Death Cab For Cutie Score #1 Debut

artist: death cab for cutie date: 05/22/2008 category: press releases
Death Cab For Cutie Score #1 Debut

Narrow Stairs,” the acclaimed new album from Atlantic recording group Death Cab for Cutie, has made a stunning debut atop this week’s Billboard 200 – the band’s first-ever #1 record. With sales of 143,586 this marks their greatest highest sales week in Death Cab’s 10-year history. “Narrow Stairs”, follows 2005’s Grammy-nominated, RIAA platinum-certified “Plans.”

Death Cab will celebrate the remarkable success of “Narrow Stairs” with an outdoor stage performance on tomorrow night’s installment of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! This follows last week’s appearance on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. The band was also featured in an exclusive, all-access tour documentary that aired on Current May 8th. This half-hour extended pod featured new performance and tour footage as well as a behind the scenes look at Death Cab on the road, on stage and at home in the days leading up to the release of “Narrow Stairs.” Due to popular demand it will be re-airing tomorrow, Thursday, May 22nd at 10:30pm EDT/7:30pm PDT.

I Will Possess Your Heart,” the first single from “Narrow Stairs,” is proving an across-the-board smash. The song is currently in its second consecutive week as the #1 most-played track at Triple A outlets nationwide, while also scoring consistent top 10 airplay at Modern Rock. What’s more, the compelling “I Will Possess Your Heart” companion video – co-directed by the band’s longtime friend and collaborator Aaron Stewart-Ahn, with much-admired cinematographer/videographer Shawn Kim – is now in rotation at MTV, MTV2, MTV-U, VH1, and Fuse. The video will debut this coming weekend on VH1’s Top 20 Countdown. The band recently performed a special half hour show on Fuse called “Extra Sauce” which aired directly following their appearance on “The Sauce”. Death Cab will be featured in June as one of MTV’s coveted 52/52 Artist’s of the Week.

I Will Possess Your Heart” is also blowing up online, with over 100,000 digital singles sold thus far. The single now stands as a top 5 hit on the iTunes Store’s “Alternative Singles” chart.

Produced by the band’s own Chris Walla, “Narrow Stairs” is shaping up as Death Cab’s most-praised work to date, with four-starred reviews appearing in recent issues of both Rolling Stone and Blender. The Associated Press hailed the album as “a knockout,” while USA Today raved that “the band’s confident mix of sunny instrumentation and menacing drone give these tales a haunting, vivid resonance.” “’Narrow Stairs’ will continue to propel Death Cab for Cutie into the hearts and minds of thousands,” proclaimed Alternative Press, going on to declare the band’s Ben Gibbard to be “the best in his trade.” “Unquestionably the best thing they've ever done,” summed up MTV.com, “an early contender for the best album of 2008.

Death Cab will spend its summer touring North America and beyond, with live dates currently scheduled through a pair of mid-August performances at Japan’s annual Summer Sonic Festival (see attached itinerary). In addition to headline dates around the world, the band will also appear at a variety of festivals, including such renowned gatherings as Sasquatch! Music Festival on May 25th at the Gorge in George, Washington; Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee on June 15th; the UK’s Latitude Festival at Henham Park on July 18th; Spain’s Benicassim Festival on July 20th, and British Columbia’s Pemberton Festival on July 27th.

Everyone saying that they don't want bands like Death Cab to make it big are selfish and stupid. Why don't you want others to enjoy great music? People like StratDune are big weiners, are you saying you don't like them anymore because they are getting bigger? You're lame.

Agreed. Good music is good music, be it mainstream, indie, or whatever. I don't know of anyone that ever thought, "Hey, I hope we only play small shows at clubs and have a small limited fan base for the rest of our careers." I'm not saying that's exactly where they were at but you get the idea. You make music for reason, the more people that it reaches, the better. Good for them.

That's almost like the mindset of people who let the radio feed them their music preference...it's shallow. Just because they're getting big doesn't necessarily mean they're sellouts or whatnot. So to those who are saying "sucks that they're getting big" and "the reason i like bands such as death cab is that they're low-key... but now..." get your head out of the box and realize that it's okay for other people to like and know the bands you do. But anyways, I love the new album. Good luck to them.

