Guitar heroes often come in unlikely forms, but rarely as accomplished and dedicated as Imelda May’s rockabilly-inspired Darrel Higham with his very own Peavey Rockingham.
Having carved a career from his tight, Eddie Cochran-spiced rockabilly licks in his solo work, with his band The Enforcers and session work alongside Chrissie Hynde, Jeff Beck and Shakin’ Stevens, Darrel now provides the foil for Irish songstress Imelda May’s 50s-style music.
To get the best sound and build possible,
Darrel developed the Rockingham with Peavey.
Darrel explains: "
I designed what I consider to be my perfect guitar. Rockabilly is what I play and I needed a guitar that could get that sound and look the part too."
As well as the Rockingham,
Darrel also uses the Peavey Delta Blues amp, mainly for studio, but increasingly for live shows. "
No matter what environment I play in the Delta Blues is very versatile – drive channels, reverb, tremolo and it’s a snazzy looking amp."
Perfectly paired, the Rockingham and the Delta Blues gives Darrel Higham everything he needs to continue his exploration of rockabilly and perform to the best of his ability
With Love Tattoo continuing to sell and a well-received performance at this year’s Glastonbury, Imelda May shows no sign of slowing down. As well as being part of the Cambridge Folk Festival, Imelda May has now been added to the itunes Festival at London’s Roundhouse on the 26th July.
