On January 29, Lost Highway Records released Just A Little Lovin’ by Grammy Award-winner Shelby Lynne. Nine of the ten tracks are newly arranged version of songs from the Dusty Springfield repertoire.
Lynne infuses a fresh approach to classics such as “Anyone Who Had A Heart”, “Breakfast In Bed” and “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”. Also included on Just A Little Lovin’ is Lynne’s original song “Pretend”, which blends in perfectly with this gorgeous set.
Aside from great songs, what makes Just A Little Lovin’ so special is the approach to recording the songs. The arrangements happened as they happened, spontaneous based solely on inspiration and vibe. The minimalist production style makes incredible use of space, and forgoes the use of Pro Tools, overdubs of lush layers of sound. This allows the songs to shine along with some of the best vocals Lynne has ever recorded. Just A Little Lovin’ was produced by multiple Grammy Award-winner Phil Ramone, who has produced icons such as Barbera Streisand and Frank Sinatra. Grammy Award-winning engineer Al Schmitt was also recruited for the project. All of the tracks were recorded live on two-inch tape at Capitol Studio A in Los Angeles.
Shelby Lynne performed the songs from Just A Little Lovin’ during five intimate shows in November 2007 in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco and Nashville. The performances were loved by audiences and very well-received by the press. Ann Powers of the Los Angeles Times said, “…for all her grace on the more familiar songs and spunk on the few rarities, one of the night's most thrilling moments came when she performed "Pretend," the only song Lynne herself wrote for her tribute album…it lived up to the Springfield legacy. Lynne may prove to be a good spiritual daughter to the great Dusty, but she still has some stories of her own.
