It isn’t easy to pull off punk in a time when the sounds and sights of the subculture have been commercialized to the farthest ends of Planet Retail, but every once in a while comes a band that can break out of the teen demographic. Toronto’s Die Mannequin - a trio of fierce musicians that have collaborated with MSTRKRFT and Junior Sanchez for their first two EPs - are exactly that kind of ragdoll rock iconoclast.
Combining these two EPs, Die Mannequin will release Unicorn Steak as a digital release in this month to coincide with their first true tour of the states after a successful SXSW and tours of Europe and Canada, handpicked to support the Deftones, Sum 41 & Finger Eleven, and Buckcherry on their full Canadian tour, as well as select dates with Guns N’ Roses. And iTunes featured “Autumn Cannibalist” from Die Mannequin’s first EP How to Kill as Single of the Week...nearly 200,000 people downloaded the song.
To understand frontwoman
Care Failure, we could look all the way back to the femme-punk height of the 70s and 80s with Blondie and Siouxsie all the way through to Courtney Love, Karen O and Brody Dalle. Times change and genres come and go, but a woman like Care - the female lead and eminent presence of Die Mannequin - is just the kind to re-energize the waxing of an ever-changing current of rock n’ roll.
