Monday Fresh: New Metallica Could Take Until 2014

Metallica are exciting to be starting on their next record - but it could take until 2014 before fans get to hear it.

Speaking at a press conference at the weekend, James Hetfield said he can't wait to get stuck in to the project:

"I've been itching to write for a long time - all of us have - so there's lots of ideas," he said (via Blabbermouth). "There's been lots of little things that have kind of jumped up and gotten in the way of writing. So we're pretty excited to get writing again. It could go very quick, it could take a long time; we have no idea. That's the beauty of the artform."

Lars Ulrich is more wary of saying the writing could wrap up soon when they have projects like their Orion Music Festival and 3D concert film to work on.

"I wouldn’t use the word 'close'. I mean, obviously, in the context of, say, the age of planet Earth, we're pretty close. But in the context of, say, other things, there may be one or two football seasons, or one or two baseball seasons, or one or two hockey seasons," he told Vancover radio station The Fox (via Ultimate Classic Rock).

Can Ulrich put a date on the album release? "I would say late 2013 or early 2014... I think even late 2013 may be a bit optimistic. I would say hopefully we can realistically get a record out probably about a year and a half from now, so maybe early 2014."

Remember when Iron Maiden would release an album every year? That was when they were in their early days. Now Metalica, as mentioned above, have thousands of riffs and still want to take that long for an album? It's much easier nowadays to produce and record an album.

Pretty much all bands who have been around for a long time take longer in between albums as time progresses...Metallica managed to get from KEA to Justice pretty rapidly. Life and other shit takes over.

It is disappointing that this will only be their 10th studio album after 30+ years, but whatever...i love 'em and i'll be seeing them whenever they tour near me. It'll be here when it's done...life's too short to be worrying about how slow they are at recording and releasing albums.

1.) Lars is sucking at drumming so he'll take forever. (Fyi to people who don't know about studio recording, drum tracks are recorded first, and no one can record until drums are recorded).
2.) They'll take forever to get some better production. God, I've really been disappointed in Rubin lately.
3.) James will be recovering in a rehabilitation asylum under his beliefs that he is a table.

Sometimes it's good to take your time, look at Worship Music, Anthrax was working on that for almost 8 years, although they sort of had a good reason to. I would have gladly given Death Magnetic back and waited an additional until now.

Just another example of why a great band like Dream Theater is so under appreciated. Just 5 guys pounding out album after album of the most complex musical stuff out there. The there's bands like Metallica who take 6 years to put out an album 1/2 as involved as their old stuff. Ugh.

Death Magnetic was a turn in the right direction, and it was post production that screwed that album up, that and they could have had a couple songs in the 3-5 minute range to break up all those 8-10 minute songs other that that I really liked that Metallica album, which is something I couldn't say since about 1989. Personally I think they should ditch the 3D movie idea and just work on there damn album!

bunch of tired old men trying to be angry after 30 years of fame and fortune. sounds pretty forced to me. frankly, they should quit while they're ahead (or at this point, not too far behind) count their blessings and go down as one of the few good bands that actually called it quits before their name became a joke. look at journey for instance. GREAT band in their heyday, but now, sans steve perry and 20-30 years later, they still tour and coming from someone who has seen the new lineup personally, its a bit ridiculous. i don't hate metallica. they helped change the scene and have defined several generations of musicians and music appreciators. only they can spoil all they've accomplished, and i would hate to see another lulu or st anger taking them further in the wrong direction. if you can't produce an album to the caliber of your older stuff or even death magnetic, don't. you guys are gods. you definitely don't need anymore money, and you have plenty of good material to tour and such with until you can't tour anymore. i would love to see another good metallica album, but i am rightfully skeptical. prove me wrong and i'll admit it, but until then....noooot really paying much more attention than reading articles.

To paraphrase James Hetfield; you can't stop and start a waterfall
Some times they'll get this big burst of creativity and they'll just start workin song after song, sometimes they won't. You can't force it. Plus all the other things they have on their plates get in the way of that also (family, touring, ...Lars' acting career....)

And besides, I'd much rather them take their time and make this album as perfect as possible. Remember Lulu? That was written in 1-2 months, let's let this one have a little more time to stew.

Although on the other side of that, too much time can make it seem a little too over-produced , which could take a lot of the emotion out of it and make it feel mechanical in a way. Which can be seen in the demo to The Day That Never Comes (Casper) as compared to it's album counterpart.

