled EP in 2010.
She’d been conscientiously working on her craft as a songwriter, which was acknowledged by ASCAP and the Songwriters Hall of Fame the following year.
The institutions awarded Morris the 2011 Holly Prize, which recognizes new singer-songwriters whose talents honor the legacy of Buddy Holly by way of excellence in songwriting, performing, and musicianship.
It's a pretty good cover for the style of music, and a smooth transition from metal to soul. But while saying that, it's just not for me. Although it can be transferred rather easily it seems, it takes on a whole new light which I'm sure a lot of people will love, but once again it's just not for me.
Doesn't feel quite right listening to this but not because it isn't a metal version. The song is about a person on death row just realising they are about to die. Playing the song at this speed loses thw frantic and desperate feeling that original has (in my opinion anyway).
Still cool to see someone who isn't a metal performer doing a Metallica cover that isn't "Nothing Else Matters".
Props to her for making the song her own, but it sounds nothing like the original, just the same lyrics. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing

Its a good thing - a cover shouldnt be a carbon copy of the original. I think this is really good, I mean Im not going to be rushing out to buy this but I like it when compotent musicians from different genres have a go at covering things that, in theory, shouldnt work.
When she wails during the verses, all I can hear is Amy Winehouse. She certainly had her flaws, but don't we all? If this gal breaks big, I think she owes Amy a lot for opening the door to mass public appeal for this soul crooning revival.
I'm not a fan of the music style but I always enjoy covers that bring together two vastly different musical genres. There need to be more artists like her and less like the others that I shall not name.
While I didn't like or enjoy it, there's no denying that is good. I don't know how much of the arrangement she did, but it is good, and she can definitely sing well. I'm impressed!
I personally think it's an awesome cover. Plenty of emotion, and I think that the lyrics actually work well for the style of music, even if it's not normally what you'd hear in a soul tune.
Well... that was honestly the first time I heard both this version and the Metallica original... I prefer her version, but I guess thats because I like that style of music more...
It just seams when she sings it, the lyrics mean something completely different to how Metallica wanted them to mean, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
when i first say the article title i thought like: goddamnit not another one covering nothing else matters.. didn't quite except this, but i gotta say this is really amazing!

Your nick is "powerslave", and you like her style of music more? Wow...
Interesting choice for a cover, not what I'd expect at all. Sounds pretty good too, I think it's just jarring because its /such/ a different take on it. Like eating an apple that tastes like roast duck, nothing wrong with it, but extremely odd.
I agree that it pretty much is just the lyrics with completely different music, which sparks the debate of whether it's actually a true cover, but damn it's bloody good whatever it is.

I made it five years ago, believe it or not, tastes change (:

Greaat job \m/
I know it shouldn't be exactly the same but I'm just not sure that it should be this different

Wow, didn't expect it to actually be this good. Very nicely rearranged and the lyrics fit surprisingly well, and she deserves respect for not picking one of their mainstream songs like Nothing Else Matters or The Unforgiven.

Where can i find a copy of this? I searched youtube and got nothing.
I thought that was pretty good, and I don't listen to alot of soul music and love the original. If you're going to do a cover I think you should definately make it your own as she has
Very well done.....but, it's just not a soul song, much better as the normal Metallica version! credit to her for doing it though. Same as Lucy Silvas doing Nothing Else Matters, it's good but it's just better as it's original!
im not feeling it; not because shes a bad singer or its a bad song, but because aside from the lyrics, nothing from the song tells me its ride the lightning. ive heard crossover covers of metallica songs (most notably a series of bluegrass covers) and they sound like what theyre supposed to be - bluegrass versions of a metallica song.

What about all those people who did it before Winehouse. She was hardly the first to make it big in this style you know.
Awesome cover! Im not much into soul, but she did a very good job giving the song another dimension. Must say that it cant beat the original feeling, but still...
The only reason half of you are saying this is cool ill check out her other stuff is because she's a girl. If it was a guy doing this you'd all be slating it!