Why does it suck that they're getting so big? I mean, there's no need to be an indie snob here... If you like their music, then you should appreciate them reaching a larger fanbase so more people can enjoy them.

there is something that changes once a band hits it big, i cant put my finger on it, but there is usually a change. It doesnt happen with all bands, hopefully not with deathcab

That said, its great for them that they're doing so well with this one!

Being from Seattle, a Death Cab show was had enough to get into as it is. Now, they'll only play Festivals on the over side of Washington. No more clubs. And that's maybe once a year, if we're lucky.
Just like Modest Mouse won't step foot in Seattle anymore.

Why is everyone on this site still using 'gay' as an adjective for bands they think are lame? Sounds awfully junior high if you ask me. Can't these people come up with better descriptions for bands they dislike. On second thought, they're probably not smart enough to do so, which would easily explain the overuse of the 'gay' adjective.
POSTED: 05/22/2008 - 01:41 pm / quote |
Tallman1984 :
Oh, and if you stop becoming a fan of a band because of how popular they're getting, you were never truly a fan of that band to begin with. Something like that would make you a poser- most likely the type to latch onto whatever new band comes out so you can be the one hipster douche out of the bunch to say 'I HEARD OF THESE GUYS FIRST!' only to completely denounce the band once they make it big so you could be the one to say 'Yeah they were way better before they sold out,' in a weak attempt to remain cool, only to do the same exact thing over and over again (which ironically would make you even less lame than the people you denounce for 'jumping on the bandwagon').
POSTED: 05/22/2008 - 01:51 pm / quote |
The_Paranoia :
Why is everyone complaining? So they have a #1 chart as opposed to the spots they normally get. Thats a great step for them. Yeah it's kinda lame that now a lot of people know about them when maybe you were the only one. But does it really matter?

Now more people will see them and they will continue to make records. Which is great news!

Perilouspete: How is this a pile of shit? The Death Cab album was way better in my opinion. But they are two 100% different bands so you can't really compare them.

Here's something I don't get: When an "underground" band (usually a metal band) ends up way up on the billboard charts, tons of people say "this sucks, now they sold out." and then decide it's cool to dislike them. When that band is in the "underground" and other bands are charting, the same people say "this sucks, why do all these shitty bands get famous?".

You can't ****ing win, you know?

Oh and to the haters, i'm assuming your some stereotypical metal fan that has a mind so closed it's close to imploding? You do know it's possible to like OTHER music, and music that is POPULAR.

I am a huge Meshuggah fan, I think Killswitch own, TOOL are my favourite band, but you know what?

I enjoy music. That's why I enjoy Death Cab. You can't seriously say that they're crap, or "gay", because if you listened to Transatlanticism you'd realise that it's musical genius. The lyrics are incredible, some of the songs are just beautiful and the album just flows so well it's unreal.

If you can't accept that Death Cab are a good band then you're an ignorant, arrogant and intellectually challenged person who obviously can't appreciate something because it's popular, or "indie", or doesn't have thrashy guitar riffs.

FYI, this isn't the first "change" the band has seen. Has everybody forgotten Plans? That was their big change. Here they've almost gone back to their roots, and getting wonderful success because of it. If they can release an 8 minute SINGLE on ATLANTIC records, they can pretty much do whatever the fuck they want. They're becoming a rare career rock band, and hopefully will keep spitting out great records like this.

I think you misunderstand. He wasn't belittling those bands; he was belittling people who never want to hear new things, who believe that only old 'classic' stuff is worth listening to.

I like this band a lot. They're a nice change from a lot of the more abrasive things I normally listen to. I'm glad they are having this level of success, esp. considering the turbulent state of the music industry.

Seriously, a bass line played over and over again for that long makes it sound terrible. I couldn't even listen to the whole song, and if that song is a reflection on the rest of their songs, then I have no idea why people like them.

I couldn't even listen to the whole song, and if that song is a reflection on the rest of their songs, then I have no idea why people like them.

I wouldn't call Death Cab emo, but eh, call them what you must.
And if you want to hear a taste of the band, try the older albums like Plans and Transatlanticism. They're a lot better than the new one, though this new album does have its ups and downs.

Yeeeah, listen to the Transatlanticism album to see why Death Cab are so amazing. Or even just "We Looked Like Giants".....what a song.

