Metallica's two-day festival Orion Music + More kicked off Saturday night, June 23 at the popular Atlantic City, New Jersey concert venue Bader Feld, reports Blabbermouth.net.
The band headlined both nights of Orion Music + More and played "Ride The Lightning" in its entirety one night and "The Black Album" in its entirety the other. This is the only time the band performed their classic sophomore album, "Ride The Lightning," in its entirety in North America.
In an interview with CBS Local, Metallica lead guitarist Kirk Hammett said, "I know 'Ride The Lightning' forwards and backwards. It's not like 'The Black Album,' where there are three or four songs that we rarely play. Over the course of the years, we've played most of 'Ride The Lightning', except for one song we've never done, 'Escape'. It was pretty easy [to re-learn those songs]. We put way more time into learning 'The Black Album' than 'Ride The Lightning'."
Watch the full performance below ("Ride The Lightning" starts around the 38:00-mark).
The setlist is as follows:
01. Hit the Lights 02. Master of Puppets 03. The Four Horsemen 04. Sad But True 05. Hell and Back 06. The Call of Ktulu 07. Creeping Death 08. Escape 09. Trapped Under Ice 10. Fade to Black 11. For Whom the Bell Tolls 12. Ride the Lightning 13. Fight Fire with Fire 14. Nothing Else Matters 15. Enter Sandman
Holy ****ing hell, that was brilliant as always! Say what you will about Metallica , but you've got to agree that they're one of the best live bands ever!
honestly am I the only one who thinks that was a really short setlist. I saw collective soul the other week and they played the entire dosage album and then like another solid 15 songs. Metallica could have done better

Let me explain. If Metallica chose to play 30 songs a night, especially at this age...they would be dead. Or certainly staring retirement in the face. They play 2 hours a night.. That's a rarity for a band nearing their 50's.
Anywho.. I saw the Black Album being streamed on youtube. Just awesome

This is like comparing apples to oranges in a musical sense, but I just got to see the Dave Matthews Band perform two nights back to back, and they start at 8 and play til 11:30.. if Dave can do it, then I want Metallica to do it. lolol
cuz spelling Cthulhu brings you one step closer to him, thats why they called it ktulu instead. in fear of the beast. offcourse they just did it for fun.
I have to say watching some of the YouTube footage, this is the best I think I've seen Lars play (surprising) and apart from Hetfield struggling a little doing a set of mostly stuff from when his voice was very different it all sounds really promising - I wish I'd been there to see Escape live, and Ride The Lightning is my favourite 'tallica album so it would have been great to see those tracks all played together just for the novelty. Really hope this is a sign they'll put out something more classic-sounding than Death Magnetic (and nothing like the one that shall not be named). Something like RTL-meets-Black album would be ideal for me, with the production of Black album.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band are in their 60's... and they do 3 hour gigs, everytime, and let me tell you, it's one of the most energy-filled concerts anyone who has watched them has experienced.

The time for the first night's set was 2 hours and 10 minutes. The time for the second night's set was 2 hours and 10 minutes. They just played more longer songs the first night.

Can Hammett still pull off "Trapped Under Ice"?
I know speed should not be a measure of quality for a musician still I'm impressed with that song.
It's interesting that they played Ride the Lightning in the opposite order that the tracks are listed. So instead of starting the album with Fight Fire with Fire, they ended the album with it. Either way, that's really awesome they played it. I would've killed to go if I knew they were going to do that.
I'd rather have seen this set than the one they played at Download.
(Black album + Hit The Lights, Master of Puppets, Hell and Back, For Whom The Bell Tolls, One, Seek and Destroy)
Not that it was a bad set... I just love Ride The Lightning, it's my favourite Metallica album. =)

Oh I know, Bruce and the band was my first concert back in 2009. But the major difference is most of Bruce's stuff isn't played at 100 miles an hour. That's something I remember James saying about being compared to the Stones.
the reason they did that is because in the h.p lovecraft book, it says that mentioning the name "cthulu" will only bring him closer. i thought it was pretty cool actually that they did that.

Obviously, we're talking about diferent boundaries here. What James spoke about Bruce was this:

Well, Metallica usually plays about 20 songs or so... This album just has a little bit of songs. I'm pretty sure its just you who forgot to think of how many songs the album had
Loved this! I need to see Kill Em All and Justice... That would be the shit.. Put those two albums live in their entirety and sprinkle in some other shit and that would be Badass.
They got inspiration from playing the old.. Lets hope they go back for next album.
Okay, I'm incredibly confused. Maybe someone can explain this to me:
If they played the album in its entirety, then how come it isn't in full, or in order, on the setlist?
There is this unwirtten law in making concert set lists where you start with something that would draw the attention of the audience and end it with something that will be the nail in the coffin or something to blow the viewer away. They think that it's better to put Call Of Ktulu first since it's a good starter to warm them up the crowd as well, then suddenly surprise them with Creeping Death. Fight Fire With Fire is a great ending song. When they did Black Album, it was also last to first which actually worked out. But note that in 2006, they played Master Of Puppets in sequence (first to last). At the end of the day, it really boils down to what they feel on how the set list should be done. What matters is they finally did the song Escape. After all, it is still in sequence, just backwards. I hope I helped you out in your confusion.

they always play 18 songs. they played 20 the second night. they have long songs so in return they have to play less of them.
Even though I've drifted away from Metallica's studio albums recently, I've got to say that this is awesome, and I hope they do it or something similar again in the future.

No I get you. But what I said was when James was talking about being compared to the Rolling Stones and how they have been playing for 50 years, he said the difference between Metallica and the Stones is Tallica plays much faster and harder, so it would be difficult to have longevity like the Stones or E Street Band.

i was on the front rail for both nights and both shows were both completely awesome..they still rock better then anyone on the planet

rush are all nearly/over 60 and they still do 3 hour setlists. Rush's music is also more complex
jus sayin :p

God bless Rush. Best band on Earth? Possibly. But my original point was that because Metallica's music is so fast and aggressive, they won't be able to play 30 song sets.

Im a fan of both guns and metallica, and I will tell you...
RIGHT NOW, the 2 hours of metallica beats the f***** s*** out of "GUNS N ROSES".
Hate to say it, I love GNR...
