Static-X: 'Cannibal' Album Stream

Static-X are one week away from dropping the most metal record of their career. Cannibal hits stores on April 3rd and brings the band's sound back to where it all started, hard and fast.

Comprising 12 of the harshest, most stripped-down tracks Static-X have ever recorded, Cannibal also finds frontman Wayne Static & Co. sounding leaner and meaner than they have in yearsa change the vertical-haired guitarist, vocalist and chief songwriter attributes to the back-to-basics approach they took to recording the album. “I think it’s the most metal record we’ve ever made, and it’s arguably the heaviest record we’ve ever made,Static explains.

To celebrate the release of Cannibal on April 3rd, the band is giving you the chance to win an ESP LTD EX-50 Metallic Silver Guitar autographed by the band. Enter here and be sure to pick up Cannibal on April 3rd.

Not bad. Is it me or does it seem like they have moved away from the severe downtuning? The guitar parts have a lot more clarity. If I remember right, didn't they say they had switched to using a different engineer/producer for this album??

Now this is kickass. I'm addicted, have to listen to the whole album right now. Already it blows away Start A War. Unfortunately, I missed out on Shadow Zone, Machine, etc, but I do have a bit of Wisconsin Death Trip. I'm just ecstatic that Static-X is moving in the right direction.

i liked the album a lot, but theres a few elements i think either could have been changed, were done right, or done away with.
1.) The solos were surprisingly all really awesome and fit every song right. Maybe a bit of a jump seeing that they virtually no solos ever to having one on every song(except goat), but I really liked them. And it really shocked me, because i usually dont tend to care for solos all that much.
2.) A LOT OF THE SONGS just seemed a bit repetitive.(with the exception of cannibal, but really even it did too) Not only in structure(how like every single song started with a synth intro into a guitar play off of it or mock of the sounds) but in the riffage. Its something I sorta expect with Static-X, dont get me wrong. But this time they brought it to a new extreme.
3.) Somewhat glad to hear Wayne's older style vox back, but at the same time, i think there were parts that he could have taken a different attempt at how he sang his parts to mix it up. I have always been fond of wayne's voice throughout everything that they have done and i was a bit sad to see that he totally dropped his singing style that he had for the last few albums.
4.) It really ended too quick. And I guess that part of that has to do with the fact that too many songs would have totally oversaturated the album. And I think part of that even has to do more with the fact that a lot of the songs followed the same structure and all.
5.) Maybe it was just me, but Wayne's lyrics have only gotten weirder on this album. I mean dont get me wrong, they've always been a weird bunch, but lyrically i can relate more to him talking of anger than i can him about reptiles and chemical logics. I dont know, I understand wayne knows what he's doing and writes purposefully, but some of the album just sorta had me confused that he could actually write that to a song and expect to be taken seriously.

This in no way means that the album was bad. Im actually glad to hear something that broke out of the pattern of the last few albums. Im also glad to hear their solos. But of the TINY little things that they have done right in the past were left behind to prevent this from being the most perfect album they've done to date.

Now i must say these chaps have always been in the backroom of my auditory cortex since they went sonic with their "Machine" album.
I used to like nu metal, as most people who first get into the metal genre do. That like only lasted a few years until I realised that i was just noise on guitars, and true metal was with metallica, megadeth, pantera et al.

When these guys returned with this album i wasnt that interested, but that cover drew me in slightly, but only by a hair. Then i heard "cannibal"... then a solo!!! a solo! they grabbed me by the whole cranium now!
I respect any band with solos, a metal band without a solo isnt a "metal" band in my book. Its like pizza without the cheese!
The solos on "cuts you up" and "electric pulse" are friedman-esque! and very eastern sounding, which is amazing, and not just any old drab thrown together ( like King/Hanneman solos), they actually have thought and meaning and great intonation and vibrato etc!

I must say whatever guitarist these guys brought it, they must keep him! If they want to appeal to true metal fans, then the solo formula will work!

Well done guys you have gained an old school metal fan!

thats too bad. Ive always appreciated down-tuning, the basic "vibe" of metal isnt supposed to be popish and happy like almost all mainstream "rock" sounds.....i have always looked at heavier tunings as expression of more darker and agressive music.
I think those who dog downtuning are close-minded, which makes up about 75% of musicians

these solos are badass. Static-X have always intrigued me ever since I first heard Push It and Hip Hop, but this is completely amazing. This is a great example of staying true to your sound, yet not making the same album over and over again. I'm buyin it.

I'm not against it. I like Static-X and a lot of other bands that use downtuning. It's just that when you start taking a guitar, drop the tuning way down and throw on a bunch of distortion, it can turn into a muddy mess. It's hard on some of the Static-X stuff to hear the chord changes/riffs sometimes because there is so much low end mud sometimes. I'm not hearing that on these songs. It seems to me like this stuff isn't tuned as low as usual. I haven't sat down with a guitar to check any of this stuff, but instead of downtuned 7-strings, I wonder if they are just using 6 string guitars tuned down a whole step with possibly a dropping the 6th string down (C-G-C-F-A-D). I know that Nickelback uses that tuning quite a bit (as well as some others). May also be the engineer/producer being able to eliminate that muddy sound. Believe I also read somewhere that they used different amps on this album. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't they using solid state Marshall amps previously?

    mr. riff wrote on 03/30/2007 - 10:45 pm / quote |
I believe they're still using drop A# tuning on this album. Great stuff by the way!

    ready2breakdown wrote on 04/01/2007 - 03:09 pm / quote |
their using the same gear as always! MG Series Marshall's, no switches in their amps or amps behind the scenes or whatever. Trust I talk to Wayne on their forums all the time. He REALLY answers everyone who ask him somewhat relevant questions! The only difference is that he is using an ESP with EMG 81/85 in it now.(he got it from tim from soil, thank god.) But they are using the same drop A# tuning they used on the last record(and some on shadow zone). So everyone who says downtuning more makes you muddy is untrue. They have mostly ALWAYS been in DROP C not DROP A#, so I dont see why everyone insist that its the reason why. They probably just got a better idea of how to use their amps and the producer probably helped clear it up.

But can anyone tell me, was 'Start A War' any good? I have heard many different reactions about it.

I remember way back getting the Static X tape (YES the WDT TAPE, god time is flying) and just being instantly mesmerized by the songs, I mean one after another I was like wow can these guys do any wrong? That tape sat in my tapedeck in my car for probably over a year, I'd probably go so far to say 2 years, no joke. It was just perfect music for me to get pumped and get emotional to, it served its purpose perfectly so i didn't bother searching out other bands.

This album however on the first listen through didn't grab me with anything at all. The album does for the most part seem to just bleed the tracks together. There's not much seperation between them. Dare I say they all kind of sound the same.

I will say that the effort and techical things gone into making the album are fantastic, I mean the tracks are supremely well done for what they are, it's just that not much happens to be super catchy or original. I think being more metal wasn't necessarily a great idea. I think things need to be mashed up a bit, more variety.

I think the formula is there though. If only they can get back to a cross of this album with the wierdness of Wisconsin Death Trip they will have THE album.