Uh oh, now their original fanbase will hate them.

congrats to the band I guess, even though I'm not a fan of them at all...I just read the comments for some comedic moments. But I do agree with a lot of these people that say its stupid to hate a band just because they make it big. A lot of people did that with Nickelback, and if you have to base your entire musical scope to how famous or underground they are, then you shouldn't even have the right to hear...

Death Cab are amazing, I saw them live, it was mind-blowing, anyone who hates them should listen to them and learn to love them. Duh.

dude narrow stairs is cool, but its no transatlantisism. thats like my favorite album of all time. but i kind of agree that bands DO change after they hit success. look what happened to nickelback. they were a metal band, now "rockstar" is literrally a pop song. it sucks, and i hope death cab doesnt fall down that road.

American music today = shit. Indie and emo are on top and that just plain sucks. This is why metal is so near and dear to those of us who love it. It will never die because the mainstream is afraid of it and it has too strong of a following to die. And the musicians actually have mastered the art of playing guitar. Well most of them anyway. Most of the members in these indie bands and whatnot look like a bunch of nerds that think rock music will get them all the girls. I have NOTHING against this band though, just not a fan. But this band won't last another 5 years because indie and emo will fall from popularity and some other genre will replace it.

woot going to the june 23rd show in LA
and umm... ^^^
as an avid fan to both metal and indie bands, I can safely say that that is just a little narrow minded.

I'm listening to their albums right now, they're not that bad...
My friends invited me to their show in Brooklyn on the 10th of June, they've been fans of them for a long time. I guess I'll get to know the band a little better soon.

and the music bussiness dies a little more today...

You're cool.

Wow you're SOOO right! We should just listen to metallica, maiden, the ramones, megadeth and what not! And when those guy die you just replace them with new musicians so you can see live shows! Oh oh and why not go back to being monkeys again? That was the way to go! Man Darwin would be so proud of you...^-^

Now irony aside, I really like this guys and sure as hell they deserve this. I wasn't waiting for such a debut of their album but hey awsome... just don't sell out because your music rock's as it is...

haha, that was funny man. i wasnt trying to start a message board war, not my thing. but if you wanna read my full opinion on this subject go ahead. if ur just gonna get ur panties in a bunch and ignorantly call me an immature metalhead again , which im not, then please stop reading. I have nothing against death cab, congrats on having a successful album. But i do dislike the way music and pop culture are evolving due to bands of our era. I have nothing against darwin and i realize life, as well as music, has evolved/is evolving. But evolution isnt always a good thing....

I'm actually pretty surprised that this album has become so popular.
I have been a Death Cab fan for a long long time and I don't think that this new album is impressive at all.
I love Transatlantisicm more than anything, Plans is a great album as well- but this album is a bit boring. I don't feel that it has anywhere near Ben's capabilities in it. The lyrics to me are boring and lack any sort of insight about anything and I feek that there are only a few good songs on this cd. The last two albums to me just had a more magical feel, where I love every song is really good and flow nicely.
I just see myself getting sick of this album fast, unlike the rest.
I do however love the way it was produced. It is definitely their best sounding cd, but not the best material at all in my opinion.
Who knows though, perhaps it'll grow on me.
I met them a few year back in San Diego and they are really nice guys,
probably one of the most chill bands I've ever met.

I just think that a new postal service cd would have been a little bit more profitable and more widely accepted.
DCDC will continue to be one of my favorite bands, I just hope this isn't the point where they start to go downhill.

I'm sorry if this was a long post, I guess I just have a lot of opinions about this band because they are one of my favorites.

Biohazard :
the problem people have with music today is that no one wants to hear more than 30 seconds of a band that they havent listened to before. especially if it's a different style (ex: the metal/emo thing everyone here seems to keep throwing out). i have never heard any DCFC songs, but people aren't idiots. no one would waste 13-15 bucks on a cd, especially with these gas prices, if that cd was bad.

and how can selfish can you be to say that you won't like a band once they get famous? i hope everyone who says that starts a band, gets a great following, makes it big, then loses that fanbase. try putting yourself in their shoes before you spout your bull.

ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on brah

Great album, not sure if I prefer it over Transatlanticism yet... I'm glad that they are getting bigger, its refreshing to see good music in the charts Am seeing them in Birmingham in July, should be awesome.