I'd say 10 albums in 30 years is pretty solid. Doesn't mean all 10 are good, but writing and recording one album isn't the easiest thing in the world, much less 5 great albums in a row like they did in a matter of 10 years.
Yeah Metallica isn't Rush and can't just make great songs and albums come out their butts like Geddy, Alex, and Neal seem to be able to, but Metallica is getting old (Age wise) and when you get old you dont want to move or do anything as fast. Hopefully this album will be better sound quality wise than DM and more like Black Album and AJFA musically.

I´m looking forward to it, but i find it quite amuzing that if megadeth decides to release an album next year, they will have made 3 good albums since Death Magnetic.

I don´t really get why they take so long, especially when they say that they are so creative and so full of ideas. Other bands (even old bands) seems to be perfectly capable of releasing good material every 2-3 years.

Dude even if they had 100000 riffs. They have to pick the 12 or 13 best out of them or more and put them together to another masterpiece. You can produce much faster that's right but good music/art takes it's time. I'm looking forward to it

In Metallica's case, the riffs are recorded first and then the tracks.. and Lars isnt even that bad of a drummer to come up with a good track. Sure he is slow, but he is still ****ing creative when it comes to drumming. More creative than other drummers in their genre.

I can agree that most early Metallica fans can't really appreciate music as art, but some of them, me included, just say that we didn't like their newer material and leave it at that. Its not a bad thing for a band to evolve, every band must evolve at some point, but that doesn't mean that everyone is going to like the direction that the band is heading in. I personally didn't care for Load, Re-Load, or St. Anger, but I did enjoy Death Magnetic.

Eh, really as long as it doesn't feel rushed I'll be fine with the wait. Death Magnetic was all right and they seem to have some great ideas ready so if they want some extra time to polish them and make a good follow up that's fine/
I just hope they don't take too long though because if you're writing or in the studio for too long you can begin to forget your initial direction and the album will start falling apart from there.

Agreed. Lars may not be as skilled as the likes of Lombardo, Barker, etc... but considering that he is the only person(in my opinion) who has that level of synergy with James skills, both in songwriting and execution of songs. Lars also has the unique presence in the music industry that stirs a lot of emotions from people... You either extremely like him or extremely hate him. No middle ground there.

You need to remember, 30 years ago, they never had families to take care of. You may not understand how much time and effort it would go to juggle a career as big as Metallica with family as well. Hence why it takes longer, for all older bands nowadays, to bring out new records.

Agreed. Lars may not be as skilled as the likes of Lombardo, Barker, etc... but considering that he is the only person(in my opinion) who has that level of synergy with James skills, both in songwriting and execution of songs. Lars also has the unique presence in the music industry that stirs a lot of emotions from people... You either extremely like him or extremely hate him. No middle ground there.

I'm on the middle ground here.

It'd take anyone 5 years between albums if the songs are all 20 minutes long. But I'd have to think if three out of four band members have been with each other for close to 30 years they'd have to scratch their heads and be like "Now what the hell are we suppose to do?"

To all those who constantly bash Metallica. You ppl are disrespectful *******s that dont realize what this band has been through and how hard they have worked. It is okay not to like something, but don't go on the internet and start picking at ppl u dont even know. They could retire anytime they want and spend their time with their families, but they dont. They keep going to bring music to fans and the ppl. They make the records tehy want to make, but they always put themselves on tour for the ppl. It isnt going to be perfect becuz they are human. There are always going to b mistakes at every concert of every band on the planet. If u want perfection, make a bunch of robots and program them to play the songs perfectly.

Sorry, but no sale. Thought his drumming was annoying as shit in that concert. The Four Horsemen especially. Just aggravating to hear. Horrible tempo-keeping, just ANNOYING drum fills (mostly snare) and that china he keeps spamming...I can't take anymore.

This is from a guy who genuinely loves Metallica. But I am a drummer first, so maybe I focus on it too much compared to others? Not to sound patronising or anything of course.

^ Furthermore, surely there's a reason that Lars' drumming is consistently brought up. It surely isn't a conspiracy; where we have all decided to hate on Lars' drumming even though it's perfect. That's very unlikely. There are crazy amounts of people that find that it ruins the songs. The GREAT songs, I will add - before I may be called a troll.
